Holidaydream - Sounds Of The Holidays - The Polyphonic Spree

Holidaydream - Sounds Of The Holidays

HOLIDAYDREAM – SOUNDS OF THE HOLIDAYS – the first ever Christmas themed collection of songs from The Polyphonic Spree – finally gets a full European release in this special edition package.

Holidaydream – Sounds Of The Holidays is quite simply a collection of the band’s favourite Christmas songs, given the Polyphonic Spree treatment. Such seasonal classics as ‘Winter Wonderland’, ‘Silent Night’, and ‘White Christmas’, are wonderfully embellished with the trademark Polyphonic sounds - heavy doses of strings, woodwinds, and lush choral arrangements.

This special edition of the album contains two previously unreleased bonus tracks – ‘It’s Christmas’ and ‘Silver Bells (Malachai Remix)’.

Also included in this special version release is a bonus DVD disc containing a full live show from the band recorded in August 2013 in London. In front of a exuberant crowd the band run through many of their hits along with tracks from their 2013 album release ‘Yes, It’s True’.

Yes, It's True
'Yes, It’s True’. The Polyphonic Spree return to the UK with a new album and tour dates this summer. The band who captured the imagination of thousands from their first notes at David Bowie’s Meltdown in 2002 and went on to take hearts and minds at Glastonbury and on a succession of UK tours have been away from our ears and eyes for some time but have remained a touchstone for all that is innovative, beautiful and downright different in the music scene.

The first album from the band in five years, excluding 2012’s ‘HolidayDream : Sounds Of The Holidays’ compilation of Tim and Julie’s favourite Christmas songs, follows Tim’s diversion into recording with former Tripping Daisy bandmate and ex Secret Machines man Philip E Karnats as Preteen Zenith alongside a revamp for his Good Records Recordings label. If, at first sight, The Polyphonic Spree were defined by their robes and the sheer size of their travelling carnival, now, over a decade since the release of that debut album, ‘The Beginning Stages Of’, with a host of tv appearances, three studio albums and countless festival and touring performances under their belt, The Polyphonic Spree have made the journey from interesting oddballs to globally respected and renowned musicians and composers. Few contemporary acts can point to having such impact on the musical world as The Polyphonic Spree, whether the patronage of Bowie or the ability to tackle a new version of the ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’ to glowing reviews in both the UK and the USA.‘Yes, It’s True’ continues the Spree’s musical journey; still focused on the melodies that always set them apart but developed with the use of rhythm programming and additional instrumentation to create an album that flourishes eleven tracks to the listener as though this writing pop songs thing was nothing more than an impulse.

Produced by the band’s Tim DeLaughter and Julie Doyle under their guise as ‘The Speekers’ with Eric Drew Feldman (Captain Beefheart, PJ Harvey) and additional production and mix from Tim Palmer (U2, Pearl Jam), ‘Yes, It’s True’ is released on the band’s own Good Records Recordings via Cherry Red on 5th August. A single from the album, ‘You Don’t Know Me’, will be released on July 29The Polyphonic Spree return to the UK for two festivals shows as follows..

4th AUGUST 2013 - CAMP BESTIVAL, DORSET
6TH AUGUST 2013 - ALBUM LAUNCH GIG AT VILLAGE UNDERGROUND, LONDON
7th SEPTEMBER 2013 -BESTIVAL, THE ISLE OF WIGHT

Playboy Themes
•    Enrico Nicola Mancini. Orchestral craftsman. Melodic genius. Seventy-two Grammy Nominations, twenty wins...eighteen Oscar nominations, four wins... two Emmys, a Golden Globe, a Grammy Lifetime award.

•    Although he was hired as a pianist and arranger for Glenn Miller's post-war band and was a busy in-house arranger for Universal films from the early fifties (contributing to or completing an estimated 100 scores), it was 1958 before Mancini really exploded onto the scene with his searing Afro-Cuban style score for Orson Welles' film noir Touch of Evil, the director's still underrated masterpiece of murder, kidnapping, and police corruption in a Mexican border town, and also with the irresistible chart-topping swinger-jazz he composed for NBC's crime-battling Peter Gunn, a nationwide TV hit created by Blake Edwards, the film director, screenwriter, producer and former Universal editor with whom 'Hank' was to enjoy a long and fruitful association.

•    Playboy Themes is an anthology of Mancini's trailblazing output from the 1958 landmarks to the end of 1962, taking in music from both "Gunn" and its sequel Mr. Lucky with which Mancini and Edwards revolutionised the whole concept of television music, and a raft of successful early film collaborations between the two men; Breakfast At Tiffany's (starring Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard), High Time (Bing Crosby and Tuesday Weld), Experiment In Terror (Lee Remick and Glenn Ford) and in a nice change of pace for Mancini, a dramatic picture, The Days of Wine and Roses (Lee Remick and Jack Lemmon) which, like Tiffany's and Moon River was boosted by a themesong co-composed by Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer.

•    In addition to Touch of Evil (Charlton Heston and Janet Leigh), Mancini themes from some other, non-Blake Edwards pictures are also featured, including from Howard Hawks' Hatari! (John Wayne and Elsa Martinelli), Robert Mulligan's The Great Impostor (Tony Curtis and Karl Malden) and Jack Arnold's Bachelor In Paradise (Bob Hope and Lana Turner)

Latin-esque / Exploring New Sounds In Hi-Fi
•    "Music for me is like colours. I mix yellow with blue, or perhaps red. This is how I find my sounds, quite natural really. To get magenta you have to modify the sound of the trumpet. I think Van Gogh has heavily influenced me."

•    "The early years of stereo were not easy. I needed more equipment, and yet I had to make do."

•    The Mexican bandleader and arranger Juan Garcia Esquivel was the quintessential Space-Age pop musician; the embodiment of late-fifties, early 1960s modernity.

•    Latin-esque and Exploring New Sounds in Hi-Fi are supreme examples of Esquivel in all his thrilling pomp; the King of Stereo Action, the playful Svengali who invented the "zu-zu-zu" vocal punctuation, the pioneer craftsman intent on scouring the sonic universe for every creative possibility.

•    Esquivel was obsessed with space and on Latin-esque he made history by simultaneously recording parts of his orchestra in two separate Hollywood studios, a block apart in order to obtain an exaggerated spatial image. As David Toop observed in his book 'Exotica: fabricated soundscapes in a real world', 'Grand pianos drift from one side of the room to the other. They are bookended by two relentlessly bright though forever divided worlds of Hawaiian steel guitars, accordions, happy brass, trilling xylophones, rattling snare drums, claves, vocal choruses, boobams, electronic keyboards and every inane possibility of the orchestrator's art. Unlike most recordings there is no attempt to cement the right and left loudspeaker channels into a cohesive whole; for Esquivel, the space between loudspeakers was an empty vessel through which normally immovable instruments roamed, sometimes hovering in the air or darting back and forth like hummingbirds.

•    Crude as the sound magic is, the illusionism has parallels both with the kinetic painting and sculpture of Bridget Riley and Pol Bury or with the surreal imagistic dislocations of Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte.'

NB: This title is released on October 20, 2014 and will not be dispatched until this date.
