Walk Don't Run - Ventures (The)

Walk Don't Run
Formed in Tacoma, Washington, The Ventures' created a brilliant new reverb-drenched guitar sound that encapsulated the modernist attitudes of the early sixties.
They went on to be the most successful instrumental group of all time, selling 90 million records.
It is impossible to overstate The Ventures popularity in Japan, where they captured the imagination of a whole generation. Transcending the language barrier, the group sold 40 million albums in Japan alone (outselling The Beatles two-to-one).
The Ventures hit debut album 'Walk Don't Run' was one of the first rock albums to be recorded in stereo and we present it here in both the original stereo and mono versions. The title track, written by Johnny Smith, reached No.2 in the US single chart in 1960, and remains their signature piece.
In this el set, The Ventures album is augmented by recordings of the same vintage by pioneer British guitarist Bert Weedon, the first man to take a guitar instrumental, Guitar Boogie Shuffle, to the top of the UK charts.
Best known for his Play In A Day book which has inspired generations of fledgling guitarists, Weedon enjoyed six UK single hits in 1959-60 paving the way for The Shadows and The Tornados.

Stardancer
Rapp stated that Stardancer was the first album since the first Pearls album One Nation Underground over which he had full control. The fierce anti-war song "Fourth Day of July", with its references to "the broken children of Vietnam", was widely played in "underground" circles of the time. The lighthearted "Summer of '55" contains some of Rapp's cleverest aphorisms, such as "When the day breaks / the pieces fall on you". Two of his other songs, "Stardancer" and "For The Dead In Space", reflect on themes of loss against a background of space travel and can be seen as reworkings of Like most of the Pearls Before Swine albums, the sleeve design used classic art works, in this case the painting "Descent of the Rebel Angels" by Pieter Brueghel the Elder on the front sleeve, and a William Morris background design on the reverse.Pearls Before Swine's earlier "Rocket Man".

Sunforest
Released 15/06/09. Sunforest was the ninth album recorded by American singer-songwriter Tom Rapp (either with or without his group Pearls Before Swine), his second for Blue Thumb Records and his final record before his lengthy retirement from the music industry after the mid-1970s. Sunforest was released in 1973 and was credited to "Tom Rapp / Pearls Before Swine". Like its immediate predecessor, Stardancer, the album was recorded with members of the touring group Pearls Before Swine (Art Ellis and Bill Rollins), supplemented by a selection of prominent Nashville session musicians. The sleeve design showed a cover painting of Rapp, and two small reproductions of paintings by Henri Rousseau were included on the back cover. Our Price: £9.95

The Haunted Pad - British instrumental guitar music of the sixties part one 1960-61
The Halycon days of British instrumental guitar pop were in the early
sixties, sandwiched between 'What do You Want' and 'She Loves You'. The disc that sparked the revolution was The Shadows' Apache, the
summer hit of 1960 in the UK. It was flanked by 'Hit and Miss' by The John Barry Seven (the snappy new theme of Juke Box Jury) and The Ventures' Walk Don't Run; by Duane Eddy and by Johnny & the Hurricanes. Bert Weedon enjoyed four instrumental Top 20 hits that year.
Apache captured the public's imagination and brought instrumental
guitar music squarely into the mainstream and a real treasure chest of
highly individualistic groups emerged in the wake of The Shadows success; all encouraged by the recent expansion of the UK single chart to a Top 50.
Big Jim Sullivan's Krew Kats (formerly Marty Wilde's backing band,
The Wildcats) were out of the top drawer and can only wonder what
might have been. Still, drummer Brian Bennett and bassist Licorice Locking went on to replace Tony Meehan and Jet Harris in the Shadows and Sullivan himself became Britain's premier session guitarist.
Impressive also, The Scorpions, whose searing Rockin' at the Phil'
has been described as "possibly the zenith of UK rock'n'roll guitar
playing as we know it". 'Cat's Eyes' and 'Flyover’ by The Ted Taylor Four,
pop art singles distinguished by space-age interplay between guitarist Bob Rogers and Taylor's keyboards. The Phantoms, from Cambridge, who encountered phenomenal success in Scandinavia and made it their home and the guitarists Rhet Stoller and Judd Proctor, who were able to combine virtuosity with teen appeal.
Just months before 'Telstar', the "Alchemist of Pop", Joe Meek, came
with two astonishing instrumental guitar recordings, The Outlaws "Dream of the West', a Wild West concept album released before the end of '61(!), and The Moontrekkers' ghoulish 'Night of the Vampire', which infiltrated the Top 50 at around the same time but was banned by the BBC as "unsuitable for people of a nervous disposition", Nero and the Gladiators also fell foul of Broadcasting House; daring to compress Grieg's ‘Hall of the Mountain King’ into 1.57 of guitar noise and playfully dressing as Romans got them banned "on the grounds of poor taste."
