Heartbreak Street - Wilma Lee And Stoney Cooper

Heartbreak Street
25 staggeringly sad and lonely songs from this almost forgotten husband and wife team who were Opry stalwarts in the 50s and 60s. Taken from their Hickory Records output and mixing their rootsy gospel and soulful back-porch style. Glorious vocal interplay and some searching fiddle from Stoney Cooper makes this a set that's strangely haunting.

Paving The Highway With Tears
Resplendent in his lavish and colourful sequin-studded suits, Hank Snow had a career covering six decades during which he sold more than 80 million albums, and was one of the biggest stars of country music practically from it's origins until his passing, a unique man and a unique achievement. Born in Nova Scotia in 1914, Snow embarked on a musical career as a teenager, conquering Canadian radio as "The Yodelling Ranger", until his voice changed and so did his name! In 1950, Snow had the monster hit, "I'm Movin' On", the first of many, and covered by country, R&B and Rock acts to this day...Everyone from Johnny Cash to The Rolling Stones has had their take of this classic song.. Along the way, Hank even briefly managed his young protege Elvis Presley, introducing him at The Grand Ole Opry as he had done for Hank Williams before him. Hank Snow was a giant of country music, and here we present some of his greatest recordings. A member of the Country Music Hall Of Fame, the Canadian Country Music Hall Of Fame, and the Nova Scotia Music Hall Of Fame, there simply isn't a hall of fame complete without Hank! Our Price: £9.95

The outlaw's prayer - epic country hits 1971-1981
In country music’s roster of great honky tonk singers, Johnny Paycheck is without doubt one of the greatest. In 1977 he enjoyed his only country chart No.1 with the classic novelty, ‘Take This Job And Shove It’ a record so huge all across America it inspired scores of examples of industrial action, became an anthem for America’s blue collar workforce and inspired a movie of the same title.

In all he accumulated sixty country chart hits between 1965 and 1989 and placed twenty albums on the country LP charts between 1966 and 1987. An achievement that places him within the top 100 country performers of all time.

Collected on this CD are 26 country hits he enjoyed on Epic Records between 1971 and 1981.

Press:-

"A true country music renegade whose life and times are best described by the song I’m The Only Hell (Mama Ever Raised), the late Johnny Paycheck is still held in high-esteem by many veteran country music fans." Alan Cackett (Maverick - September/October 2012)

Double Trouble / A Taste Of Yesterday’s Wine
In 1980 the two bad boys of Country Music released "Double Trouble” an album comprising mainly rock and roll classics – no-one was going to have more fun in the studio than George and Johnny. The album produced four hit singles, ‘Maybellene’, ‘You Can Have Her’, ‘When You’re Ugly Like Us’ and the Arthur Alexander classic ‘You Better Move On’.
"A Taste Of Yesterday’s Wine” released in 1982 was Merle Haggard and George Jones’ first album together reaching No. 4 in the Billboard Country Album Charts. Two singles charted from the collection ‘Yesterday’s Wine’ reaching No. 1 and ‘C.C. Waterback’ getting to No. 10.
Two songs were written as tributes to the singers, ‘Silver Eagle’ for Merle and ‘No Show Jones’ for George.
Merle’s then wife Leona Williams is featured on backing vocals.
