Cherry Red Chairman rescues a Dodo skeleton…..
It was New Years’ Eve and as it approached midnight Cherry Red’s Iain McNay was standing in front of a log fire with his friend Errol Fuller while Errol, who is an author of several books on extinct species and also a collector of such, revealed that he knew of a Dodo skeleton which had been hidden away for some time in a dingy basement in Surrey. Errol also explained that there are just thirteen specimens of this exotic and much-misunderstood flightless bird which became extinct around the mid-17th century still in existence.
The more Errol talked the more something lit up inside Iain’s head and he made it a New Year’s resolution to rescue the Dodo and put it on display somewhere so the world could see it.
Said Iain, ‘Over the years Cherry Red has on so many occasions reissued music that is long lost and forgotten and in some cases never saw the light of day in the first place. Even in our early days we put out releases by obscure and almost forgotten bands and this has greatly accelerated over the past 3 decades when we have found more and more hidden gems to bring back to life. Many of our box sets contain unreleased material by bands hardy anyone remembers. We love to feature the obscure and forgotten so when I heard about this lost Dodo skeleton I went on a bit of a mission to rescue him. Cherry Red has always defied trends and supported the innovative and interesting.
As far as I was concerned, rescuing the Dodo was a classic Cherry Red project. As a species, the dodo is visually and historically iconic. It’s also legendary in the true sense of the word, because so much we think we know about the dodo is probably incorrect. With all that in mind, it would have been indefensible to allow such a rare specimen to be lost.’
