From A Whisper To A Scream: Expanded Edition - Esther Phillips

From A Whisper To A Scream: Expanded Edition
•    Justifiably hailed as her ‘career’ album, FROM A WHISPER TO A SCREAM re-established the late Esther Phillips as a prominent soul and jazz artist in 1972, starting her most fruitful period as an international chartmaker through her five-year association with jazz industry veteran Creed Taylor’s Kudu Records.

•    Originally a chart-topping child star with the Johnny Otis band in the early ‘50s, Little Esther battled drug addiction off and on throughout the ‘60s during which she achieved some success with ‘Release Me’ (1963) and ‘And I Love Him’ (1965). Esther recorded some critically acclaimed albums for Atlantic before entering rehab in 1969.

•    The sessions for FROM A WHISPER TO A SCREAM in December 1971 found her surrounded by stellar players such as Gordon Edwards (bass), Bernard Purdie (drums), Airto Moreira (percussion), Cornell Dupree and Eric Gale (guitar), Richard Tee (keyboards) and labelmate Hank Crawford (on sax on selected tracks).

•    Handpicking the material herself, Esther included some R&B hits of the time – The Originals’ ‘Baby I’m For Real,’ Eddie Floyd’s ‘’Til My Back Ain’t Got No Bone’ – alongside two songs penned by Allen Toussaint, including the stirring title track.  The album’s most notable cut was her true-to-life version of Gil Scott-Heron’s ‘Home Is Where The Hatred Is,’  which she was initially reluctant to record  given its direct references to heroin addiction.

•    Originally reissued in 1988 with (four) bonus tracks, this expanded edition has been out of print for several years. Notes by SoulMusic.com founder David Nathan include quotes from a 1973 interview with Esther.

•    This CD is released 21st April and will not be shipped prior to this date.

Gettin' Dirty

BMX Bandits are a Scottish 1960s-influenced guitar pop band who have been making music from 1986 to the present day. They have shared members with other Bellshill bands Teenage Fanclub and The Soup Dragons.

True heroes of the underground certainly the Scottish music underground defiantly of the Bellshill scene. Duglas T. Stewart has been the mainstay of this band that has featured members of The Teenage Fanclub and The Vasalines. Their sound is as much west coast Americana as it is west Scotland

Their songs are full of heartbreak and humour mixed with a laid back guitar sound that amongst many others attracted the attention of Kurt Cobain who was famously photographed wearing their T-shirts and claiming that they were the only other band he would like to be in.

Gettin' Dirty includes the single of the same and the Love Come To Me single. This edition includes all the b-sides and the fantastic cover of the Jonathan Richman song Summer Feeling perfect for the great summer we are all about to enjoy. It also includes sleeve notes by Duglas and images dug out from his loft.

Between The Sea And The Sky
Imagine coming off the back of a defunct group, with no hits, but who have admittedly just released one of the best pop psych singles in the UK ever, and being thrown into George Martins Air Studios on a publishing/production deal and told there you are boys "make an album".

A slight license with the factual there but essentially this is what happened to Martin Briley and Brian Engel .In 1969, late of Mandrake Paddle Steamer and their classic 'Strange Walking Man', these late teens art students were given access to Air Studios and budgets for orchestras plus musicians to come up with hit singles. What they actually came up with was an almost concept album that exhibited all that had influenced them to that point, and let loose their humour and imagination. Sadly with the exception of one single ('Pale Green Vauxhall Driving Man') released under the name Prowler, a couple of years after the event, the recordings lay on the shelf, and are released for the first time now.

Briley played with GreAenslade and then as session guitarist with the Hunter Ronson band, Meatloaf and Ellen Foley. Three solo albums and a US top 40 hit 'Salt In My Tears' followed. He continues as a songwriter for international artists and backing vocalist.

Cab Driver - The Dot & Paramount Years 1958-1972
After a long and illustrious recording career that had spawned over 60 major US Pop hits for Brunswick and Decca Records, respectively, the Mills Brothers took a new direction and signed to Paramount’s recently acquired subsidiary, Dot.

Commencing in 1958, their spell with the label and its parent company lasted some twelve years, and produced some of the group’s finest works, including seven chart hits, four of which make their CD debut on this set.

This long overdue collection, comprising the best of their Dot and Paramount singles, highlights an almost forgotten chapter in the career of what were arguably the most successful and influential vocal group in the history of recorded music. · From Doo Wop to Country, Jazz, to mainstream Pop, the quality of the music and group’s inimitable, laid back delivery both remain consistent throughout, and with most of the material officially unavailable since its original release, music fans can finally discover the Mills Brothers could still swing even after the Beatles had broken up!

Hello Everyone - Popsike Sparks From Denmark Street 1968-70
•    Between 1968 and 1970, some of the finest, most obscure British psychedelic pop singles of the era escaped on the Spark label, the newly-inaugurated recording arm of long-established publishers Southern Music.

•    Recorded in the basement studio of the company’s Denmark Street premises, these tracks often featured the same cabal of musicians and songwriters, leading to a homogenous in-house style that perfectly encapsulates the late 1960s British pop-psych studio sound.

•    The best of Spark’s impressive roster is now collected on CD for the first time on Hello Everyone: Popsike Sparks from Denmark Street 1968-70, which assembles highly-prized, highly-priced 45s from pre-Rare Bird band Fruit Machine, Gene Latter, post-Sorrows outfit the Eggy, the New Generation (subsequently to become the Sutherland Brothers), the Dennis Wheatley-inspired Icarus and both sides of the magnificent and astonishingly rare single by Sir Ching I (only one stock copy known to exist).  Also included are exquisite Brit popsike singles from Timothy Blue, Just William, both sides of the superb John Carter/Russ Alquist collaboration ‘The Laughing Man’/‘Midsummer Dreaming’ and two sensational offerings from Eartha Kitt during her brief and unlikely immersion in late Sixties hippy chick chic.

•    Crammed with vintage three-minute pop tunes, and with a lavish 16-page booklet that features rare photos, quotes and the full story behind the label, Hello Everyone is simply an essential purchase for admirers of the British psychedelic pop genre.

Spark Of Love (Expanded Edition)
Following the success of CHOOSING YOU (reissue on SoulMusic Records in 2014, SMCR-5116), his debut album for ABC Records, Lenny Williams really hit his stride as one of the premier black male vocalists of the ‘70s with the 1978 release of SPARK OF LOVE which became his best-selling and a gold album for the Arkansas-born, California-raised singer/songwriter.

Lenny first came to the attention of the U.S. record-buying public as the lead singer for funk/soul band Tower Of Power from 1972-1975 on now-classic hits such as ‘What Is Hip?’ and ‘So Very Hard To Go.’ Prior to that, he recorded singles for Fantasy Records and Atlantic. Other solo projects included a one-off solo LP with Warner and one album for Motown ("Rise Sleeping Beauty”).

As he recounted in liner notes for this reissue of SPARK OF LOVE (an expanded edition with three single edits) by renowned US writer, Rashod Ollison, one of the songs on the Motown LP was ‘’Cause I Love You’ which Lenny had been performing live to great audience response.  When it came to recording his sophomore ABC project, Lenny and producer Frank Wilson (known for his work with  Eddie Kendricks, The Four Tops and others) decided to re-record the song as a ballad. Subsequently, the song has become Lenny’s timeless signature tune, featured in numerous soundtracks and sampled by major rap and hip-hop artists, although never issued as a single.

This 2014 SoulMusic Records reissue also includes US R&B hit singles, ‘You Got Me Running’ and ‘Midnight Girl.’
