Carl Carlton: Expanded Edition - Carl Carlton

Carl Carlton: Expanded Edition
•    CARL CARLTON, born in 1952 and hailing from Detroit, Michigan, was an R&B, Funk and Soul singer/songwriter who is arguably best known for his crossover hits "Everlasting Love” from 1974 and the Leon Haywood penned "She's A Bad Mama Jama (She's Built, She's Stacked)” from 1981 which features on this, his eponymously titled album release from the same year. Carlton's career got started through the most coincidental of circumstances - while playing baseball with friends in a vacant lot a neighbour called down and yelled for the boys to "stop playing and turn that radio off,” the reply came back, "that ain't no radio, that's Carl.” Within a short space of time the astonished neighbour had helped Carlton secure a deal with Lando Records in the mid-sixties, recording under the name "Little” Carl Carlton, as his voice had similarities to Stevie Wonder.

•    After moving on to Back Beat Records and working with the likes of Gamble/Huff and Bunny Sigler, where he recorded several favourites on the Northern Soul scene, and which culminated in the #6 Pop hit "Everlasting Love,” Carlton put a period of inactivity behind him in the late 70's when Leon Haywood helped him get a singles deal with 20th Century Fox Records in 1980 and took on the production duties.

•    The first single to be released from CARL CARLTON was Haywood's "This Feeling's Rated X-tra,” (R&B #57) a solid, low tempo, funky ode to doing the nasty, with a stunning combination of smooth strings and punching horn refrains and was backed with James Ingram’s "Fighting In The Name Of Love”. The success of the first single led to the release of "She's A Bad Mama Jama (She's Built, She's Stacked)” (R&B #2/Pop #22/UK #34). This iconic track, which opens up with its unmistakeable and infectious rising bass line before giving way to the chorus and celebrating the physical virtues of the "She” in question, is now undeniably a classic R&B single. The crossover success of this single gave Carlton a greater audience for the forthcoming album and CARL CARLTON climbed to #34 on the Billboard Hot 200 giving the singer a career renaissance. "Sexy Lady and "I Think It's Gonna Be Alright,” were also released as singles, the latter reaching #65 on the R&B chart.

•    BBR is proud to release CARL CARLTON, this fully remastered and re-packaged edition comes with extensive liner notes and bonus content and is a must for all R&B, Funk, Soul and Disco fans out there!

The follow up album DIAMOND TOUCH, released in 1976, continues in the rich vein of his previous two LPs. Recorded in New York and produced by Gregg Diamond (hence the title) DIAMOND TOUCH spawned the single ‘Love In Motion’, a super-funky disco stomper with a down and dirty clavinet vamp that drives the track (courtesy of Robert Geiger), and an inspired sax solo from Joe Ferguson, which typifies the strength of Groove across the album, complementing Georges incredible and incomparable Soul vocal talents.

Friends 2CD
Shalamar’s Friends was one of the biggest and most celebrated classic soul albums of the 1980s. BBR is proud to present the first ever deluxe edition of the album.
Shalamar was formed in 1977 by Dick Griffey, the booking agent for the legendary R&B TV show Soul Train, and British music producer, Simon Soussan. Initially they used faceless session musicians but when their first single, ‘Uptown Medley’ (R&B #10 / Pop #25) found chart success Griffey created a permanent group. After ‘Take That To The Bank’ (US R&B #11 / Pop #79) Shalamar’s classic line-up of Jody Watley, Jeffrey Daniel and Howard Hewitt continued to have chart success on both sides of the Atlantic with infectious pop-soul cuts like ‘The Second Time Around’ (US R&B #1 / Pop #8) and ‘Make That Move’ (US R&B #6 / Pop #60) all released on Griffey’s Solar imprint.
In 1982 the group released their seventh studio album FRIENDS, which enhanced on the soul groove sound that had brought the group previous success. The opening track and lead US single from the album ‘A Night To Remember’ (US R&B #8 / Pop #44) became an instant R&B classic. The second single in the US was the album closer ‘I Can Make You Feel Good’ (US R&B #33 / Pop #102), another classic mid-tempo R&B dancer that does exactly as it suggests.
FRIENDS enjoyed massive popularity and unprecedented chart success in the UK, becoming one of the biggest selling alums of the year. FRIENDS peaked at #6 on the UK album chart during an incredible 72-week run. The four singles for the UK market, ‘I Can Make You Feel Good’, ‘A Night To Remember’, ‘There It Is’ and ‘Friends’ reached #7, #5, #5 and #12 respectively on the UK singles chart helping Shalamar retain huge popularity to this day. Jeffrey Daniel introduced body popping and the back slide (later renamed the moon walk by Daniel’s student, Michael Jackson) to UK TV audiences on Top Of The Pops in July of 1982 when promoting ‘A Night to Remember’.
BBR is very proud to bring you FRIENDS, completely re-mastered and repackaged complete with extensive liner notes and extended bonus content including a new interview with Jody Watley and a second disc of alternative versions from the US and UK single releases.
