Kathy - Sledge Heart
18 February 2011
Released on 18/04/11. One of the most celebrated and distinctive singers of the past century or so, Kathy Sledge has now been a star for almost four decades, ever since she and her older sisters Kim, Debbie and Joni - formed Sister Sledge in 1972.In 1979, Sister Sledge released possibly their most famous song, We Are Family, which was written for them by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards. This was to become their signature tune.A Number One hit on the US r&b charts, it also got to Number Two on the main American pop chart, and also got to Number Eight in the UK. Oddly, it was another single the same year, He s The Greatest Dancer (from the album titled We Are Family ) which was to be their biggest British success, getting to Number Six. In 1992, Kathy left the group, to go solo. At the time they d amassed four Top 100 albums in America, eight Top 100 singles over there and a further nine Top 40 UK singles.Easily one of the most successful girl groups of the era. In 1992, she released her solo album Heart. It showcased her versatility and gave her the opportunity to prove that, now away from the comfort zone provided for so long by being in a group with her sisters, she had the power and drive to firmly establish herself as a great talent in her own right. She worked on the album with an array of producers, in the process allowing each song to have the maximum impact. It also proved that, while she still retained a lot of the values and intrinsic style which had made Sister Sledge so popular, Kathy was also capable of updating her approach, to appeal to a new, younger audience in the 1990s.The most successful tracks here were to be the title song and Take Me Back To Love Again. Both were to prove huge hits in the clubs, with the latter making it to the top of the US dance chart.
