Hear To Tempt You / Bare Back - Temptations (The)

Hear To Tempt You / Bare Back
•    At Motown almost from its inception, the legendary group The Temptations made their first-ever move to a new recording home in 1977, signing with Atlantic Records and cutting two albums for the label.  At the time, the line-up consisted of original members Melvin Franklin and Otis Williams along with Richard Street (who joined the group in 1972) and newcomers Glenn Leonard and Louis Price (respectively replacing Damon Harris and Dennis Edwards).

•    Released towards the end of 1977, HEAR TO TEMPT YOU saw the quintet record for the first time in Philadelphia where the team of Norman Harris, Ron Baker and Earl Young masterminded the sessions, working with some of the top arrangers, songwriters and musicians (including future Temptation Ron Tyson) responsible for the then-ever-popular ‘Philly’ sound. A US Top 40 R&B album, the LP spawned two charted singles, ‘Think For Yourself’ and ‘In A Lifetime.’

•    For their second and final album for Atlantic, The Temptations turned to two brothers who had also been part of the original Motown hit factory, Brian and Eddie Holland.  A US Top 50 R&B album, BARE BACK (with its revealing back cover art) contained eight tunes co-penned by the Hollands with members of the group contributing the song, ‘I See My Child’ (co-written with Benjamin Wright, their musical director); Atlantic released three singles from the album, two of which – the title track and ‘Ever Ready Love’ reached the US Top 50 R&B charts.

•    Both HEAR TO TEMPT YOU and BARE BACK are being reissued for the first time outside Japan; notes by renowned US writer Kevin Goins include quotes from both Glenn Leonard and Louis Price.

Night Time Is Lonely Time

Released on 27/09/10. Van McCoy originated an awful lot of music in his brief 39 years as a writer, producer, arranger and occasional singer. He signed on as a recording artist after several years as a writer for Columbia’s wholly owned music publishing company April-Blackwood. It is quite likely that he was signed as a performer in an attempt to fill the gap left by one of the Columbia labels biggest artists, Johnny Mathis, who had recently departed to join the Mercury label. Van performs such Mathis styled interpretations of standards such as How High The Moon , Every Time We Say Goodbye , I Can Dream Can t I and I Get Along Without You Very Well as well as a few of his own compositions. The album was produced by Columbia’s long time executive Mitch Miller. Here is the first opportunity in many years to enjoy his one solo vocal album.

Northern Soul Legend
This CD features Herbert's recordings for Spar, Poncello and Ref-O- Ree records, as well as a handful of previously unreleased recordings produced by Fred James in the 1990s. Northern Soul fans truly covet and laud Herbert Hunter recordings and several of his 45s go for hundreds of dollars on the collectors market. Many of these were recorded with a group that would come to be known as the AREA CODE 615 band. These are the guys that played on Bob Dylan, Linda Ronstadt, Neil Young and Barefoot Jerry records, as well as many of Nashville's R&B hits at the time.Herbert even performed with AREA CODE 615 when they appeared at the Fillmore Ballroom in the late 1960s. Several sides also feature the legendary Johnny Jones and the Imperial Seven, Nashville's premier R&B band during the 1960s. The unreleased 1990s recordings feature members of The Roadrunners, The Amazing Rhythm Aces and Freddie & The Screamers.Herbert Hunter made his recording debut in 1961 on the Spar label with a cover of "Dr. Feelgood" that outsold the original. It was the Spar label's very first release and it put Herbert in good stead with the company and with Ted Jarrett, who would go on to produce every record that Herbert released for the next four decades. Herbert recorded prolifically for Spar and its subsidiaries Giant, Kenilworth, Caravelle and Hit. He recorded under his own name and as Leroy Jones, Marty & The Merits, Johnny Keaton and several other pseudonyms so as not to flood the market with Herbert Hunter records. In 1962 Ted Jarrett started his own label, Poncello Records, and recorded H erbert for that imprint as well. Poncello was short lived though and Herbert continued to record for the Spar group. In 1968 Ted started the Ref-O-Ree label and recorded two sides by Herbert that were never released at the time. He then recorded for Ted's T- Jaye label in the 1980s and 1990s. Our Price: £5.00

The Rockin’ Spar Masters
These records were recorded with the Nashville "A Team" of the 1960s and many of the ballads feature lush orchestral arrangements. These musicians played on the recordings of Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, The Everly Brothers and nearly every Pop hit that came out of Nashville in the early to mid 1960s. Several of these tracks are seeing their first digital release. All were produced by Ted Jarrett between 1961 and 1965.Herbert Hunter's name will forever be linked to legendary song-writer and record producer Ted Jarrett. Ted discovered Herbert in the late 1950s and soon learned that the young singer was a gifted mimic. Ted's greatest discovery, Gene Allison had had several big hits ( You can Make It If You Try, Have Faith, etc.) but was becoming increasingly more erratic and had a serious drinking problem that caused him to miss shows. Ted sent Herbert out as valet and driver for Gene, but it was understood that Herbert was to stand in for Gene if the star was unable to perform. No one was ever the wiser. Herbert made his recording debut in 1961 on the Spar label with a cover of Dr.Feelgood that outsold the original. It was the Spar label's very first release and it put Herbert in good stead with the company and with Ted, who would go on to produce every record that Herbert released for the next four decades. Herbert recorded prolifically for Spar and its subsidiaries Giant, Kenilworth, Caravelle and Hit.Herbert's gift for mimicry was put to good use and he recorded under a host of pseudonyms like Leroy Jones, Marty & the Merits, Johnny Keaton, Bob Johnson, The Belles and many others. Sheffield Steel
Sheffield Steel is Joe Cocker smost consistently pleasing program of tunes in many years. Island Records label boss Chris Blackwell took Joe Cocker to Compass Point studios in the Bahamas. With legendary session musicians Sly and Robbie and Wally Badarou, Cocker crafted this smooth, sun-kissed album of reggaefied covers, including Bob Dylan’s Seven Days, Jimmy Webb’s Just Like Always and Stevie Winwood’s Talking Back To The Night a full year before Winwood’s own version was released.Sheffield Steel has plenty of fine moments and in Cocker's hands, the reggae classic "Many Rivers to Cross" becomes movingly autobiographical and Randy Newman’s Marie and Jimmy Webb’s Just like Always are two of the kind of romantic big ballads that Cocker does so well.
