A Man And A Woman - Isaac Hayes & Dionne Warwick

A Man And A Woman
SoulMusic Records is proud to celebrate one of the ‘first families of soul music’ with the 2012 reissue of three titles that reflect the amazing talent of sisters  Dionne and Dee Dee Warwick and their aunt Cissy Houston - expanded editions of Dee Dee Warwick’s 1969 Foolish Fool LP (SMCR-5053); Cissy Houston’s first solo album, 1970’s Presenting Cissy Houston (SMCR-5054); and this 1977 live album by Isaac Hayes & Dionne Warwick, A MAN & A WOMAN.

Both producer-songwriter-turned-recording artist-performer Isaac Hayes and international hitmaker Dionne Warwick had already established themselves as musical icons by the time Hayes’ management team suggested the two tour together in the summer of 1977.  It was a logical pairing in particular because Hayes had enjoyed his first experience of success as an outfront chartmaker with his unforgettable version of Warwick’s classic 1964 hit, ‘Walk On By’ that was featured on his "Hot Buttered Soul” breakthough album in 1969.

Working together with their respective touring bands and background vocalists, the spectacular show focused on obvious hits from the catalogues of each performer including Dionne’s original ‘I Say A Little Prayer’ combined with Isaac’s memorable reading of the Glen Campbell hit, ‘By The Time I Get To Phoenix.’

In addition to tracks associated with each of the performers - such as "Then Came You” (Dionne’s 1974 chart-topping duet with The Spinners) and Isaac’s 1975 hits, ‘Chocolate Chip’ and ‘Come Live With Me’ - the pair created some great combinations of hits of the day including a fourteen-minute-plus whirlwind medley of seven songs; and a soulful combo of ‘Feelings’ and ‘My Eyes Adored You.’

Bells A Poppin’
Ms. Bell has a very distinctive vocal sound, and
many will have recognised the singing be it knocking out hits for Blue
Mink, adverts for Big Mac, Wonderfuel Gas, Brooke Bond ‘D’, or via an
ipod full of BV sessions. It’s a Soul sound that found origins in a
touring gospel spectacular that arrived in Britain from the US in the
early 60’s. When the tour finished and the party returned to the States,
Ms Bell remained to forge her Pop/Soul career in the UK. Initially
signed to EMI’s HMV label, Bell really blossomed when she moved to
Phillips in 1965.Here she was often backed by the coterie of
singers that provided a backbone to the pop industry at the time,
including Lesley Duncan, Doris Troy, Sunny, Rosetta Hightower and Bell’s
long time close friend, Dusty Springfield (repaying the sterling work
Bell did backing Springfield’s own recordings). Three albums and many
singles were the result, each standing the test of time in what many
consider to be her greatest recordings.RPM present the first LP
“Bells A Poppin’”, originally released in 1967, along with the singles
that preceded it. Highlights include the gospelly “I Really Got Carried
Away”, co-written by Bell and Doris Troy; Cissy Houston’s “Don’t Come
Running To Me”; the long time Northern Soul dancer favourite “Picture Me
Gone” – all of which is wrapped up with a detailed story by Bob
Stanley.

Thelma Jones

Thelma Jones launched her career in 1967, releasing a few notable singles through Barry Records. The classic soul/jazz album, THELMA JONES, was her debut LP and was released almost ten years after her first single The House That Jack Built.

THELMA JONES was produced by seminal record producer Bert DeCoteaux after his success with The Main Ingredient, Linda Lewis and Marlena Shaw. The album’s first single was I SECOND THAT EMOTION, a surprisingly fresh reworking of the Smokey Robinson and the Miracles classic. Thelma’s version spent 6 weeks in the US R&B charts in 1978. Also included on this album are versions of The O’Jays’ NOW THAT WE FOUND LOVE as well as the evergreen ANGEL OF THE MORNING which had previously been recorded by Dusty Springfield and Nina Simone.

· THELMA JONES received strong critical acclaim and led to Thelma becoming something of a cult icon for Soul and Jazz music aficionados, particularly in the UK. The album also features her earlier Columbia single, SALTY TEARS, which was produced by southern soul legend, Brad Shapiro

· Released in deluxe Super Jewel cases, with three bonus tracks and a brand new interview with the artist, THELMA JONES is a must for all Soul and Jazz fans out there!

Press:-

"(the album) contains her signature tune, the Brad Shapiro produced ballad Salty Tears, and a whole lot of sides overseen by Bert DeCoteaux, the best of which – the mid tempo I Can Dream, the funky Hanks and Grey tune How Long and a trio of Sam Dees songs including the trademark slowie Lonely Enough To Try Anything – stand up well.”

Echoes / April 2012 / Chris Wells

Why Can't We Live Together: Expanded Version
· Timmy Thomas is a keyboardist, R&B singer, songwriter and producer who hails from Evansville, Indiana where he was born on the 13th of November 1944. As a keyboardist Thomas came to prominence as an accompanist with Jazz legends Donald Byrd and Cannonball Adderley in the early 60’s before joining the group Phillip & The Faithfuls, releasing several singles on the Goldwax record label in 1964, before settling in Memphis as a session musician while still releasing solo sides for Goldwax with modest success. After a brief stint on the Climax label in 1970 Thomas found a new home on Glades Records, a subsidiary of T.K. Records, in Miami in 1972.

· WHY CAN’T WE LIVE TOGETHER was the first of four albums Thomas recorded on Glades Records and with the title track released as the first single in late 1972 Thomas had his first and biggest hit with ‘Why Can’t We Live Together’ which peaked at #1 R&B and #3 Pop in the U.S., and #12 in the U.K. The success of the title track propelled the album to #10 R&B and #53 Pop in 1973.

· "Why Can’t We Live Together” has a very stripped down production, a sound echoed throughout the album, with Thomas’s soulful organ played in an improvisational style over the rhythm sections, giving room for his impassioned vocals. Other notable cuts on the album are the standard ‘The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’ and a cover of The Chi-lites ‘The Coldest Days Of My Life.’

· BBR is very proud to bring you WHY CAN’T WE LIVE TOGETHER, completely remastered and repackaged complete with extensive liner notes and extended bonus content and a brand new interview with Timmy Thomas.

· WHY CAN’T WE LIVE TOGETHER is a must have for all R&B, Soul, Jazz and Funk fans out there!
