A Scratch In The Sky: Deluxe Expanded Mono Edition - Cryan' Shames (The)

A Scratch In The Sky: Deluxe Expanded Mono Edition
• ESSENTIAL SUNSHINE/PSYCH POP FROM 1967!
• RARE LATE MONO MIX — FIRST TIME EVER ISSUED ON CD!
• SOURCED FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES!

The Cryan’ Shames’ second album, 1967's A Scratch In The Sky, is an unsung gem of that heady musical era. The set’s distinctive mix of youthful garage-rock energy, sophisticated psychedelic-pop songcraft and forward-thinking studio experimentation reflects the spirit of the times and captures the sound of an ambitious band of young perfectionists (already regional stars in their hometown of Chicago) making a quantum creative leap into exciting new territory.

On A Scratch In The Sky, The Cryan’ Shames trade in the familiar rock ’n’ roll and soul covers that dominated their first album for a set of haunting, emotionally resonant, and experimental original compositions (plus a transcendent reading of the Carole King/Gerry Goffin-penned Drifters classic ‘Up on the Roof’) that are bolstered by adventurous soundscapes.

In addition to the album—presented in its original MONO mix for the first time on CD—two non-LP singles and five single versions are included, and all are sourced from the ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES.

The deluxe, full-colour booklet also includes rare photos and extensive liner notes by music historian Scott Schinder that feature the participation of original band members. Mastered by ALAN BROWNSTEIN from the ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES!

Reissue Produced by STEVE STANLEY.

Gettin' Dirty

BMX Bandits are a Scottish 1960s-influenced guitar pop band who have been making music from 1986 to the present day. They have shared members with other Bellshill bands Teenage Fanclub and The Soup Dragons.

True heroes of the underground certainly the Scottish music underground defiantly of the Bellshill scene. Duglas T. Stewart has been the mainstay of this band that has featured members of The Teenage Fanclub and The Vasalines. Their sound is as much west coast Americana as it is west Scotland

Their songs are full of heartbreak and humour mixed with a laid back guitar sound that amongst many others attracted the attention of Kurt Cobain who was famously photographed wearing their T-shirts and claiming that they were the only other band he would like to be in.

Gettin' Dirty includes the single of the same and the Love Come To Me single. This edition includes all the b-sides and the fantastic cover of the Jonathan Richman song Summer Feeling perfect for the great summer we are all about to enjoy. It also includes sleeve notes by Duglas and images dug out from his loft.

Year One
Released 29/06/09. The Golden Gate was the brainchild of Reid Whitelaw and Billy Carl, two songwriters reeling from the recent success of penning and singing on the 1910 Fruitgum Company’s 1968 hit “Goody Goody Gumdrops.” 1969’s Year One would follow a different path. Aided with some of New York and Philadelphia’s finest studio musicians—and the background vocals of none other than members of The Tradewinds (“New York’s A Lonely Town”)—The Golden Gate bridged lushly orchestrated soft pop, Bacharach-influenced Brill pop, Beach Boys/Four Seasons-influenced harmonies, with slight bubblegum affectations. The Golden Gate was not long for this world and ceased operation shortly after the release of this, their lone LP. Coveted by Japanese soft pop collectors for years, it’s not uncommon for mint original copies of Year One to fetch three figures. Making its worldwide CD debut, Year One is augmented by 7 Bonus Tracks, which were culled directly from original master tapes. Our Price: £9.95

Between The Sea And The Sky
Imagine coming off the back of a defunct group, with no hits, but who have admittedly just released one of the best pop psych singles in the UK ever, and being thrown into George Martins Air Studios on a publishing/production deal and told there you are boys "make an album".

A slight license with the factual there but essentially this is what happened to Martin Briley and Brian Engel .In 1969, late of Mandrake Paddle Steamer and their classic 'Strange Walking Man', these late teens art students were given access to Air Studios and budgets for orchestras plus musicians to come up with hit singles. What they actually came up with was an almost concept album that exhibited all that had influenced them to that point, and let loose their humour and imagination. Sadly with the exception of one single ('Pale Green Vauxhall Driving Man') released under the name Prowler, a couple of years after the event, the recordings lay on the shelf, and are released for the first time now.

Briley played with GreAenslade and then as session guitarist with the Hunter Ronson band, Meatloaf and Ellen Foley. Three solo albums and a US top 40 hit 'Salt In My Tears' followed. He continues as a songwriter for international artists and backing vocalist.

United We Stand
In the beginning, Tony Hiller created The Brotherhood of Man. Formed in the recording studio and launched into a world at war over Vietnam, peace certainly won the day on vinyl in 1970 with the group‘s top ten single ‘United We Stand’ and accompanying album’s original sleeve notes announcing the groups arrival "with an eloquent and convincing plea to unite”.

The Brotherhood of Man would eventually win a very different war with a very different line-up in Europe at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1976. A different time, place, sound. RPM’s collection, concentrates on their old testament with chief peacemakers Johnny Goodison, Tony Burrows, Roger Greenaway, Hal Atkinson, Russell Stone and the brit girl sisterhood of Sue Glover and Sunny Leslie. Featuring the complete 1970 album now with corresponding non-album Asides and B-sides together with Sue and Sunny’s soulful Deram 45s from the same period. United We Stand unites the best session singers and songwriters of the late sixties and early seventies in total harmony with both their record buying public and the charts of the times.

Diamond Touch
Born in West Palm Beach, Florida in 1944, George McCrae started his musical career singing in church and later joining the glee club at school. He formed his own singing group called The Jivin’ Jets before joining the navy in 1963 and reformed the group on his return in 1967 with the addition of his wife Gwen before they later decided to work as a duo on Henry Stone’s Alston label before Gwen went solo and George worked on sessions until a chance moment had him record Rock Your Baby, written by Harry Wayne Casey and Richard Finch of KC and the Sunshine Band.
Following the huge success of ‘Rock Your Baby’, Grammy Award Nominee, GEORGE McCRAE, followed with the release of his self-titled second solo effort in 1975 (both available on BBR), the latter of which was very well received in the US and even more so in the UK.
The follow up album DIAMOND TOUCH, released in 1976, continues in the rich vein of his previous two LPs. Recorded in New York and produced by Gregg Diamond (hence the title) DIAMOND TOUCH spawned the single ‘Love In Motion’, a super-funky disco stomper with a down and dirty clavinet vamp that drives the track (courtesy of Robert Geiger), and an inspired sax solo from Joe Ferguson, which typifies the strength of Groove across the album, complementing Georges incredible and incomparable Soul vocal talents.
BBR is very proud to present this newly re-mastered and stunningly re-packaged expanded edition of DIAMOND TOUCH complete with extensive liner notes and additional bonus content.
This BBR re-master is a must have item for any Soul, Disco and R&B fans! Especially those who have picked up the BBR re-masters of "Rock Your Baby” and "George McCrae” and want to add to their McCrae collection.
