FOREWORD
Sometimes I wonder what happened to the spirit of Rock N Roll, which for so many years was the bedrock of our industry. When I was a kid there was a huge change in popular music. It was the late 50s and American artists such as Bill Haley, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, Bo Diddley, Gene Vincent and of course Elvis came bursting through and popular music started to change radically. None of these artists obeyed the rules and the teenagers of the world loved them for it. A few years later it was the UK's turn and the ‘British Invasion’ of America started. The Beatles, The Stones and hundreds of others. The next big change was the era of ‘flower power,’ with drugs, and free love which produced great music made by people who didn’t care about rules or indeed the law in many cases. And then in the late '70s it was punk, which broke through with a total disregard for everything. Over the next years, we had post-punk, glam, soul, hip hop and its successors, reggae, new romantic, progressive rock, heavy metal and so many other unique genres which all helped change the rules and music in their own ways.
But in the last few years, it feels like new music has been increasingly dominated by producer-driven tracks constructed on an algorithmic and formulaic basis. Individuality and true artist expression has sadly decreased and popular music with some exceptions has just become plain boring. This has been accompanied by wokeism and cancel culture where all of us have to be more careful what we say and do. The creative world and indeed our personal worlds have become more restricted. We now have the emergence of AI which could be another nail in the coffin of great innovative music. No artists, just computer generated ‘music.’
That spirit I talked about at the beginning is disappearing rather fast. I hope something will happen to bring it back, music needs it. Being essentially an optimist, I am sure it will.
Iain McNay, June 2024
LATEST ACQUISITIONS
TJM Records, operated from Manchester by Tony Davidson, was known for its distinctive contributions to the punk and post-punk scenes. TJM was instrumental in launching and promoting various influential acts, including Slaughter and the Dogs, The Teardrops and Private Sector. Tony’s commitment to nurturing raw talent help established the label as a vibrant player in the late ‘70s independent music scene and we’re proud to represent the TJM catalogue at Cherry Red.

TOP SOUNDS
For a few years now, Top Sounds has been unearthing hitherto unheard archive finds from cult UK bands of the mid-to-late 1960s. We’re now the proud custodians of the Top Sounds catalogue, in terms of licensing tracks for compilations and for synchronisation purposes.
