Love's On The Menu/Suite For The Single Girl - Jerry Butler

Love's On The Menu/Suite For The Single Girl
The legendary Jerry Butler (nicknamed ‘The Ice Man’ for both his ‘cool’ vocal style and his personal demeanour) was already well established as a successful recording artist in 1975 when he was approached by then-Motown president Ewart Abner, with whom he’d worked at the start of his recording career at Vee-Jay Records, to sign with the globally-renowned record company.
Chicago-based Jerry began immediately working on LOVE’S ON THE MENU with some of Motown’s in-house producers (including Hal Davis, Michael Sutton and Michael Smith), the team of Clayton Ivey & Terry Woodford; and hometown producers Michael Davis and Sam Brown. The album featured mostly original compositions (a number co-written by Butler) alongside covers of the Syreeta/Stevie Wonder song, ‘I’m Goin’ Left,’ Olivia Newton-John’s ‘I Honestly Love You,’ the Lionel Richie-penned, Commodores-recorded standout ‘This Is Your Life’ and the single, ‘The Devil In Mrs. Jones’ (a reference to the famous ‘70s adult movie of the same name.
Released in 1977, Jerry’s second Motown set SUITE FOR A SINGLE GIRL (which he co-produced with Homer Talbert and Paul Wilson) and was, as its’ title implied, a concept-driven album. Recorded in Chicago, the nine tracks were written by members of Jerry’s famed Music Workshop; standouts included the US R&B charted single ‘I Wanna Do It To You,’ ‘Only Pretty Girls’ and the almost-eight minute long opus, ‘Music In Her Dreams/Dream Music.’ Out of print on CD for decades, this SoulMusic Records’ reissue of two classic ‘70s Motown albums includes notes by renowned US writer Kevin ("Soul Ninja”) Goins.

The third release from Soul Music.com Records new association with Cherry Red features a coupling of two Motown albums by 70s soul group The Dynamic SuperiorsThis release marks the first time complete Motown albums are beingreleased on a Cherry Red-associated label Based in Washington DC, The Dynamic Superiors(Tony Washington, Maurice Washington, George Spann, George Peterbark and Michael Maccalphin) spent several years performing before being signed to Motown in 1974 by then-label president Ewart Abner "The group s first two albums, The Dynamic Superiors and Pure Pleasure, both released in 1975 were produced by the hitmaking husband-and-wife team of Nick Ashford & Valerie Simpson (artists in their own right, best known for Motown work with Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell among others)." The Dynamic Superiors were no strangers to controversy: lead singer Tony Washington was openly gay and seemingly, the first openly gay black recording artist, predating Sylvester and Carl Bean by a number of years.Washington sometimes performed in drag onstage, drawing a positive response from audiences when the group toured with the likes of Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5 in the U.S. The group s self-titled Motown debut included the now-classic Shoe Shoe Shine, a Top 20 US R&B hit and the follow-up, Leave It Alone which reached No. 13 on the US R&B charts as well as the Ashford & Simpson chestnut, Don t Send Nobody Else (also recorded by Millie Jackson and Ace Spectrum). On A New Street / Hold On 2CD
SoulMusic Records is extremely proud to reissue two much-sought after albums by the legendary group Little Anthony & The Imperials, the 1973 LP ON A NEW STREET and the ultra-rare HOLD ON, which was withdrawn after just a few weeks after its initial release in 1975.
Anthony and The Imperials were already established as hitmakers (thanks to classic recordings such as ‘Goin’ Out Of My Head,’ ‘Hurt So Bad,’ and ‘Tears On My Pillow’) by the time they signed with Avco Records. For their debut album for the label, the quartet chose to work with two producers, Teddy Randazzo (with whom they’d enjoyed their mid-60’s hits and Thom Bell (enjoying success with The Delfonics and just beginning his hit-filled association with The Stylistics). With its soulful sophistication, ON A NEW STREET benefited from the superb arrangements and production of both Randazzo and Bell and included the Top 30 R&B hit, ‘I’m Falling In Love With You.’
For HOLD ON, their second Avco album, the team worked with two of Thom Bell’s then-proteges, his brother (the late) Tony Bell and future hitmaker in his own right, Phil Hurtt, both of whom co-wrote all nine tracks for the project. The single, ‘Hold On (Just A Little Bit Longer)’ achieved some chart success and has since become a much-sought after Philly ‘70s classic particularly among UK soul music buyers.
Extensive notes for this 2-CD set by renowned US writer Kevin Goins include a new 2013 interview with Anthony Gourdine along with quotes from producer Phil Hurtt and lyricist Victoria Pike among others.
