From the makers of Sharon Signs To Cherry Red , further inspired by its own Junkshop Glam series and genre defining box set “All The Young Droogs”, RPM follows up with Super Sonics. A celebration of the multi-faceted British alt. rock/pop scene which flourished 1992-1998, midway through attracting the term Brit Pop.
In the world of independent pop, The Monochrome Set are an institution. Formed in the white heat of the late 70s post-punk scene, they issued a string of memorable albums awash with cute hooks, jangly guitars and singer Bid’s inimitable vocal style, inspiring the likes of The Smiths and the whole C86 generation.
Taking inspiration from Aerosmith and Van Halen, Ratt originally formed in Hollywood in the mid-1970s, eventually releasing the independent ‘Dr. Rock’ single in 1980, before contributing a track to the highly influential “Metal Massacre” compilation in1981, and their independently released, self-titled mini-album in 1983. But Ratt finally made their mark when Stephen Pearcy (vocals), Robbin Crosby (guitar), Warren DeMartini (guitar), Juan Croucier (bass) and Bobby Blotzer (drums) signed to Atlantic Records in 1984 for the “Out Of The Cellar” LP. Their tuneful hard rock found favour with both radio and on MTV, where clips for singles ‘Round And Round’ and ‘Back For More’ received heavy rotation. A big influence on the growing glam and hair metal scene based around LA’s Sunset Strip, “Out of The Cellar” would soon reach triple platinum status. The radio edit of 'Round And Round' is included as a bonus track.
Glenn Hughes, “The Voice Of Rock”, first came to prominence in Trapeze, a band featuring future Whitesnake guitarist Mel Galley, and future Judas Priest drummer, Dave Holland. Following their third album, “You Are The Music, We’re Just The Band”, Glenn joined Deep Purple in 1973 for their “Burn”, “Stormbringer” and “Come Taste The Band” albums. Deep Purple split in 1976, with its members following various solo and side-projects. The first fruits of Glenn’s post Purple career appeared with “Play Me Out” (also available on Purple Records), issued in July 1977. Glenn would go on to collaborate with Pat Thrall in Hughes-Thrall, Joe Lynn Turner in the Hughes-Turner Project, with Tony Iommi in Black Sabbath, plus pursue a prolific solo career through the 1990s and beyond.
