Originally released by Trojan Records in 1970, the two various-artist long players, ‘Loch Ness Monster’ and ‘Funky Chicken’ were instant best sellers for the company, selling particularly strongly among the country’s reggae-loving ‘skinheads’.
Sporting what was undoubtedly the most garishly designed sleeve from the golden age of reggae, ‘Loch Ness Monster’ focused on the most weird, sexual and peculiar recordings from the period, resulting in an unsettling yet extremely compelling 30+ minutes of music.
As its name suggests, ‘Funky Chicken’ brought together a dozen of the funkiest reggae tracks to have seen issue over the preceding months, with the selection featuring tracks performed by some of the most accomplished acts on the Jamaican and UK scene.
Both albums, currently unavailable on any format, are now represented here, with the original track-listings boosted by a further 16 bonus tracks, all of which echo their respective themes.

By the early ‘70s, Duke Reid’s Treasure Isle Records had long since been firmly established as one of Jamaica’s music industry leaders, having previously released some of the biggest selling ska, rock steady and reggae 45s in the island’s history.
The trend continued as the decade progressed, with the Duke’s famed studio in Bond Street continuing to produce numerous best-sellers between 1971 and 1973.
And yet, despite the consistently high quality of his output throughout this time, many of the producer’s recordings have continued to remain criminally overlooked over the past half century. Now, at long last, they receive the long overdue attention they unquestionably merit.
Alongside hits by such established artists as The Melodians, The Tennors, Justin Hinds & The Dominoes, Errol Dunkley and Pat Kelly , are numerous long-lost gems by the likes of The Willows, The Saints, Eddie Ford and veteran performer Lascelles Perkins.
Showcasing romantic reggae, early roots and proto dub, this collection aptly demonstrates why Treasure Isle continued to be held in such high regard during this fascinating transitional period in the history of reggae music.
