Tymes Up (Expanded Edition) - Tymes (The)

Tymes Up (Expanded Edition)

Philadelphia-based group The Tymes - who first came to prominence in 1963 with the timeless classic ‘So Much In Love’ – ended a six-year dry spell as chartmakers in 1974 with ‘You Little Trustmaker’ (a Top 20 hit in the US and UK), marking the beginning of a new period of success for the famed vocal harmony team.

Following the success  of their first RCA album (entitled Trustmaker which included the UK chart topper, ‘Ms. Grace’), the group – consisting of original members Al Berry,  George Williams and Norman Burnett along with Donald Banks, Wade Davis and Jerry Ferguson) –cut TYMES UP with longtime mentor, manager, producer and songwriter Billy Jackson at the helm.

Recorded at famed Sigma Sound studios in both New York and Philadelphia, the sessions for TYMES UP included such renowned personnel as arranger Richie Rome, conductor Don Renaldo (with the TSOP horns and strings) and top players, drummer Bernard Purdie and guitarist Cornell Dupree.  Ace remix producer Tom Moulton mixed the entire project and TYMES UP became a Top 40 R&B LP.

Primary hit single from the LP was ‘It’s Cool’ (which reached No. 3 on the US R&B charts), penned by the team of Chuck Jackson & Marvin Yancy (at the time, producing consistent hits with Natalie Cole); other singles included ‘Only Your Love’ and ‘To The Max(imum),’ both Top 3 Billboard-charted Disco Singles.

This 2014 expanded edition marks the first CD reissue of the LP worldwide, includes two single edits and liner notes by renowned UK writer Charles Waring with quotes from songwriter (and future recording artist) Fonzi Thornton.

California Sunset- Expanded Edition
BBR delves deep into the vaults of Motown to bring you an exclusive, never before on CD, reissue of California Sunset by The Originals. This highly sought after album is considered one of THE ultimate underground Motown classics by Soul fans everywhere.

Formed in 1966, THE ORIGINALS worked as studio backup singers and featured on tracks like What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted by Jimmy Ruffin, For Once In My Life by Stevie Wonder and Edwin Starr’s politically fuelled jam, War. The group was made up of four singers, the group's baritone and founder Walter Gaines, tenors Hank Dixon and C.P. Spencer, an original member of Spinners and also bass singer, Freddie Gorman, who was one of the writers of Please Mr. Postman.

By 1970 Spencer had gone solo and was replaced by Ty Hunter who had been the lead singer with Scherrrie Payne in the R&B group, The Glass House.

In the late 60s, under the guidance and writing expertise of Al Green, The Originals scored two of their biggest hits early in their career with Baby I'm For Real and the Gold certified, The Bells. Produced by one of Motown’s legendary producers, Lamont Dozier, California Sunset contains smooth instrumentation and warm vocals befitting of the album title. Tracks like the R&B hit, Good Lovin Is Just A Dime Away and Sweet Rhapsody along with the title track all help secure this as one of the smoothest Soul albums to ever come out of Motor City.

Emerald City
The late, great TEENA MARIE had established herself as a consistent hitmaker as a result of five albums for Motown; after signing with Epic Records in 1983, the multi-talented singer, songwriter, producer and musician released Robbery (reissued by SoulMusic Records in 2012 as an expanded edition, SMCR-5047) following it with her breakthrough 1984 set Starchild (which contained the major hit single, ‘Lovergirl’ (reissued by SoulMusic Records as an expanded edition (SMCR-5048).
The 1986 critically-acclaimed set EMERALD CITY (a US Top 20 R&B best-seller), had a distinctly different flavour from its predecessor: considered more of a concept album from a lyrical standpoint, the eight-track set showcased Teena’s expressive creativity as a songwriter with original compositions like ‘Lips To Find You,’ ‘Shangri La,’ ‘Love Me Down Easy’ and ‘Sunny Skies.’
Star players who worked on EMERALD CITY included jazz greats Branford Marsalis and Stanley Clarke, blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan and funkateer Bootsy Collins alongside ‘A’ list musicians such as Nathan East, Paulinho DaCosta, Abraham Laboriel and John Robinson.
This expanded edition of EMERALD CITY features six bonus cuts including two tracks from soundtracks to which Teena contributed, ‘Lead Me On’ (from "Top Gun”) and the dance hit ‘14K’ (from "The Goonies!).
Essay by renowned US writer A. Scott Galloway include quotes from key players involved with the project.

Sons of the Gods
RIPPLE were an interracial R&B/Funk/Soul group that came together in Michigan, Illinois in the early 1970’s. With their radio friendly funky sound, which could evoke Kool & The Gang and Stevie Wonder, Ripple first charted in 1973 while signed to GRC Records with the groove classic "I Don’t Know What It Is, But It Sure Is Funky” which peaked at #11 R&B and #67 Pop and was featured on their eponymous debut album released in the same year.

After hitting the upper reaches of the R&B singles chart throughout the middle of the 1970’s Ripple moved from GRC Records to the increasingly influential Salsoul Record label to record and release their second album, SONS OF THE GODS in 1977. By this time the group had developed their sound and were just as adept at laying down their trademark Funky Soulful grooves as they were introducing more Pop and Jazz elements to their repertoire.

With Salsoul Records behind them Ripple were able to create a set of very strong dance grooves that more than stand up to the releases of many of their contemporaries of the time. The only single to be released from SONS OF THE GODS was the aptly titled ‘The Beat Goes On And On,’ a solid funky groove that continued the groups success on the Billboard R&B singles chart peaking at #91 in March of 1978. SONS OF THE GODS employs every element of the group to great effect with slick Afro/Latin percussion and smooth interplay between the horns, keyboards and guitar parts while lead singer Keith Samuels holds the R&B/Funk/Soul/Jazz/Disco melting pot together with his assured soulful vocals.

Other very notable grooves on this album are the opener ‘Call Me Traveling Man’ and the funky closer ‘Do What You Gotta Do.’
BBR is very proud to present SONS OF THE GODS, expertly re-mastered and complete with extensive liner notes and bonus track. SONS OF THE GODS is absolutely essential listening for all R&B, Soul, Jazz and Pop fans out there!
