The Dawn of Psychedelia - Various Artists

The Dawn of Psychedelia
Piper At the Gates of Dawn, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Doors, Electric Music for the Mind and Body, The United States of America, Fifth Dimension, Happy Trails, Forever Changes, S F Sorrow, Ogden's Nut Gone Flake, A Child's Guide to Good and Evil, Music In A Doll's House, Mass in F Minor, We're Only In It For The Money: just some of the conceptual masterpieces of the psychedelic era.

But these monuments to the Aquarian Age didn't suddenly materialise. What of the earlier musical influences that inspired them, what of the art that cleared a path for psychedelia?

The Dawn of Psychedelia charts the course of the artistic momentum that had been gathering internationally from the mid nineteenth century. From Dante Gabriel Rossetti and the Pre-Raphaelites to Lewis Carroll, progressing through Art nouveau. Aubrey Beardsley, Erik Satie and The Sitwells. Dada, Marcel Duchamp. The Surrealists: Dali and Bunuel and Miro. Edgard Varèse, the "Father of Electronic Music", the "Matinee Idol of Modernism" and musical guru of Frank Zappa. Aldous Huxley's 'holiday from reality' and the yearning of he and such prophets (or charlatans?) as Timothy Leary to attain the cosmic conciousness of unity, light and love. Abstract Expressionism, Jackson Pollock and the sculptor Alaxander Calder. The Alice B Toklas Cook Book. The mysteries of Indian classical music and its introduction in the west (Ravi Shankar, Vilayat Khan, Ali Akbar Khan and his brilliant disciple, Sharan Rani). The pioneering of Sun Ra and the jazz hybrids created by such figures as Ken Nordine, Yusef Lateef, Herbie Mann and Gabor Szabo as each sought to break the boundaries of convention. The bewitching, other-worldly music of Sanctus from the Missa Luba, a version of the Latin Mass based on traditional Congolese songs, which establishes the magical atmosphere of Lindsay Anderson's If... a film that is a microcosm of the revolutionary 1960s and one of the most important films in cinema history.

The culmination of these pure, unadulterated divergent strands created the environment in which psychedelia would so memorably flower.

Duffy
60's blues fusion musician, writer and singer Duffy Power finally achieved a stand alone LP release in 1973 when an eponymous album hit the racks on the GSF label.

Produced by Adrian Millar, as one of several on going projects in a Production deal set up with partner Andrew Loog Oldham, the Duffy Power LP became to date the only purpose recorded album Duffy has had released in his career.

For this fine collection of Duffy originals Millar brought in a stellar cast of musicians, plus backing singers Dana Gillespie, Pam McKenna, Alexis Korner, and Del Newman for string arrangements, to help bring the songs to life.

The album was well received and Millar continued to be a fan of Duffy's songs, offering a second LP. Sessions were begun with a regular backing band called CWT ( see also the RATS (RPM 322) where they backed singer / songwriter David Kubinec). Sadly only three tracks survive today as yet again another Duffy album project remained on the shelf.

As a follow up to the two successful Anthologies of Duffy's 60's recordings RPM is proud to make available again for the first time in 30 years, and for the first time on CD, the 1973 LP Duffy Power, plus the three recordings from the aborted follow up album. The package includes very personal song by song annotation from Duffy, and more unseen photos from Duffy's archive.

Logg
LOGG was a high profile project on Salsoul Records fronted by the prolific and inventive singer/songwriter/keyboardist and producer Leroy Burgess. The majority of Burgess’s output is on rare 12” singles and out of print albums and are highly sought after by crate diggers across the world.
Produced by both Burgess and Salsoul stalwart Greg Carmichael LOGG is a very high calibre album from the disco period which Burgess used as a showcase for his own wide ranging talents and that of his solid rhythm section James Calloway (bass) and Sonny Davenport (drums). All three players co-wrote every track on the LP.
As LOGG was one of Larry Levan’s favourite projects the irrepressible Paradise Garage DJ supported Burgess by spinning several Logg tracks in his club sets helping to guarantee a legendary status for the project.
‘I Know You Will’, the first single from LOGG (R&B #80), and the follow up ‘(You’ve Got) That Something’, along with ‘Dancing Into The Stars’, ‘Something Else’ and ‘Sweet To Me’ all became instant dance floor classics thanks to the support of Larry Levan and still delight dance floors across the globe today. This edition also features the ultimate Burgess classics ‘Heartbreaker’ and ‘Stranger’.
BBR is very proud to present LOGG, expertly re-mastered and complete with extensive liner notes and bonus tracks. LOGG is absolutely essential listening for all Soul, Funk, Disco and Dance fans out there!

Discotheque
HERBIE MANN (born Herbert Jay Solomon) was one of Jazz music’s most prolific performers and innovators excelling predominantly on flute, but also tenor saxophone, clarinet and bass clarinet. Throughout the 50’s and 60’s Mann played in many groups exploring the boundaries of Jazz by absorbing Afro-Latin themes and recording and touring throughout the world. During this time he was able to nurture some of the greatest Jazz musicians as his sidemen, most notably Willie Bobo, Chick Corea, Roy Ayers and David Newman.
In the 70’s Mann extended his repertoire further by incorporating rock, pop, reggae and disco into his sound, which included this 1975 offering on Atlantic Records, DISCOTHEQUE. The album boasts a number of great jazzy grooves that show off Mann’s incredible dexterity on the flute and employs his vast experience to its full extent. DISCOTHEQUE was received very well in Jazz, R&B, Pop and Disco markets on its release achieving #5, #19 and #27 on the Billboard Jazz, R&B and Pop album charts respectively.
The albums one and only single was an instrumental cover of ‘Hi-Jack,’ which was originally recorded by Latin influenced Funk group Barrabas in 1974, and again confirmed the wide appeal that Mann enjoyed as it charted at #14 Pop, #24 R&B and an incredible #1 on Billboards Disco Action chart as the track lit up dance floors across the USA. Other notable tracks are the self-penned ‘High Above The Andes,’ showing off Mann’s love of the Latin groove, and a gorgeous rendition of Stevie Wonders ‘Bird Of Beauty.’ This edition also features the non-album B-side ‘Orient Express’ and the original unedited version of ‘Hi-Jack’.
BBR is very proud to bring you DISCOTHEQUE, completely re-mastered and repackaged complete with extensive liner notes and extended bonus content. DISCOTHEQUE is a must have for all (Latin) Jazz, Funk and Dance/Disco fans out there!

Magic
T-Connection, formed in 1975, were a Funk/Disco group who hailed from reportedly one of the funkiest places on the planet, Nassau, in the Bahamas. Looking to further their chances of success the group leader, Theophilus "T” Coakley (vocals, guitar and keyboards) persuaded the other members of the group, his brother Kirkwood Coakley (bass, drums), David Mackey (guitars) and Anthony Flowers (drums, percussion) to take the short flight to Miami, Florida shortly after the birth of the group. Shortly after arriving T-Connection signed with dash Records, an off-shoot of the very successful Miami based T.K. Disco imprint.
In 1977, T-Connection released their second offering on Dash, "Magic”. Magic would kick start a successful run of albums and singles with ‘Do What You Wanna Do’ setting that trend in motion climbing to #1 on the Billboard Disco chart and #15 R&B. Other notable tracks include the single ‘Disco Magic,’ which reached #16 on the US Disco chart and ‘Go Back Home.’
BBR is delighted to bring you this newly remastered and fully expanded edition of T-CONNECTION - MAGIC.
Complete with extensive liner notes and added bonus content this BBR re-master is a must have for all Funk, Soul, Disco and R&B fans out there!
