Who Is This Bitch, Anyway - Marlena Shaw

Who Is This Bitch, Anyway
By the early ‘70s, Marlena Shaw had already established herself as a potent live performer and recording artist, thanks to such tunes as ‘Woman Of The Ghetto’ and ‘California Soul.’
In 1973, the upstate New York-born vocalist became the first female singer signed to the prestigious Blue Note label and her fourth album for the company, 1975’s WHO IS THIS BITCH, ANYWAY? reached No. 8 on Billboard’s Jazz charts and No. 47 on the R&B listings.
WHO IS THIS BITCH, ANYWAY? was produced by Bernard Ighner (the writer of the classic ‘Everything Must Change’) who assembled top musicians such as drummer Harvey Mason, bassist Chuck Rainey and guitarists Larry Carlton and David T. Walker for the sessions.
Standout tracks include Marlena’s version of Roberta Flack’s ‘Feel Like Making Love,’ the Shaw favourite ‘Loving You Was Like A Party’ and the slice-of-life ‘You, Me And Ethel’ and ‘Street Walkin’ Woman,’ laced with Shaw’s well-known sassy brand of mother wit and humour.
Out of print outside of Japan for several years, WHO IS THIS BITCH, ANYWAY? includes notes by renowned U.S. writer Gary Jackson including 2012 quotes from Marlena and Harvey Mason.
WHO IS THIS BITCH, ANYWAY? is the second reissue from Marlena’s Blue Note catalogue on SoulMusic Records, following the best-selling "From The Depths Of My Soul” (SMCR-5027).

Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce a newly remastered edition of the 1971 album by the legendary heavy Progressive rock outfit FUZZY DUCK.

Featuring GARTH WATT ROY (guitar, vocals), ROY SHARLAND (organ), MICK HAWKSWORTH (bass) and PAUL FRANCIS (drums), the band signed to Gordon Mills’ MAM label, recording an album and two singles for the imprint. Although their records failed to sell at the time of release, FUZZY DUCK’s recorded output became highly sought after by collectors throughout the world, with their heavy organ driven progressive rock winning over new listeners in the ensuing years.

This Esoteric Recordings reissue has been newly remastered from the original master tapes, includes four bonus tracks taken from the two singles issued by the band and features a booklet that fully restores all original album artwork with a new essay.

Press:-

"as a result of only 500 original copies being pressed, this record’s reputation precedes it – and it’s mostly worthy of the hype." (Record Collector - July 2012)

The Grand Tour / Alone Again
When Johnny Cash was asked "Who’s your favourite singer?” he responded "you mean apart from George Jones?”
Here we have two great albums from the greatest voice in country music.
"The Grand Tour” released in 1974 features two country chart singles, the title track reaching No. 1 and ‘Once You’ve Had The Best’ getting to No. 3. Music critic Thom Jurek in a retrospective review rated it as one of the finest country albums of the 70s.
The other featured album "Alone Again” was originally released in 1976 and includes the No. 3 hit single ‘Her name is . . . ‘. Other titles reflect the demons George was facing at the time with booze, pills and marital turmoil – ‘A Drunk Can’t Be A Man’, ‘Stand On My Own Two Knees’ and ‘Right Now I’d Come Back And Melt In Her Arms’.

Press:-

"This 1972 set is the first Billy Paul album that most people heard, it being the one that produced Me & Mrs Jones as lead single. It's amongst his best too, for it also includes the superb mid-tempo Philly roller Brown Baby, a tribute the kids who took part in the civil rights marches, the eight-minute epic I'm Just A Prioner,a Gamble-Sigler-Hurtt song that Billy confesses reminded him of a stretch behind bars his step-dad did, and the funky follow-up to Mrs Jones, Am I Black Enough For You?". 3/5* Chris Wells (Echoes - September 2012)

"Now digitally remastered for simultaneous release on BIG BREAK RECORDS, two albums recorded by Billy Paul are enjoyable but very different." - Alan Jones, Music Week
