Cymande - Cymande

Cymande
•    Cymande (pronounced Sah-mahn-day) are a legendary funk group formed in 1971 in London by musicians from Guyana, Jamaica and Saint Vincent. Their name was derived from a calypso word for Dove, symbolizing peace and love.

•    The band were signed by producer John Schroeder to his Alaska label in the UK (and Janus in North America). Cymande went on to release three albums in the early-to-mid 1970s.

•    Cherry Red Records are proud to reissue all three original Cymande albums.

•    Their debut, Cymande (1972), boasted perhaps their best-known funk anthem, ‘The Message’, and the much-sampled ‘Bra’, adopted by pioneering DJs like DJ Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash before being plundered by De La Soul.

•    This reissue boasts two non-album single edits and new sleeve-notes written with the cooperation with the band and John Schroeder.

This product is released June 30 2014 and will not be dispatched before this date.

News Bottles, Old Medicine
When, in early 1970, legendary Radio 1 DJ John Peel ventured up to Wolverhampton's Lafayette club to do a gig, he came upon two guys who called themselves Medicine Head, the uniquely configured duo of John Fiddler and Peter Hope-Evans. So impressed was Peel that he signed Medicine Head to his label, Dandelion Records and later that year released "New Bottles, Old Medicine" the 1st of three studio albums that Medicine Head would release on the revered label. The walrus-moustached Fiddler would simultaneously sing, play guitar and operate a bass drum and hi-hat cymbal with his foot, augmented by the equally hirsute Hope-Evans on harmonica, jaws harp, mouth bow and strange concoctions of percussion. More art school than rock'n'roll, Medicine Head wrote poetic, spiritual, thoughtful, folk-rock tunes that have stood the test of time. Now the band's debut album can be enjoyed again as Cherry Red Records continues it's programme of re-releasing classic albums from the Dandelion catalogue. "New Bottles, Old Medicine" follows hot on the heels of re-issues by Dandelion artists Bridget St John; Clifford T Ward; Principal Edwards Magic Theatre and also the acclaimed compilation box-set "Life Too, Has Surface Noise: The Complete Dandelion Records Singles Collection. Cherry Red Records releases "New Bottles, Old Medicine", the 1970 Dandelion Records debut release from John Peel favourite, Medicine Head Sonically restored and beautifully re-packaged with 7 bonus tracks, new artwork; poster-style sleeve, complete lyrics and extensive liner notes featuring an interview with songwriter and one half of Medicine Head, John Fiddler. Miniatures One + Two Edited by Morgan Fisher
Featuring artists as diverse as The Residents, Robert Fripp, XTC'sAndy Partridge, Pete Seeger, Robert Wyatt and The Pretenders Martin Chambers, as well as cover artwork contributed by Ralph Steadman, Morgan Fisher's1980 release Miniatures truly was a first. Overwhelmed with concepts for potential releases, Fisher decided to see how many of these ideas he might be able to squeeze onto just one album. Rather than performing everything himself, he invited 50 musicians he admired to send in tracks of up to one minute in length. They responded with unanimous enthusiasm, and Miniatures was born out of Morgan’s’ precise editing and sequencing of these tracks, providing a unique snapshot of the cutting-edge music of the period and achieving legendary status amongst those who cherish such creativity and individuality in the process. Fast forward 15 years, several projects and the development of new realms of communication and data transfer afforded by the Internet, and Morgan decided the time was right for a sequel. Little did he know that this project would take six years to complete and involve an international cast of players (taking in 18 countries across five continents), but it proved truly worth both the effort and the wait. The astounding Miniatures 2 brings together over 60 musicians and artists of all genres - the bizarre, the eccentric, the contemplative, the rebel-rousers, the pioneers and the philosophers and no stone was left unturned in its creation. As with the original album, one minute creations were composed, then sequenced and edited by Morgan, again meeting with rave reviews and an acknowledgement that Fisher had produced something both original and vital to those with any interest in music existing outside the mainstream. Comprising both legendary tiny masterpiece collections, this new set brings together all one hundred and thirteen tracks (yes, 113!) in one two-disc collection for the first time, freshly boosted and tweaked for 2008. Will Anything Happen
The Shop Assistants were one of the defining bands of the 80s independent boom. Formed in Edinburgh in 1984, originally as Buba & The Shop Assistants, they released the Peel-approved Indie staple ‘Something To Do’, which featured Stephen Pastel on backing vocals. With line-up changes and an abbreviated name, they released the ‘Shopping Parade’ EP a year later, which saw Morrissey describe ‘All Day Long’ (included on this collection) as his favourite track of the year. The band’s David Keegan (who would subsequently join the Pastels) then formed 53rd & 3rd Records, which housed the band’s ‘Safety Net’, one of two songs, along with ‘I Don’t Want To Be Friends With You’ (again, included here) to be voted part of John Peel’s Festive Fifty of 1986. The Shop Assistants, aka Will Anything Happen, is their sole album release, and is accompanied here by two bonus tracks; ‘Looking Back’ and the ‘slow version’ of ‘All Day Long’. Although reissued in 2001, it has long been out of print, fetching scary prices on a well known auction site in acknowledgement of its status as one of the indispensable articles of the C86/shambling/independent scene.

Slow Music
Recorded in 1980, this collaboration between master tape manipulator Morgan Fisher and legendary improvisational saxophonist Lol Coxhill sees the two explore a mutual interest in treating their work as mere raw material for further experimentation and re-modeling.
Working in Fisher’s Notting Hill home studio, Coxhill’s performances (including Handel’s ‘Largo’ and his own ‘Pretty Little Girl’) were recorded and reworked using a number of innovative studio techniques to create entirely new material, some of which was used as a background for further performances by the pair, the rest treated to further manipulation via tape delays, synthesiser filters and other electronic equipment, resulting in multi layered tape loop pieces, drones and sound collages.
Originally released on Pipe Records (funded by Cherry Red founder Iain McNay), this reissued edition has been remastered by Morgan himself, and is accompanied by a bonus track, ‘Play Quiet’. Originally available only on a cassette given away with the UK’s ‘ZG Magazine’, this piece features music performed by John White, Gavin Bryars and Dave Smith at the launch party for Fisher’s ‘Miniatures’ album and collaged with remixed material from "Slow Music”. A fantastic rarity available here on CD for the first time.
With sleeve-notes and reprographics by Fisher, including a timeline of both artists’ careers and their original texts from the 1980 release, this edition is a must have for fans of either artist, enthusiasts of home studio techniques and lovers of experimental recordings of any kind.
· Bonus track featuring John White and Gavin Bryars
· Digitally remastered
· Sleeve-notes and reprographics by Morgan Fisher

God
Named after a Roland Kirk album, RIP RIG + PANIC were one of the most exciting bands of the 1980s, fusing funk, jazz, punk and world music influences into a unique whole.
With lead singer NENEH CHERRY, the band recorded three albums for Virgin Records which have never been legitimately available on CD.
All three LPs are now remastered from the original master tapes with a raft of bonus tracks taken from non-album singles.
Original band members Gareth Sager (ex-Pop Group) and Mark Springer are involved with these releases, with the blessing of Neneh Cherry and (current PiL) drummer Bruce Smith.
Issued in 1981, GOD was RIP RIG + PANIC’s debut album, issued as a club-friendly 12” double-pack. It’s now swelled by the non-album singles ‘Go, Go, Go! (This Is It)’ and ‘Bob Hope Takes Risks’ and their B-sides plus the NME cassette track ‘Billy Eckstine’s Shirt Collar’.

Guiding the production of these reissues, Mark Springer is still heavily involved in the world of music and art. More information can be found at www.markspinger.net and www.exit.co.uk
