Born To Love - Peabo Bryson & Roberta Flack

Born To Love
When Peabo Bryson and Roberta Flack teamed up in 1983 to record the Capitol album BORN TO LOVE, the pair had already experienced success as a duo thanks to the 1980 LP, Live & More (a Top 10 R&B best-selling album). By the time they headed into the studio to cut BORN TO LOVE, Bryson was six years into his recording career and had established himself as one of the premier black male vocalists of the day; Flack was already considered an internationally-renowned artist thanks to classic recordings such as ‘The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’ and ‘Killing Me Softly With His Song.’
With tracks produced by songwriters Michael Masser, Bob Crewe and Bryson himself, BORN TO LOVE achieved gold status in the US as well as becoming both artists’ highest-charting international success. The impact of the now-classic single, ‘Tonight, I Celebrate My Love’ (co-written by Masser, then known for songs such as Diana Ross’ ‘Touch Me In The Morning’ and Natalie Cole’s ‘Someone That I Used To Love’ and Gerry Goffin) was global, reaching No. 2 on the UK charts, No. 10 in Australia, No. 4 in Canada and No. 16 in the US).
The album also included two other charted singles, ‘Maybe’ and ‘You’re Looking Like Love To Me’ while ‘Heaven Above Me’ got radio and club play in the UK.
This 2013 expanded edition of BORN TO LOVE includes three bonus tracks along with liner notes by Billboard Senior Editor, Gail Mitchell with new quotes from Roberta Flack.

Thelma & Jerry/Two To One: Expanded Edition
·       Continuing to reissue classic original albums from the Motown catalogue, SoulMusic Records is very proud to present the worldwide reissue debut* of two albums by THELMA HOUSTON and JERRY BUTLER on one CD, an expanded edition with one bonus track. (* "Thelma & Jerry” was issued on CD on US Motown in 1992).
·        By 1977 when they began recording together, Thelma Houston was enjoying her first wave of across-the-board international success with her now-classic cover of Harold Melvin & the Bluenotes’ ‘Don’t Leave Me This Way’; a year earlier, established hitmaker Jerry Butler had signed with Motown and released his label debut "Love’s On The Menu” (reissued by SoulMusic Records in 2013 along with his second Motown LP, "Suite For A Single Girl,” SMCR-25086).  ·       With production by Butler himself and Homer Talbert and Motown hitmaker Hal Davis and Michael B. Sutton, THELMA & JERRY (a US Top 20 R&B album) included covers of Stevie Wonder’s ‘Joy Inside My Tears’;  a medley of Chicago’s ‘If You Leave Me Now’ with The Bee Gees’ ‘Love So Right’; and a Top 100 R&B charted single, ‘It’s A Lifetime Thing’ (the flipside of which "Kiss Me Now” is included on this CD reissue as a bonus track).
·       The follow-up 1978 LP TWO TO ONE consisted of just two Houston-Butler duets (left over from sessions for the previous album) and three solo tracks from each performer.
·       Notes by renowned UK writer Charles Waring include 2013 quotes from Thelma Houston.

Joy Ride: Expanded Edition
·       The follow up to the best-selling album "Drama V” (reissued by SoulMusic Records in 2013, SMCR-5104), the 1976 LP JOY RIDE proved to be even more successful for the Detroit-based Dramatics (originally formed in 1962), spawning a US Top 20 chart hit with ‘Finger Fever’ and two US Top 10 R&B hit singles (‘Be My Girl,’ #3 and ‘I Can’t Get Over You,’ #9) both of which became staple tunes in the group’s live performances.
·       The quintet (by 1976, consisting of L.J. Reynolds, Willie Ford, Ron Banks, Larry "Squirrell” Demps and Lenny Mayes) had established themselves as hitmakers with  classics such as ‘Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get’ and ‘In The Rain’ for Volt Records.
·       The three primary producers on JOY RIDE had been key players in the group’s previous success - Don Davis, songwriter Tony Hester and key musician/artist in his own right Michael Henderson.  In addition, two members of the group – Ron Banks and L.J. Reynolds - stepped up with each producing one track while longtime arranger Jimmy Roach wrote and produced another standout cut, ‘I Get Carried Away.’  Henderson’s ‘Be My Girl’ quickly became one of the album’s highlights (with his own version competing with the group’s for US airplay) propelling JOY RIDE into the US Top 20 R&B Albums chart.
·       This SoulMusic Records’ reissue includes two bonus tracks, single versions of ‘Be My Girl’ and ‘Sundown Is Coming’ along with liner notes by renowned US writer Janine Coveney with 2013 quotes from Michael Henderson.

Love Brought Me Back: Expanded Edition
·       Los Angeles-born D.J. Rogers began his musical journey like  so many of his contemporaries – in the world of gospel:  as a teenaged member of the Los Angeles Community Choir, he was featured on five albums for Savoy Records before recording with the ‘godfather of contemporary gospel,’ the Reverend James Cleveland.
·       In 1969, D.J. (Dwayne Julius) moved into secular music, recording a now-rare self-titled LP for singer/songwriter Leon Russell’s Shelter label. Signed to RCA Records in 1975, the powerhouse vocalist, songwriter, musician and producer made three critically-acclaimed albums for the label, establishing himself as a US soul music favourite with the now-classic ‘Say You Love Me’ (later recorded by Jennifer Holliday and Natalie Cole) and ‘Bula Jean.’
·        When Maurice White (founder of Earth, Wind & Fire) saw D.J. perform at an L.A. event, he signed him to his CBS-distributed Kalimba Productions.  The result was an association that spanned three released albums, the first of which was 1978’s LOVE BROUGHT ME BACK. The uplifting title track became D.J.’s biggest US hit (Top 20 R&B Singles) and the subsequent LP, his best-selling set.
·       This SoulMusic Records’ expanded edition reissue features five bonus tracks, including the 12” single mix of ‘Love Brought Me Back’ and single edits of ‘All My Love’ (a US Top 100 R&B hit) along with extensive liner notes by renowned US writer A. Scott Galloway with 2013 quotes from D.J. himself, Jerry Peters, James Gadson and Maxayn Lewis.
