INDESTRUCTIBLE - The Four Tops

INDESTRUCTIBLE

In 1988, The Four Tops left Motown (the company for whom they recorded enduring classics such as ‘Reach Out I’ll Be There’ and ‘I Can’t Help Myself’)  after a third stint to make one album,  for Arista Records

With Arista founder Clive Davis helming the project as executive producer, the original members of the legendary quartet (Duke Fakir, Lawrence Payton, Levi Stubbs and Obie Benson) worked with several producers –Narada Michael Walden (fresh from success with Arista artists Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin); Steve Barri (who had produced the group at ABC/Dunhill Records) and Bobby Sandstrom; their former Motown colleague Lamont Dozier working with superstar Phil Collins; pop and rock star Huey Lewis; the team of Jerry Knight & Aaron Zigman (who had worked with The Jets and The Pointer Sisters among others); and singer/songwriter Albert Hammond.

The album enjoyed its’ greatest success in Europe: in the UK, "Loco In Acapulco” (co-written by Phil Collins for the film, "Buster” in which he starred in the lead role) reached the Top 10;  while the infectious title track  – with a vocal cameo from Motown pal Smokey Robinson - also became a Top 30 UK hit and Top 100 US pop and Top 40 R&B charted single. Other standouts include a US-charted duet with fellow Detroit friend Aretha Franklin on ‘If There  A Love There Was’ (also featuring Arista’s Kenny G on sax) and ‘The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine’ (with a sax solo from Clarence Clemons).

This SoulMusic Records’ expanded edition reissue includes six bonus tracks including the UK single of ‘Loco In Acapulco’ and three remixes of the track, an extended version of ‘Indestructible’ and a non-album ‘B’ side ‘The Four Of Us,’ written by group member Lawrence Payton as well as liner notes by renowned UK writer Charles Waring including quotes from producer Narada Michael Walden.

Stray Dog - Expanded Edition
Released 26/10/09. The 1973 debut from a band who became cult figures on the blues-rock scene, mainly because there was a real crunch to the music. This release (along with While You re Down There by Stray Dog) is the first to be issued on the reactivated Manticore label, under an exclusive license to Cherry Red Records and managed by the people who brought you Esoteric Recordings and Atomhenge. The First Chapter - Live
The Mission, (or Mission UK as they are known in the USA ) formed in 1986 from the ashes of recently dissolved band Sisters of Mercy. They have crafted their own brand atmospheric Gothic Rock ever since. The line-up has changed many a time as the band has been resurrected through the years but the enigmatic lead singer Wayne Hussey has always remained constant. A virtuoso guitar player (though not playing lead guitar for The Mission preferring to focus his talent on vocals). On Wednesday 27th of February 2008, The Mission took to the stage to perform a memorable and momentous gig, performing The First Chapter live in it’s entirety. The First Chapter was originally released 1987 and includes the singles, Serpents Kiss and Garden of Delights. It is no small feat to play an album in its absoluteness, and The Mission perform the task with splendour putting to bed the naysayer’s of their undeniable talent and importance. Our Price: £9.95

Born To Love
When Peabo Bryson and Roberta Flack teamed up in 1983 to record the Capitol album BORN TO LOVE, the pair had already experienced success as a duo thanks to the 1980 LP, Live & More (a Top 10 R&B best-selling album). By the time they headed into the studio to cut BORN TO LOVE, Bryson was six years into his recording career and had established himself as one of the premier black male vocalists of the day; Flack was already considered an internationally-renowned artist thanks to classic recordings such as ‘The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’ and ‘Killing Me Softly With His Song.’
With tracks produced by songwriters Michael Masser, Bob Crewe and Bryson himself, BORN TO LOVE achieved gold status in the US as well as becoming both artists’ highest-charting international success. The impact of the now-classic single, ‘Tonight, I Celebrate My Love’ (co-written by Masser, then known for songs such as Diana Ross’ ‘Touch Me In The Morning’ and Natalie Cole’s ‘Someone That I Used To Love’ and Gerry Goffin) was global, reaching No. 2 on the UK charts, No. 10 in Australia, No. 4 in Canada and No. 16 in the US).
The album also included two other charted singles, ‘Maybe’ and ‘You’re Looking Like Love To Me’ while ‘Heaven Above Me’ got radio and club play in the UK.
This 2013 expanded edition of BORN TO LOVE includes three bonus tracks along with liner notes by Billboard Senior Editor, Gail Mitchell with new quotes from Roberta Flack.

Just For You/All Night Music
· Originally from Youngstown, Ohio, the brother-and-sister group The McCrarys began their career in the gospel field recording their first LP in 1972. However, it was a move into secular music in 1978 that brought the team national prominence in the US when their debut album for Portrait Records, "Loving Is Living” achieved success, in part due to the Top 10 R&B hit, ‘You’ which featured one of their champions, Stevie Wonder. After their label follow-up LP, "On The Other Side,” the group signed a new deal with Capitol Records in 1980.
· Consisting of sisters Charity and Linda and brothers Alfred, Howard and Sam, The McCrarys worked with producer/musician Patrick Henderson (whose roots were also in the gospel field). With seven tracks credited to various members of the group as songwriters, JUST FOR YOU included the key cut, ‘Any Ol’ Sunday’ which was recorded by Chaka Khan in 1981.
· Teamed with former member of The Crusaders, Wayne Henderson (producer of Ronnie Laws, Esther Phillips, Side Effect and Pleasure among others), the group’s second Capitol LP, ALL NIGHT MUSIC fared better. The track, ‘Love On A Summer Night’ became a Top 100 US R&B hit single and a constant favourite – and now classic - in the UK with ‘smooth groove’fans.
· Apart from a limited Japanese pressing of "All Night Music”, both albums are making their worldwide CD debut with this SoulMusic Records reissue, which includes notes by renowned UK writer Charles Waring with 2013 quotes from members of the group.

Billy Preston & Syreeta
  • Continuing to reissue classic original albums from the Motown catalogue, SoulMusic Records is very proud to present the worldwide CD debut of the self-titled 1981 album by BILLY PRESTON and SYREETA, an expanded edition with seven bonus tracks.
  • Billy Preston (through mid’-70s hits such as ‘Will It Go Round In Circles’ and ‘Nothing From Nothing’) and Syreeta (former wife of Stevie Wonder with four critically-acclaimed albums to her credit) were established as recording artists in their own right when, as Motown label-mates, they worked together on the 1979 soundtrack for the film, "Fast Break.” While the film itself made no impact, one track from the album, the beautiful ballad ‘With You I’m Born Again’ (included as a bonus track on this reissue along with an instrumental version of the song) became a Top 5 UK hit prompting Motown to release the single in the US where it reached No. 4 on Billboard’s Top 100 chart.
  • Encouraged by the single’s success, Syreeta’s 1980 self-titled LP (reissued by SoulMusic Records in 2013, SMCR-5094) featured two more duets with Billy, ‘One More Time For Love’ and ‘Please Stay,’ both included as bonus tracks on this release along with a non-album ‘B’ side ‘It Will Come In Time.’ The pair recorded BILLY PRESTON & SYREETA in 1981 working with producers including David Shire & Carol Connors, Ollie E. Brown and Michael Masser.
  • Bonus tracks include two versions of ‘Go For It’ (from "Fast Break”) and the reissue includes notes by UK Motown expert Sharon Davis with 2013 quotes from producer/songwriter Carol Connors.
