Would Be Goods : The Camera Loves Me (Digipack)
The Camera Loves Me (Digipack)
In the wake of the forthcoming reactivation of el records (an event that should herald national rejoicing), the original classic catalogue is to be repackaged, remastered and converted to the attractive CD digi pack format with the would be goods masterpiece 'The Camera Loves Me' is the first in the series. Would Be Goods comprised the gifted lyricist Jessica Griffin and her sister Miranda and 'The Camera Loves Me' is the defining el records production; thoroughly enigmatic, incredibly original and extraordinarily funny. 'The Camera Loves Me' is popular music as both art and artifact- a work of great individuality that in terms of concept and ambition is three decades ahead of it's time. In it's own way, this outstanding record is as stylish and as quintessentially English a piece of modern surrealism as Patrick McGoohan's 'Prisoner' or 'The Avengers' of Steed & Mrs Peel. In 1987, this album was more influential than any from western independent pop culture in encouraging the then formative j-pop and inspiring Japan's biggest contemporary underground pop star Keigo Oyamada (Cornelius) to 'invent' Kahimi Karie who would go on to enjoy enormous domestic success (with this particular style of international whimsicality and refined lightness adapted from el). In Britain, 'The Camera Loves Me' easily defied classification and was a critical success. Now almost two decades later the album regarded by observers as one of the important creative landmarks of the eighties. The new digipack has been re-mastered to include the original Monochrome Set produced album augmented by the first scarce King Of Luxembourg / Richard Preston produced single 'Fruit Paradise' / 'Hanging Gardens Of Reigate'

A Summer Song
Chad & Jeremy were a London coffee house folk duo who stylishly rode the early-mid sixties British invasion wave that swept America in the wake of the Beatles (what the Americans liked to call ‘the Oxford sound’). Educated at the Sorbonne and Eton respectively, Chad Stuart and Jeremy Clyde came from an upper middle class background (Jeremy Clyde is the great-great-great-grandson of the duke of Wellington who defeated Napoleon at Waterloo) and teenage American hearts were no match for their clean presentation, poetic good looks and beautiful manners. Initially, the duo’s music was a nicely understated period blend ofMerseybeat, folk and jazz. the first album ‘Yesterday’s Gone’ (released by ember records in Britain and by world artists in America) was given a distinctive, spacious production by John Barry and Shel Talmy and still sounds full of possibility. Chad & Jeremy’s spirited and sensitive harmonies compare favourably with the great early work of the hollies and the zombies and are a major feature of an outstanding debut. The album included ‘Yesterday’s Gone’, the first of eleven American hit singles, and their top ten stateside smash ‘A Summer Song’. The rise would continue through 1965 with their second LP ‘Sing For You.’ Now having decamped to Hollywood, Chad & Jeremy were frequent guests on such popular TV programmes as Hullabaloo, The Andy Williams Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show, and The Patty Duke Show and even featured (as themselves) in episodes of Batman. Signing to Columbia the duo proceeded to cut four accomplished pop albums for their new label before taking a leap into psychedelic waters to create through 67-8 the absurdly underrated ‘Of Cabbages & Kings’ and ‘The Ark’; brilliantly realised concept albums that in many ways parallel The Monkees’ Head. Chad & Jeremy then created a striking soundtrack for the Christopher Jones film ‘Three At The Attic’ but Columbia had lost interest and following the commercial failure of their best creative work the duo decided to call it a day. Chad Stuart went on to work with Bruce Johnston and into musical comedies, jingles, radio, teaching and writing while Jeremy Clyde established himself as an actor both onstage (with Diana Rigg and John Paul Jones) and on British television (Bergerac, Tales Of The Unexpected, Just William and Raffles). Chad & Jeremy reformed briefly in the mid-eighties and again in 2004 then they made available a private collection of acoustic recordings and performed shows as a prelude to their forthcoming ‘Then And Now’ album ‘A Summer Song¹ comprises selections from both of the first two albums, the significant non-album hits ‘If I Loved You’ and ‘It Was A Very Good Year.’ A superior rarity in ‘Your Mother’s Out Of Town’ and two rousing live cuts from a Mayfair theatre show late in 1963. Small Time / Hey Hey We’re The Manqués 2CD

Formed in the mid ‘80s, The Servants was a vehicle for songwriter David Westlake. The band was included on the NME's C86 compilation, and by 1987 future Auteur Luke Haines had joined on guitar. Their debut album, "Disinterest”, was released in 1989, and they began to work on a follow-up, "Small Time”, before disbanding in the early 1990s.
Previously unreleased, and unheard by anyone outside of the band, ‘Small Time’ is the Servants' lost second album – "the best album… a strange and wonderful thing,” according to Haines in his sleeve-notes. In his book ‘Bad Vibes’, Haines describes the band’s first album, "Disinterest”, as 'existential art rock , ten years too late and fifteen years too early’. The songs on ‘Small Time’, he says are 'more mysterious, strange and beautiful, transcending their influence and sounding like nothing else.'
CD TWO of this set – "Hey Hey We’re The Manqués” – includes rehearsal versions of songs from "Disinterest”, taped before the album was recorded. "Disinterest” was recently included in MOJO magazine's list of 'the greatest British indie records of all time.'
Compiled and mastered by David Westlake, with sleeve-notes by Luke Haines, this set has been produced with the full involvement and approval of the artists and is a must-hear for anybody with an interest in adventurous, ethereal alternative pop.

Working Nights 2CD
Working Week were formed within the vanguard of London’s jazz-dance scene of the early 1980s.
The collective revolved around Simon Booth and esteemed jazz musician Larry Stabbins (both previously with Rough Trade act Weekend), and singer Julie Roberts.
Their debut single ‘Venceremos (We Will Win)’ boasted Tracey Thorn and Robert Wyatt on vocals and reached the Top 75. Julie Tippetts (nee Driscoll) sang on the brooding follow-up ‘Storm Of Light’.
Debut album WORKING NIGHTS was one of the cult favourites of 1985, peaking at No. 23 on the charts and spawning several more singles.
WORKING NIGHTS has long been out-of-print and impossible to find on CD. This deluxe reissue finally introduces many of their non-album tracks and remixes to the digital format, including the bonus 12” ‘Stella Marina’ with a rap from Jalal of The Last Poets.
Also includes two previously unissued live tracks.
