Rose Royce originally formed in 1973 under the name Total Concept Unlimited and following tours of England and Japan with Edwin Starr fell under the influence of Norman Whitfield, Motown’s ‘psychedelic shaman’ who took them under his wing when he parted company with Motown.Their first commercial success under the Rose Royce moniker was on the soundtrack to the highly successful motion picture Car Wash. Throughout their career which produced evergreen hits such as Car Wash, I Wanna Get Next To You, Love Don’t Live Here Anymore and Is It Love You’re After, Rose Royce have maintained a well established fanbase throughout their career.Stronger Than Ever proves that Rose Royce were certainly plenty strong at this point in their career, working with a tight modern soul groove on Epic Records, away from their previous placement on the Whitfield label, even though Norman Whitfield’s still very actively handling production here.As well as being a hit in the R&B charts the single Best Love made the top 20 in the Netherlands with the album making the top 30.
“It’s a fine mix of ballads
(Sometimesy Lady) and dancefloor cuts, namely Best Love and Still In Love, the
latter redolent of Rod Temperton’s work with Michael Jackson.”
