Jungle Fever: Expanded Edition - Chakachas

Jungle Fever: Expanded Edition
•    Belgian based Latin-soul group THE CHAKACHAS were formed in the 1950s by a group of Latin Soul studio musicians and included the famous Tito Puente’s wife, Kari Kenton on vocals and maracas.

•    CHAKACHAS were no strangers to hits with Eso es el amor, sung in Spanish, hitting #1 on the Belgian charts in 1958 and they got their first taste of UK pop chart action with Twist Twist reaching #48 in 1962.

•    In 1972 CHAKACHAS released their 6th studio album JUNGLE FEVER on Polydor records with the single of the same name becoming a huge success. JUNGLE FEVER climbed all the way to #8 on the US Hot 100 chart and by March of 1972 became certified Gold in the US after selling over one million copies and went on to peak at #29 in the UK where it caused such a stir within the BBC with the heavy breathing and moaning featured in the song that the BBC pulled it from airplay shortly after release.

•    To this day JUNGLE FEVER continues to bring CHAKACHAS notoriety having featured in the movie Boogie Nights and being sampled by numerous artists such as 2 Live Crew, Beatnuts, Public Enemy and Louie Vega as well as being featured on the smash hit Grand Theft Auto computer game franchise.

•    BBR is incredibly excited to present this fully expanded and lovingly re-mastered edition of CHAKACHAS – JUNGLE FEVER. Complete with extensive liner notes and added bonus content this BBR Remaster is a must have for all Latin, Soul, Disco Funk and R&B fans out there!

MFSB
M.F.S.B. (Mother Father Sister Brother) was the house band for Philadelphia International Records and worked very closely with the production team of Gamble & Huff. They backed up groups such as Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, The O’Jays, The Stylistics, The Spinners, Wilson Pickett and Billy Paul and are probably best known in their own right for providing the theme music for the legendary TV show Soul Train with ‘T.S.O.P. (The Sound Of Philadelphia)’. With the rise of the Philly soul sound at the beginning of the '70s, business was booming at GambleandHuff's Philadelphia International imprint and as a result M.F.S.B. were kept very busy in the studio providing backing for the aforementioned artists and leaving little time for the groups own recording sessions. It wasn’t until 1973 that the group had a chance to record material in its own name and released their self-titled debut album to high acclaim later that same year. MFSB features extended Funk-Soul-Jazz work-outs as on the seven-minute cover of Curtis Mayfield’s ‘Freddie's Dead’ that opens the set. The group also re-interpreted Sly Stone's ‘Family Affair’ to great effect while emphasising the flute as the driving force for their version of their label mates The O’Jays ‘Back Stabbers’ R&B chart topper from the previous year. The lush Disco/Pop sounds that informed the majority of the group’s later recordings, both in their own right and as the PIR house band, are featured on the other notable tracks on the album, in particular "Poinciana" which also features jazz-blues piano and guitar interjecting the soaring strings. ‘Something For Nothing’ (sampled by Groove Armada) also fits that description with a beautiful string led section that leads to an incredible motif on the horns which blasts through at just the right time, propelling the track forward. BBR is very proud to present MFSB, fully re-mastered and complete with extensive liner notes and bonus tracks. MFSB is a must for all R&B, Soul, Funk and Jazz fans out there!

Salsoul (Expanded Edition)
Joe Bataan was born and grew up in Spanish Harlem, New York, in the 103rd St and Lexington Avenue area of the city. It is argued that no recording artist has more genuine street cred than Joe Bataan, the originator of the New York Latin Soul style that paralleled Latin Boogaloo and anticipated disco, he decided to focus his considerable talents full time on his music in 1965 after being released from a short jail sentence as a youth. His musical experience had begun with street corner doo wop in the 1950s, and progressed through the years to include one of the first rap records to hit the charts, 1979's "Rap-O, Clap-O." In between these milestones, he recorded classic albums like Riot! And Saint Latin's Day Massacre on the Fania label, and Afrofilipino, which included one of the first New York disco hits, an instrumental version of Gil Scott-Heron's "The Bottle."

SALSOUL, which gave the record label its name, (Bataan co-founded the label with the Cayre brothers but soon relinquished his stake) and helped ignite the explosion of urban dance music was released on the Mericana label in 1973 to wide critical acclaim. SALSOUL is still as influential as ever and a cult rare groove album, as it was a prophetic statement at the time of its release. This album exemplifies Bataan’s visionary and culturally aware musical concept of Latin Soul fused with orchestral funk.

SALSOUL is drenched with infectious rhythms, passionate soul and Bataan’s gritty lyrics. Opener "Mi Nube” (My Cloud) sets the tone with propulsive rhythms, driving horns and great vocal phrasing and delivery. "Muchachu Ordinario” (Ordinary Guy) is a super smooth soulful strut which Bataan identified with strongly as he proclaimed himself to be just that, an ordinary guy from the streets. "Fin,” "Latin Strut” and "Aftershower Funk” are all uplifting instrumental workouts giving focus to deftly played chopping and/or wah-wah guitar and soaring flutes and horns amongst the rich assortment of Afro/Latin percussive grooves.

This newly remastered, expanded edition is an essential listen for all true music fans and comes packaged complete with extensive liner notes and added bonus content making this BBR re-master of SALSOUL a must have for all R&B, Funk, Soul, Latin, Afro/Cuban, Disco, and  Salsoul fans out there!

Tasty: Expanded Edition
•    With a career spanning five decades and numerous appearances in the charts and the music award circuit, Grammy Hall Of Fame inductee, Patti LaBelle sealed her fate as one of the great American Divas. Patti LaBelle started singing at church and later formed a singing group called Patti Labelle and the Bluebelles, later know as LaBelle. Patti and her group enjoyed many chart hits during their 15 years together including their number one, Allen Toussaint-produced gold selling single, Lady Marmalade. In 1977 Patti went solo and released her first solo album, Patti LaBelle, on Epic Records. Tasty, It’s Alright With Me and Released followed.

•    TASTY was produced by veteran hit maker David Rubinson and enjoyed an 8-week run of chart success in 1978, reaching #39 on the US R&B charts. The album’s singles, ‘Teach Me Tonight (Me Gusta Tu Baile),’ which features a young Sheila E. on percussion, and ‘Little Girls’ were both hit singles on the Billboard Soul chart whilst ‘Eyes In The Back Of My Head’ and ‘Save The Last Dance For Me’ were issued in Disco remix form and gathered a club audience.
