Intuition - Angela Bofill

Intuition
After a seven-year, seven-album tenure with Arista Records (from 1978-1985) – which started with the release of her GRP album Angie (reissued by SoulMusic Records in 2012, SMCR-5039) - renowned singer / songwriter Angela Bofill took a three-year hiatus from recording, moving to Northern California as a then-newly wed with a new born daughter. In 1988, she was eager to step back into the studio: the result was INTUITION, her sole album for Capitol Records.
The Bronx, New York-born artist worked with two primary producers for the project, musician and recording artist in his own right Norman Connors and Vincent Brantley, fresh from hits with such ’80s hitmakers as New Edition and Klymaxx. Bofill also produced two tracks herself, the self-penned composition ‘Love Overtime’ and ‘Fragile, Handle With Care,’ written by Robbie Nevil and Siedah Garrett.
The sessions with Connors included a remake of the 1978 Gino Vanelli hit ‘I Just Wanna Stop’ which became the album’s key single (reaching No. 11 on the U.S. R&B charts) as well as ‘For You And I,’ a standout ballad duet with Peabo Bryson. Highlights among Brantley’s tracks were ‘Love Is In Your Eyes’ (a personal Bofill favourite) and ‘Everlasting Love.’
This expanded edition of INTUITION (long out of print) includes two bonus track single edits and notes by renowned US writer Darnell Meyers-Johnson with quotes from Angela herself, Vincent Brantley, arranger Benjamin Wright and former Capitol executive Wayne Edwards.

Bitter Sweet
King, led by later disc jockey Paul King, were among the biggest and brightest stars of the vibrant 80s British pop scene. They grew out of the Reluctant Stereotypes, a highly regarded but underachieving Coventry band, with musicians including former Members' drummer Adrian Lilywhite. They settled on a distinctive image - multi-coloured Doc Martens, with King himself resplendent in bright suits and cockatoo hair. They achieved immediate success with the UK number 2 chart hit 'Love And Pride' (included here in remixed form). This, their second album from 1985, which also includes the top ten hit 'Alone Without You', as well as a further hit, 'Torture', and the delicate ballad 'The Taste Of Your Tears'. This was to be their final album before Paul embarked on a solo career. As well as numerous bonus tracks never released before on CD, this package includes exclusive liner notes written by long-serving Coventry journalist Pete Chambers, who has followed the band's career for many years. What Cha Gonna Do With My Lovin'
Stephanie Mills first came to prominence in 1975 with her performance as Dorothy in the stage version of THE WIZ on Broadway. In addition, the album also spawned two massive club hits in the form of PUT YOUR BODY IN IT and YOU CAN GET OVER.WHAT CHA GONNA DO WITH MY LOVIN' also featured Stephanie's reading of PEABO BRYSON's FEEL THE FIRE which to this day is on heavy rotation on the Quiet Storm radio format in the US.

A Life In Music 2CD
Ravi Shankar, who died aged 92, in December 2012, was the musical visionary who thanks to the cultural influences of his family, the advantages of a disciplined classical background and a heady sixties association with George Harrison and The Beatles, established the sitar and the raga into western consciousness. He was thus the first performer and composer to bridge the musical gap between India and the west.
Ravi Shankar is already considered to have been one of the greatest musicians of the twentieth century.
Ravi's first musical ventures were as a child, appearing in his brother Uday's dance company in America and France. In his teens he was apprenticed to the sarod master, Allauddin Khan under who's demanding tutelage he would inherit the great tradition of Indian classical music.
By the time his first met George Harrison and Paul McCartney in 1966, Shankar had given recitals with Khan's son, the sarodist, Ali Akbar Khan, served as musical director of All India Radio's first National Orchestra, and been sent to all points on cultural tours by the Indian government. He had composed elegant film themes for Satyajit Ray's Apu Trilogy, and taught and befriended the jazz musicians John Coltrane and Don Ellis.
Ravi met the Beatles at a point when the Fab Four were looking to expand their musical language and to make deeper artistic statements. Legend has it that they had already been introduced to Ravi's music by Byrds guitarist Roger McGuinn at an LSD party in Los Angeles and indeed they dabbled with the sitar on the 1965 hit, Norwegian Wood. On meeting Ravi Shankar, George Harrison determined to take the instrument seriously, soon journeying to meet Ravi in India for a period of intensive tuition. There by the banks of the Dal Lake in Srinagar, the guitarist was inspired to write Within You Without You for the album, Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Beatles' tribute to Ravi Shankar.
The flower-power generation were beguiled by Ravi. He appeared at the
Monterey and Woodstock Festivals, and at the Concert for Bangledesh in New York in 1971 and made no attempt attempt to conceal his appreciation of the adulation, "Though I had been performing all over the world since 1954, my association with George attracted a whole young generation to sitar and to me from the mid-1960s. Even though I didn't make any record jamming with him or any other pop or rock star, I was treated like a superstar, being the Beatle George's guru.”
The recordings featured here are likely those that turned the The Beatles
on to Ravi. They were made between 1956 and 1962 and for all the success that followed they are arguably the pinnacle of his recorded artistry.

The Buddah Years
Eighteen years after her passing in 1995, soulful songstress Phyllis Hyman remains one of most appreciated and loved singers of her time. SoulMusic Records pays tribute to the distinctive vocalist with a third release following the 2013 reissues of two of her Arista albums, 1979’s SOMEWHERE IN MY LIFETIME (SMCR-5092) and 1983’s GODDESS OF LOVE (SMCR-5095) with a collection that focuses on her recordings for Buddah Records (1977-1978).
Incorporating her self-titled 1977 LP debut (available on CD for the first time in its entirety in many years), THE BUDDAH YEARS also includes the dance-flavoured "You’re The One,” a track left off the original album, and three songs – ‘Soon Come Again,’ ‘Be Careful (How You Treat My Love)’ and ‘The Answer Is You’ - recorded for Buddah, originally released on the 1978 non-US LP, ‘Sing A Song’ and then included on her 1979 US Arista debut.
With production by Jerry Peters, John Davis and the team of Larry Alexander (her then-husband) and Sandy Torano, the "Phyllis Hyman album” showcased the songbird’s ability to fuse pop, soul and jazz. Highlights included a beautiful reinterpretation of "I Don’t Want To Lose You,” (originally recorded by The Spinners), songwriter / producer Thom Bell’s ‘Loving You, Losing You,’ (a Top 40 R&B and dance hit single) and the Hyman fan favourite, ‘The Night Bird Gets The Love.’
Liner notes by renowned U.S. writer Rashod Ollison include quotes from producer John Davis and arranger Onaje Allan Gumbs.

Love Tracks
Grammy Award winner and Hall of Famer, GLORIA GAYNOR was born on the 7th of September 1949 in Newark, N.J. and sang as young girl in her school choir, mixed chorus and the her school’s girl glee club. While she knew she one day wanted to have a career in music, GLORIA GAYNOR still went to school with the aim of having something to fall back on and studied beauty and business courses.
In 1965 GLORIA GAYNOR released her first solo single titled She’ll Be Sorry with the B-Side Let Me Go Baby on Jocida Records. However, it wasn’t until the 1970’s that Gaynor began to taste real success with the release of her first two albums, Experience and Never Can Say Goodbye, (both available on BBR) that she began to stand out as a unique and recognizable force on the black music scene.
In 1978 GLORIA GAYNOR released her 6th studio album, "LOVE TRACKS” on Polydor Records, now fully remastered and repackaged by BBR!
"LOVE TRACKS” features some of the best musicians of the time including Paulinho Da Costa on percussion and Wah Wah Watson on guitar while production duties were left in the capable hands of Dino Fekaris.
"LOVE TRACKS” contains the million-unit selling chart topper, ‘I Will Survive’, originally a B-side to Gloria’s cover of ‘Substitute’. While ‘Substitute’ still obtained chart success it was ‘I Will Survive’, which quickly gained traction in the clubs, and as a result the record label deleted the 12” single and replaced the album version with the 12” version to boost album sales. Other notable tracks include the US Dance chart top 20 hit ‘Anybody Wanna Party’, which simultaneously climbed all the way to #16 on the US R&B Chart.
BBR is so very proud to announce the release of GLORIA GAYNOR – LOVE TRACKS. Lovingly remastered, this CD comes complete with extensive liner notes including interviews and added bonus content making this BBR Remaster a must have item for all Disco, Soul, Funk and R&B fans out there!
