Big City Dilemma - Jeremy Reed & The Ginger Light

Big City Dilemma
· The Ginger Light is the musical collaboration between the acclaimed poet and author Jeremy Reed and the musician and producer Itchy Ear. Together they create a performance dynamic unparalleled in British Poetry and an excitement usually only generated by pop. The Ginger Light fuses spoken word, music, sound design and song.
· This is Jeremy Reed’s debut CD release. He has had 50 major literary works published over the past 25 years; more than two dozen books of poetry, 12 novels and volumes of music and literary criticism including tomes on Marc Almond (with whom he is a frequent collaborator), Billie Holiday and Elvis Presley and translations of Cocteau, Montale and Adonis among many others. He has won many prestigious literary prizes like the Somerset Maugham Award and was patronised by the legendary artist Francis Bacon.

§ "The most beautiful, outrageously brilliant poetry in the world” – Bjork

§ "Jeremy Reed is a legend. What more can you fucking ask?’ – Pete Doherty

§ "Jeremy Reed’s talent is almost extraterrestrial in its brilliance. He is Rimbaud reconfigured as the ‘Man Who Fell To Earth’, a visitor from deep space whose time machine was designed by Lautreamount and De Sade and powered by the most exotic fuels the imagination has ever devised”. – J.G. Ballard

§ "Jeremy Reed is the real definition of British poetry now and deserves to be worshipped himself”. – Richard Hell

§ "When Patti Smith meets Rimbaud at Graceland, the result is Jeremy Reed’s Heartbreak Hotel”. – Edmund White

§ "Reed’s poetry is full of rich and careful writing, dense with pleasure in words that pleasure the world and waken us to its lovely surprises”. – Seamus Heaney

§ "British poetry’s glam, spangly, shape-shifting answer to David Bowie” – The Independent

§ "One of the most original virtuoso voices to be heard in the poetry of our time”. – Lawrence Ferlinghetti

§ "The man is light years away from his contemporaries in poetry”. – Andrew Loog Oldham

Pineal
•    Avant-pop songwriter, post-minimalist composer and award winning pianist Othon’s ambitious new album Pineal combines his classical background (Trinity Music College, The John Halford prize) with his love for fierce dance music and the ancient wisdom embodied in the sacred Ikaros (healing songs) of Brazilian tribes.

•    He collaborates with diverse talents; Marc Almond, the futuristic electro-cabaret multi-octave opera singer Ernesto Tomasini, Bird Radio (recipient of an 2014 Aldeburgh Festival Grant) and the indigenous Amazonian shamans Javier Arevalo Shahuano and Jessica Ramirez Seopa.

•    The album’s title points to the brain’s pineal gland, traditionally responsible for mystical awakenings and inner visions. Ayahuasca, the powerful Amazonian medicinal brew, is a pineal gland activator that Othon believes enables him to access hidden parts of his psyche. His participation in mind-expanding Ayahuasca ceremonies in the midst of the rain forest accom-panied by the hypnotic shamanic singing, inspired Othon to create ‘Pineal’. It’s an album that, in the eclectic tradition of genre-inclusive ‘PAN-muzik’ veers from cinematic pop, fierce shamanic techno, downtempo jungle and violin driven electronica.

•    Othon has uniquely transformed ancient shamanic ceremony into the evocative and hypnotic soundscapes that feature in the album’s second part. The shamans’ blessing was granted by chiefs of the Kaxinawá tribe to turn one of their sacred songs ‘Pasha Dume’ into a hard-edged choral techno track and, likewise, a traditional Umbandan (Afro-Brazilian religion) sung accompaniment to sacred ceremonies, ‘Cobra Coral’ is reworked into tribal dance track on which Marc Almond sings in the original Brazilian.

•    Other genre-breaking highlights of the album include ‘Japan Suite’ – a heartbreaking mini requiem about the Fukushima nuclear tragedy and ‘Dawn Yet To Come’ described by Othon as ‘melancholic techno with pre-Classical counterpoint, topped by the ecstatic singing of a gospel choir.

Pineal; the most dramatic and wild musical imaginings.
Pineal; genre-defying mash-ups and stylistic smashings through.
Pineal; accomplished soundscapes with percussive and shamanic force.
Pineal; less an album, more a sensibility.

Ten Plagues (CD/DVD)
•    ‘Ten Plagues’ is an award winning one-man song cycle written especially for Marc Almond by celebrated playwright Mark Ravenhill (‘Shopping And F**king’, ‘Mother Clap’s Molly House’ and ‘The Cut’) with the accomplished musical dramatist Conor Mitchell.

•    ‘Ten Plagues’ is presented here in a special 2-disc package including an all new studio recording of the complete work as well as a DVD of the live stage show filmed at the historic Wilton’s Music Hall in East London.

•    ‘Ten Plagues’ tells the intense story of one man’s survival through the great plague of London in 1665 whilst drawing poetic parallels to more modern epidemics.

•    Marc Almond plays a character wracked by the loss of friends, lovers, family and sanity in a city in the midst of crisis and disease. He tries to hold on to his humanity despite mourning, grief, despair and the physical isolation that the plague necessitates.

•    ‘Ten Plagues’ in turn conjures up our reactions to more contemporary pandemics: for example, the fear, hysteria and prejudice about the first victims of AIDS, at the outset referred to as a ‘gay plague’; those who suffered were afraid, isolated and made to feel outcasts of society.

•    The piece was performed at the Traverse Theatre at The Edinburgh International Fringe Festival in 2011 and received the prestigious ‘Fringe First Award’.

•    Marc Almond stated in 2014; "if I could perform a piece such as Ten Plagues, I could do anything. Nothing would daunt me again." And so it proved, for ‘Ten Plagues’ was indeed another important turning point in Marc Almond’s diverse and acclaimed career. It gave him the confidence and credibility to tackle all new dramatic stage roles such as the part of Seneca in ‘Poppea’ (a reworking of the Coronation of Poppea by Monteverdi) performed in 2012 at Le Châtelet Opera House in Paris and, in 2014, to act in a collaboration with the award winning composer John Harle called ‘The Tyburn Tree’.
