Folktronic - Momus

Folktronic
What if computers finally began getting more Africa in them? What if folk artists started emerging who sounded more post-modern than Cornelius or Pole? What would Click Folk or Glitch Folk sound like? What would Alan Lomax have said if, in 1965, the Newport Folk Festival had been invaded by boffins and geeks playing modular Moogs? What if you could hear, today, the Country Music of the year 2049? What about the Japanese country music of 2049? What would that sound like? What if electronics had appeared in 18th Century Scotland just at the moment of the Highland Clearances? How many mountains can you fit on a Minidisc? It's what Raymond Scott, Bruce Haack or Gary Numan might have sounded like if they'd jammed their way through the back catalogue of Steeleye Span. It's Shakespeare rendered in Flash 5 by a superlucid hyperactive Japanese geek. It's those prolific medieval songwriters Trad. and Anon. finding the missing link between unicorns and Unix. It's preposterous, provocative and prescient

Cherlokalate
Effervescent songbird Jane Weaver once again takes flight this Spring with this spellbinding collection of heartrending recordings. Having spent that past year residing under an apple tree on the outer limits of Greater Manchester putting the finishing touches to her new album immersed in the sounds of Linda Perhacs, Karen Dalton, Josephine Foster, These Trails and The Pink Fairies, the past few months have seen Jane travel over hill and over dale by special request to make a handful of rare live appearances across the UK and US alongside the likes of Voice Of The Seven Woods, Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals), Wendy Flower (Wendy & Bonnie), and most recently Josephine Foster.

Jane Weaver is a rare creature in the vanity-stricken world of female singers, and perhaps with a more generous roll of the dice we might all have heard of her. Serving her apprenticeship in the mid-nineties girl-guitar-pop outfit Kill Laura, Jane would go on to front Twisted Nerve's Misty Dixon and release her critically acclaimed solo mini-album, 'Like An Aspen Leaf', as well as recording a slew of singles with the help of Doves and an album for Mancunian music maverick Rob Gretton's Manchester Records which went unreleased following his death until Jane dusted down the tapes and released it through her very own Bird imprint.

'Cherlokalate' is the highly anticipated follow up to last years critically acclaimed debut album proper, 'Seven Day Smile' (2EGGS). Stripped back and laid bare, Jane's songwriting has moved from strength to strength and her dulcet tones have lost none of their potency. Jane's quiet riot continues unabashed as word spreads of her unassuming but bewitching talent.

Peace in the Heart of the City
This is a great title and describes accurately the contents of the album. It is very relaxing, peaceful, heartful, instrumental piano music. Morgan Fisher has had a fascinating career. Was originally the keyboard player in Love Affair who had a No 1 hit with "Everlasting Love" when he was 16 years old. Went on to join Mott The Hoople who had several top ten hits in the early to mid 70's. In 1978 he was one of the first musicians to form his own label, Pipe Music, recording the groundbreaking "Miniatures" album. In 1981 he played keyboards with Queen on their world tour. Since 1985 he has lived in Tokyo and has been very successful there writing music for TV commercials and film soundtracks. During this time he has recorded 12 albums and has built up a strong following in that country. This CD can be racked in both "New Age" sections and under his name "Morgan Fisher" as a known artist. The View from the Edge
Released 18/05/09. The View from the Edge is about the rolke of percussion in modern music and is a sequel to el's previous Varese edition, The Complete Works of Edgard Varese Volume 1 (ACMEM125CD). An important restoration of the composer's earliest recordings, the edition was greeted by great critical enthusiasm and sold especially healthily on export.

Varese also has a strong base in America, mostly by virtue of the association with Frank Zappa, who for years championed the work of this genius who today is regarded now as "The Father Of Electronic Music”; a man that has been described as the Leonardo da Vinci of modern music

‘Arcana’ and ‘Ionisation’ are the composer's key works; two of the most important of the twentieth century. Leonard Bernstein's historic seventeen minute Arcana with The New York Philharmonic is amongst the rarest Varese recordings The American Percussion Society's vigorous recording of ‘Ionisation’ has been inexplicably out of print for five decades

The Oliver Messiaen pieces are his first official recordings ever, dating from 1946 & 1947, and orginally released on 78 by Pathe. Both are beautifully performed by a young Yvonne Loriod.

Turning Point
Over the all too brief 40 years of his life, John Coltrane had a profound and far-reaching effect on the world of jazz and beyond. Yet acclaimed as he already was after spells as a sideman with giants such as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk, it was only in 1957 that his musical vision began to truly find focus. The "spiritual awakening" of which he spoke prompted him to make wholesale changes in his lifestyle. Out, went the bad habits that had made many fear for his life, to be replaced by an all-consuming quest to make music that transcended national and cultural boundaries, bringing both player and listener to a state of connectedness with God.

This edition illustrates that landmark year with selections from four important sessions; collaborations and first dates as leader with Tadd Dameron, Kenny Burrell, Tommy Flanagan and Red Garland. The listener will find abundant evidence of one of jazz’s undisputed greats demonstrating total mastery of the music that succoured him through his early years - blues, swing, bebop - and already beginning to hunger for fresh challenges. Coltrane’s eclectic attitudes, encouraged by his friendship with Ravi Shankar, would soon inspire The Byrds (‘Eight Miles High’), Jimi Hendrix, The Grateful Dead, The Doors, Tom Verlaine, The Stooges.
