From A Whisper To A Scream: Expanded Edition - Esther Phillips

From A Whisper To A Scream: Expanded Edition
•    Justifiably hailed as her ‘career’ album, FROM A WHISPER TO A SCREAM re-established the late Esther Phillips as a prominent soul and jazz artist in 1972, starting her most fruitful period as an international chartmaker through her five-year association with jazz industry veteran Creed Taylor’s Kudu Records.

•    Originally a chart-topping child star with the Johnny Otis band in the early ‘50s, Little Esther battled drug addiction off and on throughout the ‘60s during which she achieved some success with ‘Release Me’ (1963) and ‘And I Love Him’ (1965). Esther recorded some critically acclaimed albums for Atlantic before entering rehab in 1969.

•    The sessions for FROM A WHISPER TO A SCREAM in December 1971 found her surrounded by stellar players such as Gordon Edwards (bass), Bernard Purdie (drums), Airto Moreira (percussion), Cornell Dupree and Eric Gale (guitar), Richard Tee (keyboards) and labelmate Hank Crawford (on sax on selected tracks).

•    Handpicking the material herself, Esther included some R&B hits of the time – The Originals’ ‘Baby I’m For Real,’ Eddie Floyd’s ‘’Til My Back Ain’t Got No Bone’ – alongside two songs penned by Allen Toussaint, including the stirring title track.  The album’s most notable cut was her true-to-life version of Gil Scott-Heron’s ‘Home Is Where The Hatred Is,’  which she was initially reluctant to record  given its direct references to heroin addiction.

•    Originally reissued in 1988 with (four) bonus tracks, this expanded edition has been out of print for several years. Notes by SoulMusic.com founder David Nathan include quotes from a 1973 interview with Esther.

•    This CD is released 21st April and will not be shipped prior to this date.

Gettin' Dirty

BMX Bandits are a Scottish 1960s-influenced guitar pop band who have been making music from 1986 to the present day. They have shared members with other Bellshill bands Teenage Fanclub and The Soup Dragons.

True heroes of the underground certainly the Scottish music underground defiantly of the Bellshill scene. Duglas T. Stewart has been the mainstay of this band that has featured members of The Teenage Fanclub and The Vasalines. Their sound is as much west coast Americana as it is west Scotland

Their songs are full of heartbreak and humour mixed with a laid back guitar sound that amongst many others attracted the attention of Kurt Cobain who was famously photographed wearing their T-shirts and claiming that they were the only other band he would like to be in.

Gettin' Dirty includes the single of the same and the Love Come To Me single. This edition includes all the b-sides and the fantastic cover of the Jonathan Richman song Summer Feeling perfect for the great summer we are all about to enjoy. It also includes sleeve notes by Duglas and images dug out from his loft.

Flying Again / Airborne
To many people, the mere mention of West Coast country rockers The Flying Burrito Brothers evokes memories of the talismanic Gram Parsons, continuing to live out hisAmerican cosmic music dream. True, Parson’s brief tenure with the band fell in between his even shorter time with The Byrds and his sadly equally short-lived solo career. But as these two Flying Burrito Brothers albums, along with a career that lasted even into the new Millennium, there’s a lot more to the Flying Burritos than Gram Parsons. When Gram Parsons died in September 1973, the legend surrounding his death led to increased interest in his musical legacy. A&M, keen to cashin, released the compilation album Close Up The Honky Tonks in 1974. This in turn prompted band members Ethridge and Kleinow to revive The Flying Burrito Brothers, this time with ex-Byrds guitarist Gene Parsons and country musicians Floyd Gib Guilbeau and Joel Scott Hill. The new-look band signed to Columbia Records, and released Flying Again , the first of these two albums in 1975. It ‘s a perfect example of the way country rock music had developed since The Byrds broke new ground with Sweetheart Of The Rodeo through to the manner in which the likes of the Eagles and Jackson Browne were now beginning to command American airwaves. Our Broadside release brings together their two fantastic Epic/CBS albums from 1977 and 1978 – in their entirety. Hollywood Brats
Formed in 1972 the Hollywood Brats were Punk long before the term was invented. Dressed in make-up and women's blouses they sought to shock, whilst making the music they wanted to make. The packaging for this CD has been lovingly assembled with biographies from both vocalist Andrew Matheson and guitarist Brady plus all the lyrics. The digital mastering was undertaken by keyboard player Casino Steel.

Megaton
A thrilling, no-holds-barred, heavy rock treatment
of a clutch of riff-based but fairly commercial pop tunes,
Megaton'ssole album has plenty of admirers these days. Perhaps
this should be a rock label staple, but the LPs origins are more pop
than that with more akin to those ranks of over looked production
library classics recorded for one purpose and taking on a different
guise and importance to collectors years later. For Megaton is
the creative inspiration of vocal harmony leader Les Humphries (as in
The Les Humphries Singers, big hit makers in early 70'sGermany) and his
writing partner/right hand LHS man, Jimmy Bilsbury. Perhaps
having the likes of future Uriah Heep vocalist John Lawton in the midst
of the LHS was an inspiration, but whatever, Humphries nose for a
commercial opportunity sniffed out the Free, Led Zep hard rock/ blues
rock market and he duly delivered. A 1971 Deram release, first in
Germany, other territories later inc. South America, and the UK -where
today such a pressing can set you back over £700 ! RPM presents
it'sfirst legitimate reissue on CD.
