Pyramid Of The Moon - Azteca

Pyramid Of The Moon
AZTECA, formed in 1972 in Oakland, was the vision of brothers Coke and Pete Escovedo following their successful time playing along side Latin-funk trailblazers, Santana. They are widely regarded to be the first large-scale group that combined multiple musical elements centred around and built as a Latin orchestra.
Born in the legendary Bay Area of San Francisco, Pete and Coke Escovedo grew up immersed in the Latin music so prevalent on the East coast of the US. Influences of Mambo and Salsa bred their love of percussion and they organised mambo sessions to hone their vocal and percussive skills surrounded by local musicians who played in the Caribbean style that captivated their musical passion.
Sometimes numbering up to 25 members on stage, AZTECA fused an array of musical styles and instruments ranging from horns, woodwinds, guitars, drums and multiple keyboards, percussionists and vocalists.
AZTECA featured a wealth of successful musicians including bassist Paul Jackson, known for his work on numerous Herbie Hancock albums, drummer Lenny White who played alongside some of the best Jazz artists of the time including Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard and Stanley Clarke. The line up also included Grammy Award Nominee, Tom Harrell. AZTECA would also serve as a platform for Sheila E, daughter of Pete Escovedo, to develop her skills as a percussionist.

Ginger Bakers Airforce
Ginger Baker is without doubt one of the most famous Rock Drummers ever - forming and playing in the worlds first super group "Cream" with Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce. This is Ginger's first official release since 1994 when he released BBM-Baker Bruce and Gary Moore. This Airforce album was originally released in 1970 a year after the demise of Cream. A real gem, the cover reads as a who's who of musicians; including Steve Winwood, Denny Laine, Rick Grech, Graham Bond, as well as being engineered by Roy Thomas Baker who went onto produce Queen. Dino Valente
A fascinating enigma of the San Francisco psychedelic scene, Valente is most famed as the author of the song Get Together. This definitive '60s love-and-peace anthem was recorded on the Jefferson Airplane's first album, and taken into the Top Ten by the Youngbloods. Valente was an original member of Quicksilver Messenger Service, and his one off solo single in 1964, a folk pop song called Birdses became the inspiration for Gene Clark to name his new band the Birdses, amended of course, to the Byrds, because of his admiration for Valente's single

In 1968, following a spell in jail for drug possession, he got a deal with Epic Records, recording an album produced by Bob Johnston (most famous for overseeing much of Bob Dylan's classic '60s output). It was idiosyncratic even within the psychedelic community. Valente sang elliptical, stream-of-consciousness hippyisms without much in the way of narrative, beginning, or end, but with an evocative lyricism. The accompaniment is mostly stripped down guitar playing pleasingly haunting minor folk-jazz acoustic chords, swelled by wads of studio reverb.

In March this year, Mojo's 67 Lost Albums You Must Own article included this album:

'On leaving Quicksilver Messenger Service after changing his name to avoid the taxman, the chemically deranged but incredibly charming Dino Valente knocked off this beautifully elongated acoustic ramble, then promptly disappeared. Emotional, aching and gloriously daft in places, its stream of lo-fi consciousness spawned generations of bedroom strumming by moody suicidal peaceniks. All a bit intense on the surface, it's wonderfully engaging even today. (DH)'

RPM make this album available once more in a package with an insightful essay by Nina Antonia. In the current climate of Devendra Banhart, James Yorkeston et al, Valente sounds neither out of place nor out of time.

Twice as Sweet- Expanded Edition
Released on 26/10/11 TWICE AS SWEET was A TASTE OF HONEY's third album overall, and their first since being reduced to the duo of JANICE MARIE JOHNSON and HAZEL PAYNE.
