The Bible is one of those bands that writers and singers often cite
as one of their favourite bands of all time – they were hugely
critically acclaimed but never quite made the big commercial
breakthrough.
The Bible formed in the mid eighties around singer Boo Hewerdine, and keyboard/percussion player Tony Shepherd. They released debut album Walking the Ghost Back Home
in 1986 on independent record label Backs Records, enjoying a top-ten
hit on the UK Independent chart, & staying in the chart for ten
weeks.
This was followed by first single Graceland, which gave them a hit in the UK. Second single Mahalia
reached number 15 on the UK Independent Chart.
The album brought the
band to the attention of Chrysalis Records and a label deal ensued. In
January 1988, the band's second album, Eureka, was released with single Honey Be Good giving them another hit in 1989.
Soon afterwards the band dissolved (they insist they never actually
broke up) and the members moved onto other music projects. Boo Hewerdine
forged a successful solo career and numerous collaborations with the
likes of Eddi Reader and Chris Difford. Tony Shepherd is a successful
session player and sometime lecturer at Brighton Institute of Music.
Neill MacColl went on to form critically acclaimed act Liberty Horses
with his brother Calum before becoming an independent musician and
producer.
The Bible also performed at The Junction's opening party in Feb 1990!
