To Forget An Actor - Tranquilizers

To Forget An Actor
Brought together by song-writer and guitarist Jed Dmochowski (The VIP's, The Blue Aeroplanes, Dan Treacy's Whaam Records) they started recording 'To Forget An Actor' three years ago on the state of the art self-made equipment of recording engineer percussionist/bass/guitar/string composer and arranger Ben Hooper.

The songs are intelligently crafted, each with its own spirit, thought and mojo. The searing beauty of Norwegian Marit-Tingtsad-Husby Loveland's vocal in the opening track 'All I Needed' is complimented by avant-garde Austrian dancer Cornelia Voglmayr's sensual delivery of the final epic 'Like A Star'.

Ten tracks in all, four with a live-recorded string quartet, all performed with integrity and panache. And a beautiful 12" vinyl gatefold  sleeve...

Burt Bacharach: Make it Easy on Yourself 1962
·       Third in El's series of Burt Bacharach composer anthologies following The First Book of Songs 1954-58 (ACMEM166CD) and Long Ago Last Summer 1959-61 (ACMEM233CD)

·       All of these recordings were released in 1962, a time in which Bacharach was at last - after years of unhappy compromise - beginning to be able to exert some control over the arranging and recording and finished presentation of his compositions

·       The advantages of Bacharach's personal supervision was evidenced by such memorable hits as Jerry Butler's 'Make It Easy on Yourself' which reached number 20 on the Billboard Top100, Chuck Jackson's ‘Any Day Now’, and the first recording of the beautiful ‘I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself’ performed by former Flamingos vocalist Tommy Hunt. ‘Love of A Boy’ by Timi Yuro, The Shirelles, ‘It's Love That Really Counts (In The Long Run)’ and ‘Forgive Me (For Giving You Such a Bad Time)’ by Babs Tino, were other Burt Bacharach - Hal David compositions that charted that year.

·       Beside the hits, our edition also contains a number of Bacharach rarities; the only known recording of Marlene Dietrich performing a Bacharach song, ‘Kleine Treue Nachtigall’ (Small True Nightingale), soon to be more widely known as ‘Message to Michael’; a French version of ‘Too Late to Worry’ (Donne-Moi Ma Chance), sung by Sophia Loren, and the Drifters' ‘Mexican Divorce’, a classy but obscure flip-side session, where, among the backing singers, Bacharach encountered for the first time a certain Dionne Warrick (Warwick).

·       1962 found the duo that would revolutionise popular songwriting, establishing their style and getting into their stride. Within months they would commit to working together exclusively...

Sound Of The Koto: The Music of Japan
·       During his lifetime, Kimio Eto was considered to be Japan's foremost master of the koto, the ancient 13-string instrument of his native land. He, like so many, was attracted to the koto by both its beautiful tonal qualities and remarkable versatility.

·       In his youth, Eto studied the koto under the great master Michio Miyagi with his first composition for the instrument, Omoide, being published at just seventeen years. Eto would prove to be a prolific composer and a musician of both feeling and unparallelled technical excellence. His virtuosity being all the more remarkable when it is realised that he was totally blind from the age of five.

·       The fine art developed through the ages in Japan has long been appreciated in the West. The style of a previously strange and mysterious culture is being increasingly integrated; literature, music, film, painting, architecture, manufacturing and food. But above all, the basic culture of Japan has remained, and one still finds the simplicity and awareness that has always been there: an insight born out of extreme sensitivity.

·       Koto music is part of Japan's ancient heritage and was first heard as court music. The composers of today are creating a new form of art with this classical music as a foundation.

·       Some of the truly outstanding performances of Kimio Eto have been gathered together to create this edition including a handful of extraordinarily lovely duets with the American jazz flautist Bud Shank.

Christmas In The Congo
In forming and guiding the Troubadours du Roi Baudouin, Father Guido Haazen chose to add a new and marvelous chapter to the long history of African influence in music. The curiously irreverent jazz that was played at the New Orleans funerals is indebted to this influence; the poignant spirituals of the plantations recall their melancholy roots; the sambas and the marchas composed for the Mardi Gras Carnivals in Rio de Janeiro pulsate with similar rhythms; and today's gospel music strongly reflects its African source.

The musical richness of the environment was immediately apparent to Father Haazen upon arriving in the Congo in 1953. Soon he had assembled forty-five boys, from the ages of nine to fourteen and fifteen teachers, into a choir (with a percussion section added) that has since gained world renown as the Troubadours du Roi Baudouin.

Christmas In the Congo is a sequel to El's best-selling Missa Luba – a mass sung in pure Congolese style by Les Troubadours du Roi Baudouin (ACMEM136CD), a recording that includes their famous Sanctus, the choral theme that was Malcolm McDowell's personal selection which featured to such magical effect in Lindsay Anderson's surrealistic, uncompromising and confrontational 1968 film masterpiece If....

In some countries today, the spirit of Christmas lasts only as long as the season. But from the first song of the Congolese Choir, there is no doubt that their permeating passion is a permanent state of being. In other countries, the dominating mood today is restraint. The Troubadours do not forget that Christmas is a celebration and these songs fully restore the original joyfulness.

This edition also features Folk Tales of the Tribes of Africa as told by the inimitable Eartha Kitt, once described by Orson Welles as "the most exciting woman in the world”. Eartha reads folk tales from southern and central Africa; from the tribes of the Ashanti, the Masai, the Hottentots, from the Efik-Ibibio, Baila, Bavenda and Bakongo. Myths without sentimentality that often reflect the harshness of the environment, a sometimes savage world where one cannot assume the hero will triumph or that wrongs will always be righted.
