Indie Hits is the first and only complete guide to the first decade of Britain’s Independent records chart, and to the acts, the music and the labels which made up the Indie scene of the 1980’s. The book is set out in a similar format to the Guinness Hit Singles and Albums books, with every artist, single and album to have shown in the indie charts over the 10 year period being detailed.
The first Independent charts were published by the trade paper Record Business in January 1980, by which time they were well overdue. By that time, Mute Graduate, Factory, Crass, Safari and Rough Trade were just a few of the new breed of rapidly expanding labels already scoring hit records. They were producing acts like Depeche Mode, UB40, Toyah, The Cult, Joy Division and Stiff Little Fingers, all to become major international sellers. Later years brought the likes of the Smiths, New Order, Erasure, The Stone Roses, James, The Fall and Happy Mondays (not to mention Kylie and Jason!) – all successful and influential independently -distributed hitmakers.
The A-Z section details every chartmaking 1980s indie act and all hit records in a detailed but easy to reference format. Also included are complete indexes of single and album titles, an authoritative history of the origin and development of the Indie charts during the 1980’s, listings of all No 1 singles and albums with illustrations of rare original sleeves, print ads and other memorabilia of the period plus a fax ‘n’ trivia section including the artists and labels with the most chart records, the most No 1’s and the longest chart stays. If it was in the indie charts of the 1980’s – It’s in here!
