Sinker, Line & Hook - The Anthology 1987-99 - Aardvarks (The)

Sinker, Line & Hook - The Anthology 1987-99
Inspired by the best in 60s sounds (Mod, garage, pop-art, psychedelia freakbeat), The Aardvarks were formed in the mid-1980s in Ealing, West London, as part of the same scene which eventually reared Kula Shaker.
For many years, they were one of the most popular bands on the Mod and 60s Revival circuit, issuing a string of acclaimed 45s on labels such as Screaming Apple and Detour.
The Aardvarks’ 12-year lifespan is remembered on this compilation, built around their 1995 album for Delerium, Bargain, while also offering an equal number of choice tracks from elsewhere.
The ‘Varks tasted brief fame in the 90s, appearing on the James Whale TV Show and even supporting Bonnie Tyler!

Return To Paradise: A History Of Exotica

Released on 20/09/10. Strange, Sultry and Seductive...fierce, fascinating and feverish - here are sounds to quicken the heart-beat; the tropical fantasy of a hidden world. A woman¹s voice calls, hypnotic and compelling; drums repeat the haunting command and the music weaves a spell of mystery.

From the early fifties, with the onset of international air travel, Exotica became a massively popular musical trend; making it possible for middleclass Americans to simulate an authentic travelogue experience - to India, Africa, Cuba, or the South Seas - in the comfort of their suburban homes.

This public looked to Les Baxter, Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman, Yma Sumac, Korla Pandit or Robert Drasnin to provide (in contrast to the prevailing rock and roll scene) a mystical combination of Oriental, African and Latin sounds, decorated with natural effects gathered from the sea, sky and forest.

Exotic music was originally conceived with Ravel's Bolero and Debussy¹s Pagodes. It left the classical world and entered pop through Les Baxter. In 1950 he created Voice of the Xtabay with four octave Peruvian singer Yma Sumac and a year later released the seminal work of exotica, his tone poem Ritual of the Savage (Le Sacre Du Sauvage).

Jewels Of The Sea
For as long as man beheld the ocean's splendour, inspiration has come with the tides and stayed to work its magic on the imagination. To a composer the sea offers wondrous motion, a shimmering surface of flowing mystery. Les Baxter gratefully accepted these things, and distilled them into exotic miniatures of dream-like beauty - sparkling, opalescent gems.

Dreamy, sensual, iridescent, abstracted, this is quintessential Les Baxter. Baxter invented exotica and created the definitive works of the genre, among them Ritual of the Savage, Tamboo!, Ports of Pleasure, The Sacred Idol and Jewels of the Sea.

Baxter imposed his passion for Stravinsky and Debussy on escapist travelogue themes to create a unique form of popular music that was far from "easy listening" in the conventional sense.

The depth of Baxter's artistry was acknowledged by Sun Ra, who considered him to be the most adventurous and enlightened post-war composer. His wild inventiveness has made Baxter a hero to modern artists as diverse as Jello Biafra and Beck.

1st Floor
Following RPM International's Young Flowers anthology, which attracted national press coverage in their home country Denmark, we continue our programme of reissuing the best and most collectable Danish music.
1st Floor was Denmark’s Sergeant Pepper. English psychedelia found a home in Denmark in 1967 with The Floor, whose only album 1st Floor (Philips XPY 855701)comes close to The Hollies at their most whimsical and The Kinks at their most pastoral.
Before 1967, most of The Floor were in The Hitmakers, Denmark’s kings of beat pop. The summer of love arrived, they spilt and four-fifths picked up the pieces. A new guitarist was added.
‘Turn It On’ they sang, and they did. Flowers, drinking tea, hanging out with Mrs O’Grady and Mr Jones were central to 1st Floor. Beautifully and baroquely orchestrated, the album showcased a song, by future Abba member Bjorn Ulvaeus.
The first official reissue of this psychedelic pop rarity is re-mastered from the original tapes. The Floor's 1968 non album single is included as a bonus.

The Exits
The Exits formed in 1977 around the Battersea and Tooting areas of south London and signed to Lightning Records (then riding high with Anthea & Donna's huge # 1 hit ‘Uptown Top Ranking’), scoring a top 10 hit in the punk/independent charts with their lone 1978 single, ‘The Fashion Plague’ b/w ‘Cheam’.   They quickly became something of a live draw in south London and played several high profile shows including one at the London Dungeon supporting Screaming Lord Sutch! Their set was largely comprised of songs written by bassist/vocalist Colin Swan and guitarist/vocalist Geno Buckmaster which evoked the best of Elvis Costello, Pete Townshend and Graham Parker but they also threw covers of Tommy James & The Shondells' ‘I Think We're Alone Now’ and Small Faces' ‘Tin Soldier’ in for good measure!   A second single, "Keep On Tryin'", was slated for release and an album's worth of high-quality demos laid down in early 1979. Gigs promoting the 'forthcoming album' showed great promise. Sadly, Lightning slowly backed away from the sounds of the new wave, preferring to concentrate on the lucrative soul/disco market and The Exits recordings were left in limbo... until now! Not surprisingly, the band soon folded with Swan and Buckmaster re-emerging a year later as '60s/mod pop heroes The Direct Hits. But that's another story...   With the band's full co-operation we have unearthed those unreleased Exits album demos and are proud to present them on CD for the very first time.
