SCARED TO GET HAPPY A STORY OF INDIE-POP 1980-1989 - Various Artists

SCARED TO GET HAPPY A STORY OF INDIE-POP 1980-1989
SCARED TO GET HAPPY (A Story Of Indie Pop 1980-1989) is the first box set ever to document the explosion of Indie Pop in Britain across the 1980s. Compiled in loosely chronological fashion, the five CDs chart Indie Pop’s development from the post punk era and the dominance of Scottish bands through to its genre-defining C86 period and onto the end of the decade, with the arrival of Madchester and the shoegazing sound.

Inspired by the Nuggets compilations, the box set boasts 134 tracks spanning the Eighties, drawn from all the key labels of the period – Creation, Factory, Cherry Red, Rough Trade, Sarah, Subway Organisation, Zoo, Kitchenware, Pink, Chapter 22, In Tape, Medium Cool, Lazy, Dreamworld, 53rd & 3rd, Ron Johnson, el, Vindaloo, Red Rhino, Food, etc.

Many of the bands later tasted mainstream success: Primal Scream, Aztec Camera, Stone Roses, Pulp, the Wonder Stuff, Lloyd Cole & The Commotions, the Inspiral Carpets, the Soup Dragons, the Wedding Present, James, the La’s, del Amitri, the Primitives, the Jesus & Mary Chain, Prefab Sprout, the Shamen, Cud, the Bluebells, Black, the House Of Love, Strawberry Switchblade, Pop Will Eat Itself, the Darling Buds, Fuzzbox, That Petrol Emotion, the Railway Children, Jamie Wednesday (as Carter USM), the Milltown Brothers and the Boo Radleys.

The box set boasts a stylish 54-page booklet with a lengthy sleeve-note detailing each track and illustrations of the records and bands involved.

A few tracks (Strawberry Switchblade, Soup Dragons, Bluebells, Close Lobsters, etc.) have never officially been released before. Many others are extremely rare and make their debut on CD.

SCARED TO GET HAPPY will be promoted by a mini-festival at London’s 229 club on June 22nd, with an impressive roster: the Primitives, the BMX Bandits, the Brilliant Corners, the June Brides, Mighty Mighty, the Wolfhounds, the Popguns, 14 Iced Bears, the Blue Orchids and Yeah Yeah Noh.

Everything’s Shining Bright, the Lazy Recordings 1985-87 2CD
*** WE HAVE A VERY LIMITED AMOUNT OF SIGNED COPIES AVAILABLE, PLEASE ORDER NOW TO GET YOUR COPY!! ***

(PLEASE NOTE ALL SIGNED COPIES ARE NOW SOLD OUT!!)

Back in the mid-80s, The Primitives combined the fuzz guitars of The Jesus & Mary Chain with the pop sensibilities of Blondie and a nod to cult heroes The Velvet Underground. They swiftly rose from being a popular Indie guitar outfit to charting worldwide with "Crash”, kickstarting a craze in bands fronted by blonde female singers (Transvision Vamp, The Darling Buds et al).
Between 1985 and 1987, the band issued five singles/EP’s on independent label Lazy Records (also home to My Bloody Valentine and later Birdland) before signing with RCA.
Everything’s Shining Bright is named after their planned Lazy Records album, which was abandoned when the band left the label – indeed, seven of the ten previously unissued tracks here stem from those scotched LP sessions. Also unearthed is the band’s very first demo from 1985, consisting of three tracks including a dry-run through their eventual hit "Crash”.
This 2-CD set also boasts their promo-only live album at the ICA; as such, it offers their entire Lazy output from that period.
Those Lazy singles in full:
Thru The Flowers (May 1986) Indie No.20
Really Stupid (October 1986) Indie No.3
Stop Killing Me (February 1987) Indie No.2
Thru The Flowers (New Version - August 1987) Indie No.3
Ocean Blue (gig freebie 7”)
Compiled with guitarist PJ Court, this 2-CD compilation boasts re-mastered music as well as a beautifully annotated booklet boasting rare photos and personal memories from the band.

Release Date: 25/03/2013

Lovely 2CD 25th Anniversary Edition
Back in the mid-80s, The Primitives combined the fuzz guitars of The Jesus & Mary Chain with the pop sensibilities of Blondie and a nod to cult heroes The Velvet Underground. They swiftly rose from being a popular Indie guitar outfit to charting worldwide with ‘Crash’, kickstarting a craze in bands fronted by blonde female singers (Transvision Vamp, The Darling Buds et al).
Lovely was The Primitives’ debut album. Issued in April 1988 on the back of the success of ‘Crash’, it peaked at No. 6 in the UK, staying on the charts for ten weeks, and yet is unavailable on CD.
The Primitives’ profile has not been as high since their heyday, what with the release of a brand new studio album Echoes And Rhymes last year and Cherry Red’s 2-CD compilation of the band’s pre-RCA recordings, Everything’s Shining Bright, which surfaced in March.
This 25th anniversary 2-CD set boasts most of the band’s B-sides and other rare tracks from that successful year, as well as including those hit singles in full:
Crash (February 1988) No.5
Out Of Reach (April 1988) No.25
Way Behind Me (September 1988) No.36
Compiled with the help of guitarist PJ Court, this 2-CD compilation boasts re-mastered music as well as a splendid, annotated booklet boasting rare photos and personal memories from the band.

C86 – THE DELUXE EDITION (3CD Boxset)
Cherry Red is delighted to release this deluxe 3 CD boxset edition of the original iconic NME indie cassette compilation.

Curated by the same team behind last year’s award-winning 5-CD box set Scared To Get Happy, this highly anticipated reissue will be
housed in a 'clamshell'-style hinged box, with a chunky booklet including a 11,500-word sleeve-note by Neil Taylor and lots of pretty pictures.

In the NME's own words...

"
The album, first released on a cassette with NME in 1986, went on to inspire a generation of indie bands and features music by Primal Scream, The Pastels, Shop Assistants and The Wedding Present among many others.

Former NME writer Neil Taylor, who assisted in compiling the original 22 track album nearly 30 years ago, has written the liner notes for the reissue and helped with the curation of two bonus discs of material which will include songs exclusive to CD and some never released before including tracks by The Love Act, North of Cornwallis and Paul Groovy & The Pop Art Experience."

Halcyon Days - Complete Recordings 1985-1987
•    Hailing from Sheffield and named after an Orange Juice lyric, ONE THOUSAND VIOLINS evolved out of indie-pop duo The Page Boys, signing to Dan Treacy’s Dreamworld label in 1985. The band revolved around songwriters Colin Gregory and Dave Walmsley, who were influenced by the best in Sixties music.

•    Debut single ‘Halcyon Days’ won rave reviews and B-side ‘Like One Thousand Violins’ made John Peel’s Festive 50 that year. Second single, the more psychedelic-sounding ‘Please Don’t Sandblast My House’, made the Indie Chart in late 1986.

•    Their next single, ‘Ungrateful Bastard’, was issued on German label Constrictor and still made the Indie Top 30. The label also issued two mini-LPs by the band. After a final single for Dreamworld, ‘Locked Out Of The Love-In’, ONE THOUSAND VIOLINS issued ‘If I Were A Bullet’ on Report at the end of 1987.

•    Compiled with involvement from founding members Colin Gregory and John Wood, Halcyon Days offers the band’s complete recorded output from 1985 to 1987, prior to the band changing their line-up and sound. Many of these tracks are new to CD.
