A Strange Affair - The Sixties Recordings - John's Children

A Strange Affair - The Sixties Recordings
John’s Children were the quintessential cult 60s Mod/Psych band, controversial, sharply dressed and subsequently the stuff of legend.

The band were fronted by Andy Ellison (later with Jet and Radio Stars) and boasted Marc Bolan within their ranks during their short life.

A STRANGE AFFAIR – for the first time – boasts the entire John’s Children output between 1966 and 1970.

The package includes: * Two singles for EMI’s Columbia label: ‘The Love I Thought I’d Found’ and ‘Just What You Want – Just What You Get’. * Four singles for The Who’s label Track Records: ‘Desdemona’, the legendarily withdrawn ‘Midsummer Night's Scene’, ‘Come And Play With Me In The Garden’ and ‘Go-Go Girl’. * Their mock-live album Orgasm! which was belatedly issued on US label White Whale in 1970. * Andy Ellison’s subsequent solo singles ‘It's Been A Long Time’ (Track), ‘Fool From Upper Eden’ (CBS) and ‘You Can't Do That’ (SNB). * Three tracks by pre-John’s Children band The Silence. * A raft of rare and previously unissued alternative versions and mixes.

The 2-CD set has been compiled with help from Andy Ellison. Their manager Simon Napier-Bell will also be contributing to the detailed sleeve-notes, which are based around excerpts from Ellison’s yet-to-be-published autobiography.

Return To Paradise: A History Of Exotica

Released on 20/09/10. Strange, Sultry and Seductive...fierce, fascinating and feverish - here are sounds to quicken the heart-beat; the tropical fantasy of a hidden world. A woman¹s voice calls, hypnotic and compelling; drums repeat the haunting command and the music weaves a spell of mystery.

From the early fifties, with the onset of international air travel, Exotica became a massively popular musical trend; making it possible for middleclass Americans to simulate an authentic travelogue experience - to India, Africa, Cuba, or the South Seas - in the comfort of their suburban homes.

This public looked to Les Baxter, Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman, Yma Sumac, Korla Pandit or Robert Drasnin to provide (in contrast to the prevailing rock and roll scene) a mystical combination of Oriental, African and Latin sounds, decorated with natural effects gathered from the sea, sky and forest.

Exotic music was originally conceived with Ravel's Bolero and Debussy¹s Pagodes. It left the classical world and entered pop through Les Baxter. In 1950 he created Voice of the Xtabay with four octave Peruvian singer Yma Sumac and a year later released the seminal work of exotica, his tone poem Ritual of the Savage (Le Sacre Du Sauvage).

The North Wind Blew South
Released on 14/02/10. One of the most mysterious albums of the late Sixties, British singer/songwriter Philamore Lincoln's US-only release The North Wind Blew South including his original version of Temma Harbour, a song that became a Top Ten hit for Mary Hopkin - has attracted plenty of conjecture over the years, much of it concerning the alleged involvement of the Yardbirds (Chris Dreja took the album photo, while Jimmy Page contributed a fierce lead guitar break to one of the standout tracks, You're The One ).

This first-ever official reissue of a much-counterfeited set finally sets the record straight about the elusive Mr. Lincoln and his highly convoluted musical history, which included previous pseudonymous stints as jazz drummer Phil Kinorra and blue-eyed soulster Julien Covey (whose A Little Bit Hurt single had been highly popular in Swinging London discotheques).

Gonks Go Beat / I’ve Got A Horse
Released 23rd February 2009. The times may a been a
changin’ as Dylan went electric, but not in British cinemas in 1965
when these B Picture movies were released by Anglo Amalgamated. With no
forward looking aspect to them they remain delightful time capsules from
a world when entertainment alone was the goal. Entirely ignoring
popular culture’s seismic movements at the time these films aimed at the
mass audience who were deemed to delight in frippery. At the same
time I Gotta Horse and Gonks Go Beat each generated exceptionally rare
soundtrack albums that are impossible to find today, and have never
before been reissued, which showcase some interesting artists and
combinations. For example exclusive tracks by Lulu, Graham Bond and a
terrific drum battle between Bobby Graham (also aka The Titan Studio
Orchestra.) /Alan White/Ronnie Verral/Ginger Baker on Gonks Go Beat,
with the specially penned Billy Fury material here placed in their
proper context.

A Single Girl : The Very Best of the MGM Years
Sandy Posey, brought up in the music rich area of
Memphis, was a backing singer for the Nashville Studios. Singers she
backed on record included Elvis Presley, Tommy Roe, Bobby Bare, Joe Tex,
Percy Sledge and Skeeter Davis, and later in spite of her own success
she continued to contribute her voice as part of the famous Nashville
Sound background. Nashville publisher Gary Walker and writer producer
Chips Moman wondered how she would sound solo so brought her into the
studio in 1966 to record as the main artist. She scored five Top 40
single hits and released four albums all on the MGM label between 1966 -
1968. We present the very best of these recordings, nearly all produced
by Chips Moman.Great melodic and rhythmic 60's pop, reminiscent
of the girl-talk records of the early 60's, innocent and submissive,
with splashes of Posey's country music background which at the time
brought her widespread radio and jukebox play. Although many of the
songs were written by others Posey's strength was her song styling. Packaging
includes an essay written by Record Collector editor Peter Doggett,
based around his recent interview with Sandy Posey. This package will
find many takers among 60's pop fans as there have been very few
collections of Posey's recordings down the years. Added to which is the
cross over appeal to country fans.

Mojo Rhythms & Midnight Blues - Volume 1: Sessions 1965-1968
Released 04/07/11. The Spencer Davis Group will be
well known to you through their classic R&B singles which are still
club and radio favourites, thanks to great riffs, thumping production
and mature vocals. This album collects together many of the
same songs that the Group released on their singles and albums but here
recorded in live sessions for radio broadcast. They provide a
fascinating contrast in performance and you get proof of just how good a
Group they were at successfully interpreting American R&B, and also
what a tight musical unit they were and how well their original numbers
stood up when performed live.
