Something Special (Expanded Edition) - Kool & The Gang

Something Special (Expanded Edition)
KOOL & THE GANG need no introduction. They were the top selling Soul group of the 70’s and 80’s having sold over 70 million albums worldwide and have received countless awards. Without them we would not have such great hits as ‘Summer Madness,’ ‘Get Down On It,’ ‘Celebration’ and who could forget that slammin’ funk monster that features so heavily in Quentin Tarantino’s cult flick - Pulp Fiction; ‘Jungle Boogie.’

1981 brought with it the release of SOMETHING SPECIAL, Kool & The Gang’s 15th studio album, in the same year they would win Favourite Band, Duo or Group in the Soul/Rhythm & Blues category at the American Music Awards and would once again feature Grammy Award winner, Eumir Deodato’s special touch on production duties.

SOMETHING SPECIAL rose to #1 on Billboard’s Top Soul Albums and a top 20 position in the Billboard album chart along with reaching #10 in the U.K. becoming the bands most successful U.K. album to date spending 20 weeks in the charts as well as going Platinum in the U.S. and Gold in the U.K. in December of 1981 and April 1982, respectively.

Singles featured on SOMETHING SPECIAL include ‘Take My Heart (You Can Have It If You Want It)’ which shot to the top of the U.S. R&B chart while gaining top 20 spots on both the U.S. Pop and Dance charts while later achieving a top 30 position in the U.K. ‘Get Down On It’ followed and did even better landing at #10 U.S. Pop, #4 in the R&B charts and better still in the U.K. attaining a #3 position. Beyond that ‘Get Down On It’ has gone on to become one of the band’s most instantly recognizable hits. Kool & The Gang’s chart success didn’t stop there; ‘Steppin’ Out’ also went on to chart, landing an impressive #12 spot on both the U.S. R&B chart and U.K. singles chart.

BBR is proud to present SOMETHING SPECIAL This fully expanded and newly re-mastered edition comes complete with extended liner notes, including new interviews, and added bonus material.

The Circle And The Square
Released 20/10/08. The Circle And The Square was originally released in 1986 and has become one of the most requested reissues, even with an online petition launched to see it released. 2nd hand copies exchange hands for approximately £200.

This reissue features four of the band's best known singles including their two top 10 hits ‘Lean On Me' number 3 in '85 and ‘For America' number 10 in '86.The CD booklet features a UK discography and various sleeve notes including a written contribution by lead vocalist Simon Toulson-Clarke. The CD includes 6 bonus tracks, the band's original Cherry Red single ‘Chenko/Valley' and all of the b/sides from the singles listed above. The b/sides are appearing on CD for the first time. Red Box came to the attention of the world with their debut single "Chenko" on Cherry Red Records in 1983.

The band soon signed to WEA Records and the band hit the upper reaches of the charts with their 2nd single ‘Lean On Me'. The band enjoyed further single chart success and released two albums, 'The Circle & The Square' and 'Motive'. Red Box should've enjoyed lasting success but the band's output stopped there until the re-recorded version of ‘Lean On Me' was made available through iTunes by the band in 2007. The band's influence is still evident today with many fan websites created to celebrate the band's music.

Open Sesame- Expanded Edition

Kool And The Gang needs no introduction. They were the top selling Soul group of the 80s and have sold over 70 million albums world wide and have received countless awards. Without them we would not have such great hits as Summer Madness, Get Down On It, Celebration and who could forget that slammin funk monster that featured so heavily in Quentin Tarantino's cult flick - Pulp Ficton; Jungle Boogie. Kool & The Gang was started by two brothers, Robert Kool Bell and Ronald Bell along with five friends in 1964. After some time playing the growing Jersey City Jazz coffeehouse scene and spots like Café Wha? in New York City, performing alongside other yet-to-be famous talents of the time, Kool & The Gang were signed to Redd Coach Records in 1968 and a year later were recording for the small subsidiary label, De-Lite Records. The 1970s was a busy and fruitful decade for the group, with Kool & The Gang, releasing twelve studio albums, two live albums and appearing on numerous occasions across the charts. 1976 saw Ricky Westfield leave the group to form his own band, North East South West, and would also mark the end of collaborations between the original seven members of KOOL & THE GANG. Later that year the group released Open Sesame which features the up-tempo single Superband which gained a top 20 R&B chart spot and the title track which reached #6 R&B and #55 on the US pop charts and soared to #13 on the Dance chart and was later featured in the soundtrack for Saturday Night Fever.

Love Conquers All- Expanded Edition
Released on 29/08/11. Before embarking on a solo career in the 1980s, Californian R&B singer Michael Wycoff was best known for singing backup on Stevie Wonder’s 1976 album Songs In The Key Of Life and working with artists including Natalie Cole. Love Conquers All was Wycoff’s second album, containing the hit R&B single Looking Up To You and the underground dance classic Diamond Real. Wycoff released three albums in the 1980s before falling on hard times and ultimately rebuilding his life through the church. Wycoff might have become just one more forgotten artist, but after Zhane sampled Looking UP To You on their 1994 Top Ten US Pop hit HEY MR. D.J. fans rediscovered Love Conquers All, which remains a highly sought-after underground classic to this day. BBR is very proud to present Love Conquers All in full and expanded form, complete with extensive liner notes that feature interviews along with added bonus tracks.

Strange Kind Of Love
Formed in 1985 by James Grant and Paul McGeechan, both formerly of Scottish cult indie guitar band Friends Again , they joined forces with bassist Bobby Paterson and drummer Stuart Kerr to become Love and Money. They took on a more rock and soulful approach to music.Signing to Phonogram, they recorded their debut album Love And Money with production by Tom Dowd. This album gained an immediate following and set up the momentum for their follow up album. The band spent most of 1987 demoing this, their follow up album Strange Kind of Love . This was overseen by Steely Dan producer Gary Katz and following Kerr's departure, Toto's Jeff Porcaro standing in on drums. Receiving mass critical acclaim the album took them to a new level of success on both sides of the ocean with the album going platinum in the UK.The band went on to record two further albums and cult success before calling it a day in 1994. James Grant has since released a number of acclaimed solo albums, with his current album Strange Flowers being hismost upbeat album since Strange Kind of Love. This long overdue reissue adds 6 previously unreleased 1987 demos from the bands own archive with sleeve notes written by producer Gary Katz and recollections from James Grant and Paul McGeechan.
