Freedom For The Stallion (Expanded Edition) - Hues Corporation (The)

Freedom For The Stallion (Expanded Edition)
THE HUES CORPORATION was a soul trio formed in 1969 in Santa Monica, California by band mates St. Clair Lee, Fleming Williams and Hubert Ann Kelley. Their first break came in 1972 with the Blaxploitation film, Blacula, in which they made a small appearance, in addition to recording three songs for the soundtrack.  It was shortly following this that they were signed to RCA where they released their debut album, FREEDOM FOR THE STALLION, now making its international CD debut on BBR!

The Allen Toussaint penned, FREEDOM FOR THE STALLION - beautifully arranged by Gene Page at the height of his success with Barry White - was The Hues Corporation's first RCA single. The timely, socially conscious message in the song, with its anthemic quality, was a worthy introduction of The Hues Corporation to the American public, as it peaked at #63 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Keen to illustrate the versatility of their new signing, RCA decided to issue the more light-hearted and pop orientated, MIRACLE MAKER (SWEET SOUL SHAKER) as the bands second single. The song was penned by legendary Brill Building songwriters Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil and seemed destined to take on the top 40, however, unbeknownst to RCA it was another album cut that was creating a stir in a new bubbling underground scene that was poised to spread across the world from New York City.

Penned by Waldo T. Holmes, ROCK THE BOAT was one of the key tracks selected by underground DJs in New York’s burgeoning early disco scene and when RCA execs learned of this, promotions of the previous single were abandoned, and ROCK THE BOAT was rush released as the albums third single in February of 1974. ROCK THE BOAT rose to an impressive #3 on the R&B charts while doing even better on the Hot 100, becoming the first record of the Disco era to top the charts. Despite the popular success of the singles, the album takes inspiration from some of the best vocal groups of the time including The 5th Dimension and The Undisputed Truth, showcasing the true variation of musical styles contained within

BBR is proud to present this fully expanded edition of THE HUES CORPORATION – FREEDOM FOR THE STALION complete with extensive liner notes, interviews and added bonus content, making this a must have for all R&B, Disco, Funk and Soul fans out there!

Flying Again / Airborne
To many people, the mere mention of West Coast country rockers The Flying Burrito Brothers evokes memories of the talismanic Gram Parsons, continuing to live out hisAmerican cosmic music dream. True, Parson’s brief tenure with the band fell in between his even shorter time with The Byrds and his sadly equally short-lived solo career. But as these two Flying Burrito Brothers albums, along with a career that lasted even into the new Millennium, there’s a lot more to the Flying Burritos than Gram Parsons. When Gram Parsons died in September 1973, the legend surrounding his death led to increased interest in his musical legacy. A&M, keen to cashin, released the compilation album Close Up The Honky Tonks in 1974. This in turn prompted band members Ethridge and Kleinow to revive The Flying Burrito Brothers, this time with ex-Byrds guitarist Gene Parsons and country musicians Floyd Gib Guilbeau and Joel Scott Hill. The new-look band signed to Columbia Records, and released Flying Again , the first of these two albums in 1975. It ‘s a perfect example of the way country rock music had developed since The Byrds broke new ground with Sweetheart Of The Rodeo through to the manner in which the likes of the Eagles and Jackson Browne were now beginning to command American airwaves. Ladies Night: Expanded Edition

· KOOL & THE GANG need no introduction. They were the top selling Soul group of the 70’s and 80’s having sold over 70 million albums worldwide and have received countless awards. Without them we would not have such great hits as "Summer Madness,” "Get Down On It,” "Celebration” and who could forget that slammin’ funk monster that features so heavily in Quentin Tarantino’s cult flick - Pulp Fiction; "Jungle Boogie.”

· 1979 would see Kool & The Gang release LADIES NIGHT, their 13th studio album. LADIES NIGHT was a departure from the group’s edgier Funk sound that had brought them plenty of success throughout the 1970’s. The decision was made to bring in the Grammy Award winning Brazilian musician Eumir Deodato as producer, which heralded a smoother and more pop focused era for Kool & The Gang and strengthened their grip on both the R&B and Pop charts on both sides of the Atlantic.

· LADIES NIGHT, with its combination of pure, straight ahead dance cuts and down tempo soul pop helped Kool & The Gang strike a new chord with the music buying public and quickly hit the top of the U.S. R&B album chart as a result. The album also easily crossed over and peaked at #13 on the Pop chart.

· Singles featured on LADIES NIGHT include the title track, which rocketed to #1 on the U.S. R&B chart while gaining top ten spots on both the U.S. and U.K. Pop charts. "Too Hot” followed suit, landing at #3 R&B, #5 U.S. Pop and #23 in the U.K. singles chart. While not as successful as the previous two singles "Hangin’ Out” still gained a very respectable chart position slowing at #36 on the U.S. R&B and #52 on the U.K. chart.

· BBR is proud to present LADIES NIGHT. This fully expanded and re-mastered edition comes complete with extensive liner notes, with new interviews, and added bonus material.

· This BBR re-master is a must have for all R&B, Soul, Funk, Disco and Pop fans out there!
