CHERRY RED JANUARY 2013 RELEASES

SCIENTISTS - SWAMPLAND: BIRTH OF THE SCIENTISTS

Formed in Perth, Australia, but later to relocate to Melbourne and then London, Kim Salmon’s Scientists played a brand of minimalist punked-up swamp blues that saw them become legends on at least three continents. Just about everyone loves the Scientist, from Sonic Youth and Mudhoney (both of whom have asked the band to play with them) to Henry Rollins – in fact, the entire US alt-rock hierarchy. And what’s not to like – this new compilation for the UK features the strongest tracks from the band’s legendary Blood Red River recordings, notably ‘Swampland’, one of the most evocative and best loved Australian songs of all time. But that’s not all: as well as the studio recordings, with Kim’s permission we’ve unearthed some dynamite live recordings from 1982 that have never been released anywhere before. The packaging includes a mammoth essay on the band’s history written by Alex Ogg, with full co-operation and humorous asides from Kim, plus photos and memorabilia. A handy starting point for those new to the band, featuring as it does the cream of the Scientists’ work from their acclaimed early Melbourne period, but spiced up with some amazing live tracks for the established fan.

MANDRILL - WE ARE ONE

If any Band encapsulated the essence of Funk’s pan ethnic mind expanding journey across Africa’s musical Diaspora it was Mandrill
Created in Panama & and raised in Brooklyn New York, Mandrill’s "We Are One” was their first Album for Clive Davis’ legendary Arista label.
Originally released in 1977 "We Are One” contains two classic slices of Funk ‘Can You Get It (Suzie Caesar)’ and ‘Funky Monkey’.
On this Robinsongs reissue you also get the 7” versions of these two cuts as Bonus Tracks. The album also features ‘Happy Beat’ and the single ‘Holiday’.
This re issue also features original sleeve notes by Brendon Griffin.

THE AARDVARKS - SINKER, LINE & HOOK (THE ANTHOLOGY 1987-99)

Inspired by the best in 60s sounds (Mod, garage, pop-art, psychedelia freakbeat), The Aardvarks were formed in the mid-1980s in Ealing, West London, as part of the same scene which eventually reared Kula Shaker.
For many years, they were one of the most popular bands on the Mod and 60s Revival circuit, issuing a string of acclaimed 45s on labels such as Screaming Apple and Detour.
The Aardvarks’ 12-year lifespan is remembered on this compilation, built around their 1995 album for Delerium, Bargain, while also offering an equal number of choice tracks from elsewhere.
The ‘Varks tasted brief fame in the 90s, appearing on the James Whale TV Show and even supporting Bonnie Tyler!

TERRORVISION - FORMALDEHYDE

Originally called the Spoilt Bratz, Bradford’s Terrorvision (named after an 80s US horror movie) signed to EMI Records in 1991 under their own imprint label, Total Vegas Recordings. Their very first single release, ‘My House’ from debut album, Formaldehyde (1992) gained favourable Top 30 chart action and it was no looking back for the party-rock-four-piece of Tony Wright (vocals), Leigh Marklew (Bass), Mark Yates (Guitar) and Ian "Shutty” Shuttleworth (drums).
Regular UK Single chart action continued with tracks such as, ‘Alice What’s The Matter’ (#24), ‘Oblivion’ (#21) and ‘Middle Man’ (#25) from their EMI sophomore album, How To Make Friends And Influence People, whilst ‘Perseverance’ (#5) and ‘Bad Actress’ (#10) from third album, Regular Urban Survivors saw the band’s fortunes improve even further. However, it was their homage to the intoxicating effects of Mexico’s favoured tipple, that Terrorvision moved further into the mainstream when ‘Tequila (Mint Royale Shot)’ (from fourth album Shaving Peaches), reached the #02 spot in 1999.
Officially released in December 1992, debut album "Formaldehyde” set-out the band’s anthemic party-rock manifesto with vim and vigour. Along with ‘My House’, further single releases such as ‘Problem Solved, ‘American T.V.’ and ‘New Policy One’ revealed the band’s knack of penning infectious sing-a-long choruses housed under a tough, gritty exterior. An appearance at Sheffield’s Don Valley Stadium in front of 30-40,000 rock fans as support and by personal request from Def Leppard in June ’93 helped their cause immensely, and the complete set-list recorded that day is featured on the second disc in this new 2CD Collector’s Edition of ‘Formaldehyde’.
Fully Re-Mastered and Expanded 2-Disc Collector’s Edition.
Adds 20-track second disc containing Single B-sides, Alternative Versions and Live performances.
Comprehensive story of the album sleeve-notes including a Q&A with bassist Leigh Marklew.
Visually packed 16 page booklet featuring rare photos and memorabilia images from the era.

At long last, the debut long-player from the mighty We've Got A Fuzzbox And We're Gonna Use It!! makes its Compact Disc debut in "Splendiferous" form on Cherry Red Records. Hailing from Birmingham, England, the punk-pop, all-female quartet, also known simply as Fuzzbox first made their mark on the nation when their debut single ‘XX Sex/Rules and Regulations’ stormed the UK indie charts reaching the coveted Indie #1 spot in 1986 for a staggering 9 week stint.

Cited as a "Loud, gaudy and mildly controversial both visually and aurally, with a willful raw amateurishness to theirplaying..." the band soon earned the respect of influential publications such as the NME, Melody Maker as well as recognition from DJ's Janice Long and the late, great John Peel. This 2CD/AA Sided "Splendiferous Edition" of the bands seminal classic "Bostin' Steve Austin" marks the album’s first CD release, some 27 years after its premiere on Vindaloo/WEA Records."Side A" features the original 12 track studio album, digitally remastered from its original analogue master tapes, whilst"Side AA" offers a comprehensive insight into the formative Fuzzbox years compiling 22 of the bands most rare and sought after recordings.Bonus materials include the bands debut EP "XX Sex/Rules and Regulations" [UK #41], collaboration single with Vindaloolabel mates, The Nightingales and Ted Chippington,‘Rockin' With Rita (Head To Toe)’[UK #56], B-sides from their UK Top 40 breakthrough single ‘Love Is The Slug’ [UK #31] and 7' follow-up ‘What's The Point’ [UK #51], their fuzz-tastic rendition of Queen's timeless classic ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, the fan club rarity ‘Radio Fuzzbox’, together with single exclusiveB-sides, 12-inch versions andthe previously unreleased ‘XX Sex (Gully Mix)’ and ‘Light Of The Silvery Moon’.Having taken the indie world by storm Fuzzbox went on to release their second album "Big Bang!" BLUE AEROPLANES - BEATSONGS

The Blue Aeroplanes burst out of Bristol in 1984, a pyrotechnic blur of dulcimers, bagpipes, turntables, dancing and lots of guitars, all bound together in tendrils of freeform poetry. For a select few they were a revelation, and the debut LP Bop Art was a source of comfort in trying musical times.
In 1989, the band signed a new deal with Ensign, and gained a new audience by touring the UK with long-time admirers REM. Those who witnessed the fourteen-guitar finale at the Hammersmith Odeon - where Stipe, Buck, Berry, Mills, half the road crew, and an assortment of music journalists joined the band on-stage for Breaking in My Heart - still speak in hushed tones. Fresh from this live triumph, the band headed for the studio, and began work on the superlative Swagger LP.
Swagger became the band's biggest critical and commercial success to date, bolstered by their new-found success and recognition, the band headed for LA to record the follow up to Swagger, entitled Beatsongs."The best album to bear a UK postmark in a long, long time" (Select)
This second album on the major label was their highest charting, reaching no. 33 in the UK album charts, this expanded version of the record, combines the album with a bonus disc of rare B-Sides and unreleased tracks all curated by Gerard Langley. Lovingly packaged in the classic Blue Aeroplanes style, this great record can only enforce the legacy of the band that still tour and release albums to this day

IAN MCNAB - HEAD LIKE A ROCK

Robert Ian McNabb is an acclaimed English singer-songwriter and musician from Liverpool, England. He is known both for his work as leader and songwriter-in-chief of The Icicle Works in the 1980s, and his critically acclaimed solo career throughout from the early 1990s to date. He has also played with musicians as diverse as Ringo Starr, Crazy Horse, Mike Scott (of The Waterboys), and Danny Thompson of folk legends Pentangle.
After the Icicle works split up Ian went solo and signed for Andrew Lauders This Way Up Label after releasing the well-received Truth and Beauty McNabb was allegedly inspired to a rockier sound by the engineer who mastered that record, telling him "Aye, Ian, your rocking days are behind you." Legend has it that McNabb went back to his home in Liverpool, and recorded a demo of what would become the coruscating opener of Head Like a Rock, "Fire inside My Soul".
Label boss Andrew Lauder then suggested that McNabb go to record in America, which McNabb was sceptical about. He facetiously suggested to Lauder that his new material sounded like Neil Young and Crazy Horse, and if Lauder could get Crazy Horse to play on the record, he would go to America. A few phone calls later, McNabb found himself in a Los Angeles studio with Crazy Horse drummer Ralph Molina and bassist Billy Talbot. This cast-iron rhythm section appeared on four of the ten tracks on Head like a Rock, including the No. 54 UK hit "You Must Be Prepared to Dream". The album's other single, "Go into the Light", did not feature Crazy Horse and peaked at UK No. 66.
Head like a Rock was subsequently nominated for the 1994 Mercury Music Prize, and although M People would end up taking the award home, the attendant publicity surrounding the award-nominated album propelled Head like a Rock into the UK album charts, where it peaked at No. 29.
This expanded version has been re-mastered by Ian himself and is a testament to the great album it was, enhanced with upgraded packaging and a bonus disc of the B-sides that came with the assorted singles this is a great addition to the canon of Ian’s work
