Description
When it comes to raw, uncompromising punk music, U.K. Subs are the genuine article. Totally immersed in the punk culture, the band performed a barrage of no less than 20 ''in your face'' tracks live at the Camden Palace, specially recorded for the ''Live From London'' series. The group’s founder and lead vocalist Charlie Harper, James Moncur on guitar, John Armitage on bass and drummer Rab Fae Beith combine for a truly memorable performance that defines an era of British punk, including the hits Warhead, Stranglehold and Tomorrow’s Girl.
In 1976, the British music scene was alive with the sound of punk as a new wave of bands expressed their political and anti-establishment views through hard-edged lyrics and music. At the forefront of the movement was the U.K. Subs, formed in the same year by lead singer and prolific songwriter Charlie Harper. Originally called the Subversives, and then briefly the U.K. Subversives, the band’s first line-up consisted of Harper, Nicky Garratt on guitar, bassist Paul Slackand a carousel of drummers before Pete Davis settled into the job.
Thanks to the exposure from playing several sessions on John Peel’s Radio 1 show in 1977-78, the U.K. Subs recorded their first album with Gem Records in 1979 called ''Another Kind Of Blues'', reaching number 21 in the UK chart. The album heralded the beginning of a hugely successful part of the band’s career, scoring 7 consecutive Top 30 hits in the UK single chart and opening for The Police at several of their concerts.
''Crash Course'', released in 1980 was the band’s most successful album peaking at number 8 in the UK album chart and cemented their reputation as one of the world’s leading punk acts. Despite numerous line-up changes in the following years, the U.K. Subs are still on course to fulfill their ambition of releasing successive albums starting with consecutive letters of the alphabet. As of 2011 and the release of ''w''- ''Work In Progress'', the U.K. Subs are just three releases away from that goal, and with a packed touring schedule and no sign of their popularity waning, ''z'' will only be a matter of time.
