Spark Of Love (Expanded Edition) - Lenny Williams

Spark Of Love (Expanded Edition)
Following the success of CHOOSING YOU (reissue on SoulMusic Records in 2014, SMCR-5116), his debut album for ABC Records, Lenny Williams really hit his stride as one of the premier black male vocalists of the ‘70s with the 1978 release of SPARK OF LOVE which became his best-selling and a gold album for the Arkansas-born, California-raised singer/songwriter.

Lenny first came to the attention of the U.S. record-buying public as the lead singer for funk/soul band Tower Of Power from 1972-1975 on now-classic hits such as ‘What Is Hip?’ and ‘So Very Hard To Go.’ Prior to that, he recorded singles for Fantasy Records and Atlantic. Other solo projects included a one-off solo LP with Warner and one album for Motown ("Rise Sleeping Beauty”).

As he recounted in liner notes for this reissue of SPARK OF LOVE (an expanded edition with three single edits) by renowned US writer, Rashod Ollison, one of the songs on the Motown LP was ‘’Cause I Love You’ which Lenny had been performing live to great audience response.  When it came to recording his sophomore ABC project, Lenny and producer Frank Wilson (known for his work with  Eddie Kendricks, The Four Tops and others) decided to re-record the song as a ballad. Subsequently, the song has become Lenny’s timeless signature tune, featured in numerous soundtracks and sampled by major rap and hip-hop artists, although never issued as a single.

This 2014 SoulMusic Records reissue also includes US R&B hit singles, ‘You Got Me Running’ and ‘Midnight Girl.’

Crawler / Snake Rattle and Roll
Field a not in Database

20 mouth-watering servings of classic British [with a fair helping of American] rock from the mid/late-seventies. The band was formed by the remaining members of Back Street Crawler after the demise of their ex-Free, legendary main man and all-round guitar hero, Paul Kossoff. Our Broadside release brings together their two fantastic Epic/CBS albums from 1977 and 1978 – in their entirety. This is the UK/European debut of these albums on CD, and the first time that they have appeared anywhere together as a complete – and specially priced – package. Also includes a bonus track: the single version of ‘Stone Cold Sober'.

Megaton
A thrilling, no-holds-barred, heavy rock treatment
of a clutch of riff-based but fairly commercial pop tunes,
Megaton'ssole album has plenty of admirers these days. Perhaps
this should be a rock label staple, but the LPs origins are more pop
than that with more akin to those ranks of over looked production
library classics recorded for one purpose and taking on a different
guise and importance to collectors years later. For Megaton is
the creative inspiration of vocal harmony leader Les Humphries (as in
The Les Humphries Singers, big hit makers in early 70'sGermany) and his
writing partner/right hand LHS man, Jimmy Bilsbury. Perhaps
having the likes of future Uriah Heep vocalist John Lawton in the midst
of the LHS was an inspiration, but whatever, Humphries nose for a
commercial opportunity sniffed out the Free, Led Zep hard rock/ blues
rock market and he duly delivered. A 1971 Deram release, first in
Germany, other territories later inc. South America, and the UK -where
today such a pressing can set you back over £700 ! RPM presents
it'sfirst legitimate reissue on CD.

Sweat Band
Sweat Band, the self-titled, 1980 debut album by the P-Funk spin off act was the first official release on the Uncle Jam Record label, formed by Funkateer in Chief George Clinton (visionary behind the many headed R&B, Funk, Rock and Psychedelic musical juggernauts that were Parliament and Funkadelic, or "That Parliafunkadelicment Thang” if you like) and his business manager Archie Ivy.   The band itself was formed by P-Funk bassist Bootsy Collins (one of very few to hold a candle to Funk bass pioneer Larry Graham) and had previously released records under the name Bootsy’s Rubber Band but after losing the rights to the name Rubber Band to a folk music group of the same name Bootsy had to make a change and Sweat Band was born. Bootsy, having served his time initially in a group called the Houseguests with brother Phelps "Catfish” Collins (the group backed up James Brown for a time in the early seventies cutting such gems as "Talkin’ Loud, Saying Nothing”) he was invited to join the P-Funk revolution by Clinton and became an integral part of the movement and it’s most famous face after Clinton due to his exuberant and infectious persona which backed up his incredible bass riffs.  The group also boasts arguably three of the greatest Funk musicians to have graced fans with their talent with Bernie Worrell on keyboards (Funkadelic) and horn players Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker who were integral to the James Brown and P-Funk sounds.   As a result every track on SWEAT BAND delivers the solid Space Funk grooves you would expect from a P-Funk record including "Freak To Freak”, a #25 US R&B hit and #44 Dance hit, "Body Shop”  (the second single), "Love Munch” and "Jamaica”, the latter two tracks having been co-written by Maceo Parker.   With Bootsy himself in the producer’s chair, ably assisted by Clinton as executive producer SWEAT BAND has all the hallmarks of the P-Funk sound and doesn’t miss a trick.   BBR is very proud to add another heavyweight R&B artist to our catalogue in the form of Bootsy Collins and his SWEAT BAND.  Newly re-mastered and repackaged with extensive liner notes and bonus content.   SWEAT BAND is a must have for all P-Funk, R&B and Soul fans out there!

Friends 2CD
Shalamar’s Friends was one of the biggest and most celebrated classic soul albums of the 1980s. BBR is proud to present the first ever deluxe edition of the album.
Shalamar was formed in 1977 by Dick Griffey, the booking agent for the legendary R&B TV show Soul Train, and British music producer, Simon Soussan. Initially they used faceless session musicians but when their first single, ‘Uptown Medley’ (R&B #10 / Pop #25) found chart success Griffey created a permanent group. After ‘Take That To The Bank’ (US R&B #11 / Pop #79) Shalamar’s classic line-up of Jody Watley, Jeffrey Daniel and Howard Hewitt continued to have chart success on both sides of the Atlantic with infectious pop-soul cuts like ‘The Second Time Around’ (US R&B #1 / Pop #8) and ‘Make That Move’ (US R&B #6 / Pop #60) all released on Griffey’s Solar imprint.
In 1982 the group released their seventh studio album FRIENDS, which enhanced on the soul groove sound that had brought the group previous success. The opening track and lead US single from the album ‘A Night To Remember’ (US R&B #8 / Pop #44) became an instant R&B classic. The second single in the US was the album closer ‘I Can Make You Feel Good’ (US R&B #33 / Pop #102), another classic mid-tempo R&B dancer that does exactly as it suggests.
FRIENDS enjoyed massive popularity and unprecedented chart success in the UK, becoming one of the biggest selling alums of the year. FRIENDS peaked at #6 on the UK album chart during an incredible 72-week run. The four singles for the UK market, ‘I Can Make You Feel Good’, ‘A Night To Remember’, ‘There It Is’ and ‘Friends’ reached #7, #5, #5 and #12 respectively on the UK singles chart helping Shalamar retain huge popularity to this day. Jeffrey Daniel introduced body popping and the back slide (later renamed the moon walk by Daniel’s student, Michael Jackson) to UK TV audiences on Top Of The Pops in July of 1982 when promoting ‘A Night to Remember’.
BBR is very proud to bring you FRIENDS, completely re-mastered and repackaged complete with extensive liner notes and extended bonus content including a new interview with Jody Watley and a second disc of alternative versions from the US and UK single releases. FRIENDS is a must have for all R&B, SOUL, 80s POP and DISCO fans out there!

Choosing You: Expanded Edition
•    Considered one of the premier black male vocalists of the ‘70s, Arkansas-born, California-raised Lenny Williams first came to the attention of the U.S. record-buying public as the lead singer for funk/soul band Tower Of Power from 1972-1975 on now-classic hits such as ‘What Is Hip?’ and ‘So Very Hard To Go.’

•    The soulful singer’s early attempts at launching a solo career (first with Fantasy Records, then briefly at Atlantic in 1971) had been challenging; a one-off solo LP with Warner Brothers ("Pray For The Lion”) in 1974 (while still a member of ToP), while critically-acclaimed, didn’t register sales-wise and nor did the 1975 release of the Motown album "Rise Sleeping Beauty.”

•    Renowned black music executive Otis Smith signed Lenny to ABC Records in 1977, teaming him with former Motown producer Frank Wilson (known for his work with Eddie Kendricks, The Four Tops and others).

•    Thanks to strong club airplay for the upbeat title track and the single ‘Shoo Doo Fu Fu Ooh!’ (US Top R&B Singles #31), the CHOOSING YOU LP proved to be the turning point in Lenny’s solo career, reaching No. 25 on the US Top R&B Albums chart.  Other outstanding cuts included the ballad ‘I’ve Been Away For Too Long,’  the inspirational ‘Problem Solver’ and the dance-flavoured ‘Look Up With Your Mind.’

•    This 2014 SoulMusic Records reissue includes four bonus tracks and notes by renowned US writer Rashod Ollison with extensive quotes from Lenny.
