A Lover Spurned: Live At The Astoria - Marc Almond

A Lover Spurned: Live At The Astoria
The second in our Marc Almond DVD series sees the great man back on home soil, performing to a devoted fanbase at London's famous Astoria club. Another classic performance captures Marc at the height of his late eighties solo success, backed by a full band as he runs through his repertoire. Many Marc Almond and Soft Cell hits are featured in the performance, including "Stories Of Johnny", "Tears Run Rings" and "Mother Fist".

The DVD also features three bonus tracks, including the number one hit "Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart", taken from the matinee performance at the Berlin show featured in the first Marc Almond DVD release. Renaissance
Esoteric Recordings announce the release of a newly remastered and expanded edition of the classic 1970 debut album by RENAISSANCE.Although the band would later find fame with a completely different line-up, Renaissance began life as a group formed by former Yardbirds members Keith Relf and Jim Mccarthy. Joined by vocalist jane relf, keyboard player john hawken and bassist Louis Cennamo, Renaissance successfully melded Classical, Folk and Rock influences into a unique sound that perfectly suited the emerging Progressive era.Released by Island Records in 1970, the album featured the mighty Kings & Queens , alongwith the excellent Island and Bullet. This Esoteric Recordings edition is newly re-mastered and adds both sides of the band’s first single as bonus tracks

The World Of Sabu
Released 18/08/08. Selar Shaik Sabu made his first film appearance in 1937 as a 12-year-old orphan, having landed the title role in Elephant Boy purely by chance after being plucked from Indian obscurity by a British location crew. His rise to international stardom was swift and dramatic with leading roles in Alexander Korda’s productions The Thief of Bagdad and Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book. But by the time he appeared in Powell & Pressburger’s Black Narcissus in 1947 that stardom was already guttering, and during the remaining 16 years of his tragically short life he was obliged to accept increasingly minor roles that mostly traded on former glories.

Yet during those ten extraordinary years Sabu illuminated the screen in a way that remains without precedent. The renowned Hungarian film composer Miklos Rozsa wrote the scores for The Thief of Bagdad and Kipling’s Jungle Book. Our edition restores them to the catalogue for the first time in decades. Sabu narrates the Jungle book to Rozsa’s music in character as Mowgli. The result is charming.

The recordings were originally released as a set of four 78 rpm discs in 1940. The first ever film soundtrack album Black Narcissus is classic Powell and Pressburger; The Archers at the height of their powers. A triumph of artistry in cinema to which Sabu contributes the memorable role of the young general.
