Homo Iratus: Human Consumes Human, CD

A self-described deathcore band, Greece's Homo Iratus traveled to sunny Florida to record their far-from-sunny debut, Human Consumes Human in the spring of 2000. Featuring an interesting recipe of groove-intensive death metal laced with hardcore elements, tracks like "Life-Like Violence" and "Project: New World" offer gargantuan riffs and surprisingly intelligent lyrics (though these are usually rendered all but incoherent by vocalist Mitch's guttural roar). And although they occasionally descend into straight-ahead death metal on blast beat-led stomps like "Crawling Principles" and "Human Parts Inc.," the group also incorporates various types of exotic tribal percussion (a Sepultura influence, no doubt) into more compelling tracks like "Hideousness Show" and "Sonus in Terrorem." A promising start nonetheless, with plenty of room for growth.
