β’ SoulMusic Records is very proud to present βStir It Up – The Anthology, 1965-1979β a musically scintillating 2-CD set by soul/pop and reggae icon, Johnny Nash. Covering close to fifteen years of recordings, this first-of-its-kind collection includes all of Johnnyβs US and UK Epic singles, prime album cuts, recordings from the mid-to-late β60s and several tracks from two albums (1977βs β(What A Wonderful Worldβ and 1979βs βLetβs Go Dancingβ) which have never been reissued on CD.
β’ As renowned US writer Justin Kantor documents in his stellar notes, the Houston-born singer/songwriter, musician, arranger and producer began his career as a teenage recording artist with a Top 30 pop hit in 1957 and signing with major labels before forming his own labels JoDA and later JAD Records with then-manager Danny Sims, Johnny became a chart fixture starting with βLetβs Move And Groove (Together)β in 1965, enjoying success in the US and UK after a promotional visit to Jamaica resulted in his first recordings there (notably βHold Me Tightβ and βCupidβ).
β’ Justifiably considered a pioneer by fusing soul and reggae and bringing the much-loved Jamaican art form to mainstream US audiences, Johnnyβs association with Epic Records started with his version of βStir It Up,β written by a then-fledgling Bob Marley (who Johnny introduced to manager Sims and with whom he worked in London in the early β70s), also represented here with four further compositions including βReggae On Broadwayβ and βGuava Jellyβ; the bulk of the original material contained on this highly satisfying 2-CD set was produced and written by (R&B Foundation Pioneer Awardee) Nash himself.
β’ This anthology, with quality remastering by Nick Robbins, includes the classic βI Can See Clearly Now,β the UK No. 1 single βTears On My Pillowβ (1975) and the final 1979 productions by the late Van McCoy with a rare dancefloor mix of βCloser.β In addition, we have Johnnyβs reggae-flavoured covers of timeless tunes such as β(What A) Wonderful World,β Bobby Darinβs βDream Loverβ and The Everly Brothersβ βAll I Have To Do Is Dreamβ and soul-
