Look Inside The Asylum Choir - Asylum Choir

Look Inside The Asylum Choir
Poised between his past as a top Wrecking Crew session man (Phil Spector, The Byrd’s, Sonny And Cher) and assistant to Liberty A&R head Snuff Garret, and his future as a 1970s rock superstar, Leon Russell teamed up with his Texas psych buddy Marc Benno to work with Gene Clark, Harpers Bizarre and Gary Lewis in their new studio, eventually making this unusual and breathtaking album. Intended as a state-of-the- art, quasi-psychedelic statement: from the lead-off 'Welcome To Hollywood' to the bizarre 'suite' 'Episode Containing 3 Songs', 'N/Y. Op.', 'Land of Dog', 'Mr. Henri The Clown', the album attracted rave reviews from all the hip critics, but sadly proved a commercial non-entity. Possibly having a 'offensive' cover didn't help...so we include for your delectation a choice of that, the replacement, and the rather groovy UK cover: can't be bad! Russell, post-Mad Dogs And Englishmen a bona fide superstar, purchased the band's unreleased second album and released it on his own Shelter Records, to rather better sales. Here once more is this amazing lost gem, intensified in Rev Ola style, and ready to work it's magic! A great-lost psychedelic nugget by one of the major rock superstars! Wonderfully re-mastered in the most painstaking RevOla way and with the usual amazing RevOla packaging with very special notes!

Foolish Seasons
Dana Gillespie was a music lover from an early age: "I discovered the blues when I went to the American Folk Blues Festival in 1962 and also to see the Yardbirds at the Marquee Club. I was in my early teens and hadn't heard anything like it before." In 1964 she recorded her first single for Pye, with Donovan on guitar and became a regular on the folk circuit along with friends Donovan and David Bowie. She recalls: "I was doing folk because I couldn't afford a band and I hadn't found my musical niche". In those early years Dana got to know many of the top bands and people in the music business, appearing on Ready Steady Go and other cool TV shows of the era along with the legends of the British pop explosion. In 1967, she made this album, Foolish Seasons, a Psychpop/Swinging London/Folkrock masterpiece. Featuring the rare Donovan song, "You Just Gotta Know My Mind," which should have been a smash mod hit, (and also includes the guitar of JIMMY PAGE!!!), and two fantastic Billy Nicholls covers from his much celebrated and legendary Psych/Softpop gem, 'Would You Believe.' Arranged by the great Mike Vickers and produced by Wayne Bickerton (World of Oz, Jackie Lomax, Pete Best Four, The Rubettes), this is one of THE great missing links of 1960s pop....Dana was to make one more album for Decca, morphing seamlessly into a more blues based style, before becoming a star of London's West End theatre: the first run of Jesus Christ Superstar (playing Mary Magdalene), The Who's "Tommy" (playing the Acid Queen) and the rock Othello, "Catch My Soul". She also appeared with Peter Cook, Dudley Moore and Kenneth Willams in the film "The Hound Of The Baskervilles" and starred in Ken Russell's "Mahler". A number of roles in latter-day Hammer films and more experimental arthouse movies are also fondly remembered. As a singer she moved to RCA Records and made ‘Weren’t Born A Man’ and ‘Ain’t Gonna Play No Second Fiddle’, under the aegis of David Bowie, whose management, Mainman, also took care of her career. A period in the US was spectacularly ended when Bob Dylan invited her to appear on his 1997 UK tour. Dana continues recording recording successfully today, specialising in her first love, emotionally expressive blues music. This sumptious reissue of her classic first album is LONG overdue!!

Daughters Of Albion
•FIRST EVER LEGITIMATE REISSUE ON CD
• PRODUCED BY LEON RUSSELL
• FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES!
Daughters of Albion were GREG DEMPSEY and KATHY YESSE (later Kathy Dalton), partners since their days in the folk-rock oriented Gas Company. By 1968, they hooked up with producer LEON RUSSELL and created this unbelievably ambitious psych-pop rock-opera that could’ve only come from that tumultuous moment in time. Clarinets, bells, xylophones, harps and guitars collide magically with elaborate vocal arrangements and intelligent lyrics—all within a psychedelically experimental pop context.
Included here is Daughter of Albion’s lone album, along with mono single mixes of ‘Well Wired’ and ‘Story Of Sad.’ This material has surprisingly never before been legitimately issued anywhere on CD—UNTIL NOW! Mastered by Alan Brownstein FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES!

The 16-page, full-colour booklet includes rare photos, and extensive liner notes featuring the involvement of original band members.

Green Velvet Electric: A Compendium 1983-1997

Born amidst the hype of the ‘Paisley Underground’ in LA in the early 1980s the Steppes were always the real deal, yet received less attention than lesser contemporaries such as The Rain Parade and Long Ryders. In the main a vehicle for the songs of the Irish American Fallon brothers, the Steppes earliest recordings received praise in Melody Maker who made comparisons with The Beatles and The Jam. By 1986 the band had achieved its classic line up; John and Dave Fallon were augmented by the ‘John Cippolina meets Jimmy Page’ guitar work of Tim Gilman and ‘John Densmore vibed’ drumming of Jim Bailey.

In 1986 this truly psychedelic quartet unleashed the timeless ‘drop of The Creature’ an album described by The Times in 1997 as "one of the greatest debuts ever”. An innovative mixture of trippy, fluid, west-coast acid rock, folky-Celtic romanticism and sharply observant pop-psychedelia, ‘Drop’ set a template that the band improved upon right up until their untimely demise in the midst of the acid house explosion - when playing a guitar was momentarily deemed unhip by the fickle masters of cool. The Steppes sound is as catchy as it is hallucinogenic and between 1983 and 1997 they recorded an astonishing body of work including the albums ‘drop of The Creature’ ‘Stewdio’ ‘Enquire Within’ ‘Harps and Hammers’ and ‘Gods Men and Ghosts’.

The best of this catalogue can be found on this two disc set. Both ahead of their time and outside of it The Steppes legacy is now in focus revealing just what an important band they really were.

  • NME "A lost talent that should be discovered as soon as possible”
  • The Times "Unsung Britpop forebears stifled in their day by Acid House and Transatlantic Air Fares”
  • Shindig "This is a band that should have achieved so much more and been massive. A very needed anthology”
  • Q Magazine "A Strange but rather fascinating brew”
