Benét (Expanded Edition) - Benét

Benét (Expanded Edition)
Before Milwaukee-born singer/songwriter Eric Benét began his solo career and began his ascent to international recognition as a best-selling contemporary recording artist and performer, he was a member of a short-lived duo with his sister Lisa that was known simply as Benét. The duo released a CD on EMI Records in 1992 that has become a curio collectible for fans of quality music and all curious about Eric’s formative roots as a recording artist.

The primary creative forces behind the project were Eric and his cousin George Nash Jr. (who has continued to work with him through his solo projects) who co-wrote five of the tracks together.  Nash also co-produced seven cuts, working on five with renowned smooth jazz/R&B keyboardist and producer Jeff Lorber and with the late Robert Brookins and with Bryan Loren on one track each.  Songwriter Sami McKinney (known for songs recorded by Anita Baker, Nancy Wilson and Patti LaBelle among others) produced three cuts with Lorber as co-producer. The CD’s only single, "Only Want To Be With You” reached No. 75 on the US Top 100 R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart.

The CD included a soulful version of The Carpenters’ classic hit, "Rainy Days And Mondays.”  As Eric explained in an interview for the notes by A. Scott Galloway for this 2013 reissue, "We grew up loving harmony… The Carpenters always did innovative vocal things that we loved so "Rainy Days and Mondays” was a natural choice…” Notes include quotes from Eric, Lisa, George Nash Jr. Jeff Lorber and executive Alison Ball Kilmer.

This expanded edition includes an instrumental version of "Only Want To Be Witih You”.

Totally Tata Expanded Edition (Original Recordings Remastered, Bonus Tracks)
Side by side with the reissue of TATA VEGA’s 1976 Full Speed Ahead Motown debut, Soul Records is very proud to be releasing the multi-talented artist's sophomore album for the label TOTALLY TATA .Released in 1977, TOTALLY TATA once again provided a great musical setting for the native New Yorker. Musicians for the sessions included Andre Lewis (of the Motown group Mandre), Paulinho Da Costa and John Barneswith arrangements by Al Johnson (of Back For More fame) who also worked on Full Speed Ahead and was featured on the key cut track You’ll Never Rock Alone (co-written by Brenda Russell)Totally Tata includes a wonderful version of Stevie Wonder’s Blame It On The Sun, the standout Love Comes From The Most Unexpected Places and the spectacular Come In Heaven (Earth Is Calling), co-written by Marvin Gaye's ex-wife Anna Gordy and Gaye collaborator Elgie Stover with Tata and a staple in Tata’s recording and performance repertoire.

Like its predecessor, TOTALLY TATA was embraced by Motown music lovers worldwide who are elated that the album previously only available on a now out-of-print limited edition Japanese CD is making its return with three bonus tracks: the A and B sides of the planned-but-never-released single version of Come In Heaven and Tata s second version of You’ll Never Rock Alone a duet with Jermaine Jackson, issued on the Motown album Pops, We Love You

"It’s hard to imagine a talent like Tata Vega establishing a foothold in the music industry at any other time than the 1970’s. A 5ft nothing, curvy Puerto Rican vocal powerhouse possessed of a startling unique delivery, she certainly would have had a hard time blending into the background of ‘60s girl groups like The Vandellas and Supremes, and would later struggle in the shoulder-padded MTV dominated ‘80s.”

Born To Love
When Peabo Bryson and Roberta Flack teamed up in 1983 to record the Capitol album BORN TO LOVE, the pair had already experienced success as a duo thanks to the 1980 LP, Live & More (a Top 10 R&B best-selling album). By the time they headed into the studio to cut BORN TO LOVE, Bryson was six years into his recording career and had established himself as one of the premier black male vocalists of the day; Flack was already considered an internationally-renowned artist thanks to classic recordings such as ‘The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’ and ‘Killing Me Softly With His Song.’
With tracks produced by songwriters Michael Masser, Bob Crewe and Bryson himself, BORN TO LOVE achieved gold status in the US as well as becoming both artists’ highest-charting international success. The impact of the now-classic single, ‘Tonight, I Celebrate My Love’ (co-written by Masser, then known for songs such as Diana Ross’ ‘Touch Me In The Morning’ and Natalie Cole’s ‘Someone That I Used To Love’ and Gerry Goffin) was global, reaching No. 2 on the UK charts, No. 10 in Australia, No. 4 in Canada and No. 16 in the US).
The album also included two other charted singles, ‘Maybe’ and ‘You’re Looking Like Love To Me’ while ‘Heaven Above Me’ got radio and club play in the UK.
This 2013 expanded edition of BORN TO LOVE includes three bonus tracks along with liner notes by Billboard Senior Editor, Gail Mitchell with new quotes from Roberta Flack.

Just For You/All Night Music
· Originally from Youngstown, Ohio, the brother-and-sister group The McCrarys began their career in the gospel field recording their first LP in 1972. However, it was a move into secular music in 1978 that brought the team national prominence in the US when their debut album for Portrait Records, "Loving Is Living” achieved success, in part due to the Top 10 R&B hit, ‘You’ which featured one of their champions, Stevie Wonder. After their label follow-up LP, "On The Other Side,” the group signed a new deal with Capitol Records in 1980.
· Consisting of sisters Charity and Linda and brothers Alfred, Howard and Sam, The McCrarys worked with producer/musician Patrick Henderson (whose roots were also in the gospel field). With seven tracks credited to various members of the group as songwriters, JUST FOR YOU included the key cut, ‘Any Ol’ Sunday’ which was recorded by Chaka Khan in 1981.
· Teamed with former member of The Crusaders, Wayne Henderson (producer of Ronnie Laws, Esther Phillips, Side Effect and Pleasure among others), the group’s second Capitol LP, ALL NIGHT MUSIC fared better. The track, ‘Love On A Summer Night’ became a Top 100 US R&B hit single and a constant favourite – and now classic - in the UK with ‘smooth groove’fans.
· Apart from a limited Japanese pressing of "All Night Music”, both albums are making their worldwide CD debut with this SoulMusic Records reissue, which includes notes by renowned UK writer Charles Waring with 2013 quotes from members of the group.

Billy Preston & Syreeta
  • Continuing to reissue classic original albums from the Motown catalogue, SoulMusic Records is very proud to present the worldwide CD debut of the self-titled 1981 album by BILLY PRESTON and SYREETA, an expanded edition with seven bonus tracks.
  • Billy Preston (through mid’-70s hits such as ‘Will It Go Round In Circles’ and ‘Nothing From Nothing’) and Syreeta (former wife of Stevie Wonder with four critically-acclaimed albums to her credit) were established as recording artists in their own right when, as Motown label-mates, they worked together on the 1979 soundtrack for the film, "Fast Break.” While the film itself made no impact, one track from the album, the beautiful ballad ‘With You I’m Born Again’ (included as a bonus track on this reissue along with an instrumental version of the song) became a Top 5 UK hit prompting Motown to release the single in the US where it reached No. 4 on Billboard’s Top 100 chart.
  • Encouraged by the single’s success, Syreeta’s 1980 self-titled LP (reissued by SoulMusic Records in 2013, SMCR-5094) featured two more duets with Billy, ‘One More Time For Love’ and ‘Please Stay,’ both included as bonus tracks on this release along with a non-album ‘B’ side ‘It Will Come In Time.’ The pair recorded BILLY PRESTON & SYREETA in 1981 working with producers including David Shire & Carol Connors, Ollie E. Brown and Michael Masser.
  • Bonus tracks include two versions of ‘Go For It’ (from "Fast Break”) and the reissue includes notes by UK Motown expert Sharon Davis with 2013 quotes from producer/songwriter Carol Connors.
