CHERRY RED FEBRUARY 2013 RELEASES

MOBILES - DROWNING IN BERLIN (THE BEST OF...)

A welcome repress for new wave/new romantic band the Mobiles, who enjoyed a run of chart success in the early 80s, notably with their hugely popular and atmospheric single ‘Drowning In Berlin’. The latter reached number nine in early 1982 and the video is still a fixture on MTV to this day.
This comprehensive reissue features their best-known hit plus further singles ‘Amour, Amour’ and ‘Partners In Fiction’, their debut album in its entirety, and a wide selection of rare bonus material including remixes and b-sides.
"Drowning In Berlin" also encompasses comprehensive packaging, with track by track liner notes from bass player David Blundell, a history, interviews with the band’s one-time record label manager, numerous photographs and a complete discography.

CLASSIX NOUVEAUX - SECRET

Classix Nouveaux was one of the first new romantic acts in England. Cherry Red Records revisit their third and final studio album here with the release of 1983's Secret. Although Classix Nouveaux's more guitar-heavy sound separated them from the mostly synthetic rhythms of Japan and Ultravox, the group's appetite for stylish fashion and danceable keyboards had them quickly associated with the new romantic movement. Formed in 1979 with Sal Solo (vocals), Mik Sweeney (bass), BP Hurding (drums), and Jak Airport (guitar), Classix Nouveaux originated in the punk underground, namely from the ashes of the controversial X-Ray Spex. After banshee wailer Poly Styrene departed from X-Ray Spex, the remaining members held auditions for a replacement singer. The charismatic Solo won the approval of Styrene's former bandmates and they went on to record the album NIGHT PEOPLE (1981), followed by LA VERITE (1982). SECRET (1983) turned out to be a very appropriate title for most of the world, as this final album was Classix Nouveaux's best kept secret. With top American producer, Alex Sadkin, at the helm Classix veered between the artistic experimental of Peter Gabriel and the synthy pop of the Thompson Twins. However if you are Polish, then this is THE Classix Nouveaux album as far as you are concerned, since it yielded massive hits with NEVER NEVER COMES and HEART FROM THE START. The release coincided with Classix's first tour of Communist Poland. Few Western bands had been there, but the band arrived at Warsaw airport to hordes of screaming fans. Something akin to Beatlemania followed them there over the next three years. SECRET did not produce major hits, but probably does represent the best studio artistry ever achieved by Classix Nouveaux.

CLIFFORD T WARD - SINGER SONGWRITER

The seventh in our series of Clifford T. Ward releases, Cherry Red Records is now set to reissue the classic 'Singer Songwriter' album. Originally issued on John Peel and Clive Selwood's Dandelion Records in the early 1970's, this fantastic album contains Clifford's first two singles, 'Carrie' and 'Coathanger.' This heart-warming album also includes the original artwork and brand new in-depth sleevenotes from regular Record Collector and Mojo contributor Michael Heatley. As a testament to his timeless genius, in June 2002, Clifford finished above The Beatles in a BBC Radio 2 poll on the best music released during the Queen's reign. Unfortunately Clifford wasn't around to witness this as he sadly died in December 2001 at the age of 57. Released with the full co-operation of Clifford's widow Pat Ward and the Clifford T. Ward estate with assistance from The Friends Of Clifford T. Ward organization, "Singer/Songwriter" is the latest addition to our Clifford T. Ward series since reintroducing the world to Clifford with "Anthology" (CDMRED210) in June 2002. Fans should also seek out David Cartwright's fascinating biography, 'Bittersweet: The Clifford T. Ward Story', available now on paperback through Cherry Red.

THE BRILLIANT CORNERS - HEART ON YOUR SLEEVE (A DECADE IN POP 1983-1993)

The Brilliant Corners might just have been the best band out of Bristol during the 1980s.
Taking their name from a Thelonious Monk jazz album, they issued ten singles, five albums and various compilations between 1983 and 1993. Many of them made the Indie Chart, from early efforts with hints of psychobilly and The Cramps to more melodic, C86-flavoured tracks (think The Smiths and The Housemartins) and later tracks with a hint of shoegazer and baggy about them.
In Davey Woodward, The Brilliant Corners were fronted by a handsome, charismatic singer who was also a talented songwriter – and Davey’s cooperated with this long-overdue anthology, helping with the track listing and supplying the entertaining sleeve-notes.
HEART ON YOUR SLEEVE is the most authoritative Brilliant Corners collection to date, boasting all their singles on the SS20 and McQueen labels plus numerous tracks which have never before been on CD and a handful of previously unissued demos and live tracks.

MIGHTY MIGHTY - POP CAN! THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION 1986-1988

Mighty Mighty were a popular Indie guitar pop combo hailing from Birmingham, who made their name as part of the so-called C86 scene championed by the NME on their famous cassette.
Between 1986 and 1988, the band issued six singles/EP’s and an album, all of which made the Indie Chart courtesy of their evocative mix of naggingly hummable tunes, poignant lyrics and a musical style which suggested a love of both The Smiths and Postcard-era Orange Juice.
After rave reviews for their first two singles, Everybody Knows The Monkey and Is There Anyone Out There?, Mighty Mighty signed to local label Chapter 22 (then home to Pop Will Eat Itself, etc.), eventually issuing their sole LP Sharks in 1988.
Pop Can! (the title doesn’t appear on the sleeve, a nod to Andy Warhol and the Velvet Underground!) is the first comprehensive compilation of Mighty Mighty’s recordings. Previous CDs are now impossible to find!
Those singles in full:
Everybody Knows The Monkey (1986, Girlie) Indie No.34
Is There Anyone Out There? (1986, Girlie) Indie No.14
Throwaway (1986, Chapter 22) Indie No.7
Built Like A Car (1987, Chapter 22) Indie No.6
One Way (1987, Chapter 22) Indie No.10
Maisonette (1988, Chapter 22) No.8
The compilation boasts remastered music as well as a beautifully annotated 16-page booklet boasting rare photos and personal memories from each band member.
