He was a vital performer in the outlaw country music movement, rejecting all pop conventions. Jennings career really took off in the 70's and he was known as a superstar to the mainstream pop audiences as well as the country audiences. He recorded a number of successful hits, such as "This time" and "I'm A Rambling Man" (1974) both reaching number one. He also released a number of popular duets, with Willie Nelson, including the multi-platinum "Waylon and Willie" (1978).
Over the course of the late 70's and early 80's Jennings achieved ten number one hits. In the mid-80's Jennings formed a successful group called the Highwaymen.
The group consisted of himself, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson. In 1998, Jennings formed the "Old Dogs", and with him was Jerry Reed and Mel Tillis.
