Hello Josephine - 30 Rhythm & Beat Classics 1964-1966 - Scorpions

Hello Josephine - 30 Rhythm & Beat Classics 1964-1966
•    THE SCORPIONS were a mid-Sixties beat band from Manchester, who enjoyed significant success across the water in Holland.

•    This 30-track compilation assembles the cream of their prolific output for Dutch label CNR between 1964-66.

•    The CD is named after their biggest hit, ‘Hello Josephine’, which proved to be one of the most popular songs in Holland in the 1960s.

•    Also included are their other singles (such as ‘Balla, Balla’, ‘Greensleeves’, ‘Bye Bye Johnny’, ‘Johnny B’ Goode’, ‘So Mystifying’, ‘What Did I Say’, ‘Sweet And Lovely’ and ‘Mojo’).

•    The compilation also boasts choice album tracks from their albums Hello Josephine, Keep In Touch With…, Climbing The Charts and Sweet And Lovely.

•    Surviving members of The Scorpions have contributed to the release, from rare photos to being interviewed for the sleeve-notes.

•    The band still play sporadic shows in Holland, where they still appeal to Nederbeat fans.

The Huge World Of Emily Small
Released 19/10/09. A hugely improved sound quality re-master based on the Japanese CD edition of The Huge World of Emily Small CD. One of those albums that just seems to have slipped under the radar of most UK pop psych collectors. The band (essentially a duo lead by Rod Edwards and Roger Hand, who would later record as Edwards Hand) flourished briefly in the late 60's releasing this one album. With them is the cream of UK session men including Danny Thompson (bass), Alan Hawkshaw (keys), Herbie Flowers (bass) and Harold McNair (flute). The Picadilly Line even managed an appearance at The Middle Earth club in London, the then hallowed centre of the UK psychedelic scene. The album is breezy post Sergeant Pepper psychedelic pop with plenty of swinging London vibes, orchestration and evocative whimsical lyrics.

Élucubrations (Antoine On 45 1965–1966)

Elucubrations – Antoine on 45 1965–1966 is the first time the complete tracks from the earliest EPs  by France’s Antoine have been collected – including, as a special bonus, the first-ever reissue of his rare English-language single from 1966.

Antoine was France’s Bob Dylan – his every song a word-filled counterpart to ‘Subterranean Homesick Blues’.

He made waves. France had never seen or heard anything like Antoine. Johnny Hallyday ridiculed his long hair in song. Jacques Dutronc made his debut single ‘Et Mo Et Moi Et Moi’ as a comment on Antoine. He hung out in New York with the Velvet Underground.

His early releases were joyful, tumbling slices of commentary on the issues of the day from war, to the generation gap.

Now he is known from books and television as globe-trotting adventurer, sailing the world’s oceans. This is where the journey began.

Modernism And Bossa Nova
•    Vinicius de Moraes, Rio de Janeiro born poet and diplomat (worked for the Brazilian Foreign Ministry in North America, France and Uruguay). A truly singular figure in his nation's culture.

•    In 1954 he wrote the play Orfeu da Conceição , which was soon adapted by French director Marcel Camus into the film, Black Orpheus, a controversial, but enormously popular movie which impressed early 1960s audiences with its beautiful soundtrack and panoramic technicolor views of Rio de Janeiro.

Throughout the sixties, Vinicius is at the centre of Bohemian Rio, collaborating with Carlos Lyra, Nara

Hello Everyone - Popsike Sparks From Denmark Street 1968-70
•    Between 1968 and 1970, some of the finest, most obscure British psychedelic pop singles of the era escaped on the Spark label, the newly-inaugurated recording arm of long-established publishers Southern Music.

•    Recorded in the basement studio of the company’s Denmark Street premises, these tracks often featured the same cabal of musicians and songwriters, leading to a homogenous in-house style that perfectly encapsulates the late 1960s British pop-psych studio sound.

•    The best of Spark’s impressive roster is now collected on CD for the first time on Hello Everyone: Popsike Sparks from Denmark Street 1968-70, which assembles highly-prized, highly-priced 45s from pre-Rare Bird band Fruit Machine, Gene Latter, post-Sorrows outfit the Eggy, the New Generation (subsequently to become the Sutherland Brothers), the Dennis Wheatley-inspired Icarus and both sides of the magnificent and astonishingly rare single by Sir Ching I (only one stock copy known to exist).  Also included are exquisite Brit popsike singles from Timothy Blue, Just William, both sides of the superb John Carter/Russ Alquist collaboration ‘The Laughing Man’/‘Midsummer Dreaming’ and two sensational offerings from Eartha Kitt during her brief and unlikely immersion in late Sixties hippy chick chic.

•    Crammed with vintage three-minute pop tunes, and with a lavish 16-page booklet that features rare photos, quotes and the full story behind the label, Hello Everyone is simply an essential purchase for admirers of the British psychedelic pop genre.

The Pied Piper - The Complete Recordings 1965-1974
•    Crispian St. Peters was a folk/pop singer-songwriter who enjoyed significant success in the mid-60s, his career fuelled by some infamous boasts about his musical talents (his claim that he was better than Elvis and The Beatles caused an outrage at the time).

•    Signing to Decca in 1965, Crispian broke through with the UK No. 2 hit ‘You Were On My Mind’ in 1966 (it also made the Top 40 Stateside), followed by perhaps his most famous song, ‘The Pied Piper’, which was Top 5 on both sides of the Atlantic. He also had a minor UK/US hit with ‘Changes’.

•    The Pied Piper does exactly what it says on the package: for the first time, this remastered 2-CD set offers Crispian’s complete recorded output for various labels across nigh on a decade, starting with early singles ‘At This Moment’ and ‘No, No, No’ and ending with a one-off single for Santa Ponsa.

•    Both of Crispian’s albums are represented in their entirety: his 1966 Decca album Follow Me… (issued in similar form on Jamie in the US as The Pied Piper); and his scarce 1970 album for the obscure Square label, Simply Crispian St. Peters.

•    Several recordings on this authoritative 51-track package make their debut on CD. Also included are his single under the pseudonym Country Smith, and several tracks boasting sessioneers Jimmy Page and Big Jim Sullivan on guitar.

•    The Pied Piper offers Crispian St. Peters’s entire recordings from 1965-1974 in one place, remastered with detailed sleeve-notes in the accompanying booklet. Sadly, Crispian passed away in 2010 but this new package offers a fitting epitaph to his musical legacy.
