The Cinema Of Elizabeth Taylor - Various Artists

The Cinema Of Elizabeth Taylor
Elizabeth Taylor, who passed away in March, was the last authentic movie star. A great artist and an incandescent beauty, she was in the public eye from the age of eleven and stayed there for six decades. No other actress of our time graced so many magazine covers or consumed so much space in the media, whether because of her controversial earnings on Cleopatra ("If someone's dumb enough to offer me a million dollars to make a picture, I'm certainly not dumb enough to turn it down.") or her five Oscar nominations (she won two) or the public's lengthy fascination over her tempestuous romances with Richard Burton (condemned by the Vatican), to whom she married and divorced twice.

This EL edition covers the years of her physical and thespian development, under contract to Louis B. Mayer at MGM between 1944 and 1960; from National Velvet, the film that first brought her fame, through the trilogy of pictures with Montgomery Clift (A Place in the Sun, Raintree County and Suddenly Last Summer), through Giant (in which she co-starred with James Dean; he was killed in a sports-car accident just days after completing his part), to the movies that are considered by many to be the creative apex of her career, Cat On A Hot Tin Roof (opposite Paul Newman, as the sexually frustrated Maggie) and the film that won her, her first Oscar for Best Actress, Butterfield 8.
