PWL - From The Factory Floor (Expanded Edition) - Phil Harding

PWL - From The Factory Floor (Expanded Edition)
To the modern pop world, Stock, Aitken and Waterman have taken on something of a legendary status in recent years. The PWL label and studios produced so many hits in the 1980s that their name became synonymous with success, and they created the template so expertly worked today by their protégée Simon Cowell today is undeniable. From Elton John’s tea boy to successful record producer, Phil Harding’s career spans over 30 years, ranging from recording The Clash in the 70s to producing hit singles for East 17 and Boyzone in the 90s. Phil played a key role at PWL Studios, Pete Waterman’s vision for a ‘British Motown’, alongside the legendary Stock, Aitken and Waterman production team, whose Hit Factory productions and mixes sold over 30 million units around the world, via a surprisingly diverse CV of artists, including ABC, RICK ASTLEY, BANANARAMA, BAND AID II, BASIA, CHIC, CLIMIE FISHER, THE COOL NOTES, DEAD OR ALIVE, HAZELL DEAN, DEPECHE MODE, DIVINE, DOLLAR, JASON DONOVAN, EIGHTH WONDER, ERASURE, FIVE STAR, THE FOUR TOPS, LONNIE GORDON, DEBBIE HARRY, THELMA HOUSTON, IMAGINATION, THE JACKSON FIVE, JESUS JONES, MATT BIANCO, MEL & KIM, KYLIE MINOGUE, GARY MOORE, NITZER EBB, PET SHOP BOYS, PRINCESS, CLIFF RICHARD, DIANA ROSS, SINITTA, JIMMY SOMERVILLE, SONIA, JERMAINE STEWART, DONNA SUMMER, THE THREE DEGREES, T'PAU, JOHN TRAVOLTA & OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN and VOICE OF THE BEEHIVE. Refreshingly and affectionately frank, ‘PWL - From The Factory Floor’ tells the inside story of one of the most successful and fast-paced music studios of all time. Phil’s pivotal role provides a uniquely broad perspective, extending from the top of the organisation, mixing many classic SAW hits, down to the bottom , training up-and-coming engineers, as well as involvement in the creative, business (and diplomatic!) aspects of being a critically-acclaimed producer in his own right and developing a profile and client base under the management of Pete Waterman. After a sold-out limited release in 2009, the book has undergone extensive development into this Expanded Edition, and contains a wealth of new material. Highlights include Phil’s behind-the-scenes journey through the eventful rise (and fall) of PWL, commentary on the working styles and sounds covered during PWL’s history, detailed recollections of specific, classic PWL mixes, in-depth interviews on working with some of the most significant artists of the time, a comprehensive guide to the south London studio building and its evolution, an A-to-Z of PWL staff, a fascinating day in the life photo tour from recently rediscovered home video footage, Phil’s PWL discography - a comprehensive guide to his many hundreds of releases, and a full review of Phil and his fellow producer Ian Curnow’s extensive personal archives and master tapes (including, for the first time, details on many PWL projects that remain unreleased and previously forgotten), and a new Harding/Curnow interview, looking back on their time working at PWL . The book also takes in the technicalities of studio work, including a detailed case study of the mixing of a No. 1 single in the form of Kylie’s Hand On Your Heart, and information on the cutting edge technology and techniques used in making the studio a world leader. This, along with the inclusion of many previously-unseen photographs, makes ‘PWL From The Factory Floor - Expanded Edition’ a must-read for 80s, club, dance and pop devotees, contemporary music followers, studio technicians and creators and those with any interest in the extreme highs and lows that only pop music can provide. Phil is still an in-demand writer, producer, mix engineer, guest speaker and lecturer. He speaks and lectures at Universities and Colleges around the UK, recently with Pete Waterman, and is currently Vice-Chairman of the Music Producers Guild and Chairman (MPG) of the Joint Audio and Media Education Service (JAMES). He is regularly featured and interviewed in music production magazines and websites and is remembered fondly by just about everybody who has worked with him. A rarity indeed in his business!

A double-CD package, 'PHIL HARDING CLUB MIXES OF THE 80s' of 25 digitally-remastered classic 80s remixes and rarities is now being released as a companion to the book - featuring ABC | DIANA ROSS | HOLLY JOHNSON | RICK ASTLEY | BLOW MONKEYS | DEAD OR ALIVE | EIGHTH WONDER & THE PET SHOP BOYS | IMAGINATION | THE FOUR TOPS | FIVE STAR | MICHAEL JACKSON WITH THE JACKSON 5 | GODLEY & CREME | BASIA (of MATT BIANCO) | JIMMY RUFFIN and more (Cherry Pop label - Cat No: CRPOPD100) <<

Break Out
The Pointer Sisters were one of the most successful female groups the music industry has seen with 13 top 20 singles and 8 top 40 albums shared between the US and UK pop charts. The 1983 release of Break Out saw the group reach the peak of their commercial success. This was the group's sixth album with producer Richard Perry, with whom they had three big US Pop hits: FIRE (#2, 1979), HE'S SO SHY (#3, 1980) and Slow Hand (#2, 1981). With BREAK OUT, the group took the advice of RUTH POINTER’s son, who wanted them to record a dance album. PERRY sought out associate producers for each track, giving BREAK OUT the electronic feel of 1983 R&B. The album’s lead single I Need You was recorded to reintroduce the group to their African-American fanbase, reaching the R&B Top 20. Second single Automatic reached #2 R&B and #5 Pop, giving the group their biggest hit for three years and becoming massively successful internationally. Jump (For My Love) followed suit, reaching #3 Pop and R&B in the US and #6 in the UK. BBR is very proud to present this 2CD deluxe edition, featuring the 1983 version of the album (massively successful on its release in the UK) for the first time on CD, plus the updated 1984 version and all of the 12" and 7" versions of each track from the album. Released in a deluxe digipak with 24-page booklet, the extensive liner notes feature interviews with Anita Pointer, Ruth Pointer, Richard Perry and several of the album’s associate producers. This edition of Break Out introduces BBR’s new deluxe 2CD re-masters.
