Starchild - Teena Marie

Starchild
The late, great TEENA MARIE had established herself as a consistent hitmaker among black music audiences in the US as a result of five albums for Motown and her 1983 Epic debut set ROBBERY (reissued by SoulMusic Records in 2012 as an expanded edition, SMCR-5048).
With the release of 1984’s STARCHILD (which became a US Top 10 R&B and pop Top 40 best-seller), the L.A. native finally achieved mainstream international pop success thanks to the classic single, ‘Lovergirl,’ which reached No. 4 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart and became the biggest hit of the multi-talented singer, songwriter, producer and musician’s amazing three-decade-long career.
For the sessions, Teena assembled an all-star cast of musicians and singers that included Leon Ware, Narada Michael Walden, Ronnie McNeir, Billy Griffin, Nathan East, Preston Glass, James Jamerson Jr. and Paulinho Da Costa.
As with its predecessor Robbery, Teena wrote or co-wrote all nine tracks on the album including the standouts ‘Out On A Limb,’ the club hit ‘Jammin’,’ and her soulful tribute to the late Marvin Gaye, ‘My Dear Mr. Gaye.’
This expanded edition of STARCHILD features five bonus tracks including a six-minute-plus instrumental of ‘Lovergirl’ (making its CD debut) and an eight-minute dance mix of ‘Jammin.’

The Magic Garden

· Wow! Here at Rev-Ola we’re proud to present this true undisputed classic of orchestrated, psych-tinged soft pop.

· The 5th Dimension are one of the most successful American bands of the late ‘60s. Hey, everybody knows their hit versions of ‘Up, Up And Away’ and ‘Aquarius’!

· However, in 1968 they were teamed up with producer Bones Howe and wunderkind composer/arranger/all-round bona fide musical genius beyond redoubt, Jimmy Webb, who presented them with a complex song cycle based on his own tumultuous relationship with his partner. Nestling between such dyed-in-the-wool classics as ‘Carpet Man’, ‘The Girls’ Song’, ‘The Worst That Could Happen’ (which all became hit singles for other artists) and the life-affirming title track (as covered by Dusty Springfield no less) are such lesser-spotted Webb gems as ‘Summer’s Daughter’ and ‘Paper Cup’. The whole cycle is linked with beautifully ornate pieces of orchestration, sitar flourishes and ethereal vocals.

· The contractual obligation inclusion of an earlier recording of The Beatles’ ‘Ticket To Ride’ was originally shoehorned into the middle of the running order but we’ve taken the liberty of shuffling it to the end so it no longer interrupts the flow of the cycle.

· One hears accolades like "great albums of the ‘60s” bandied around willy-nilly these days but on this occasion we can state it with confidence.

· Digitally re-mastered by the lovely Norman Blake and with liner notes by the gorgeous Duglas T Stewart!

All By Myself / Stay With Me
Four- time Grammy winning Regina Belle’s debut album, ‘All By Myself’ released  in 1987, included an impressive five hit singles "Show Me the Way", "So Many Tears", "How Could You Do It to Me", "Please Be Mine" and "You Got the Love".
The record reached number 85 on the US charts, and number 14 in the r&B charts.

‘Stay With Me’ (1989) took things up a notch or two. The record got to number 63 in the mainstream US charts, and also topped the r&b charts, proving that she was a coming force. In fact, both the songs ‘Baby Come To Me’ and ‘Make It Like It Was’ were to make it to the top of the r&b singles chart, such was her growing power and potency. There were also two more singles here which cracked the top ten in the r&b chart "All I Want Is Forever" and "What Goes Around".

Barely a few months after its release, ‘Stay With Me’ was certified gold in America, having passed 500,000 sales
